I don't know if I have But at least two people here have told me to look into. So I am.

I have CNS issues often. I should mention them I guess: I will get shaky only a few days a month which I notice occurs when my spinal cord in my neck feels irritated and swollen. My spine feels like a bunch of pins are being poked into it. I get headaches often sometimes it is constant for days. My brain feels like it is surrounded by a burning liquid. The back of my head in line with the top of my ears and in where the brain stem would be often burns or has vibrating feelings. Also the back of my head feels sometimes like someone is beating it with a baseball bat.

So, my questions:

Does babs bug your cns and brain like this?

If so, What are the meds that would cross into the cns and brain to kill it?

Hi seeingstars.  Some of the symptoms of all infections can overlap, so it can be hard to tell which symptoms are from which infection.

Some hallmark symptoms of Babesiosis are shortness of breath, night sweats, heart palpitations, severe headaches, and muscle weakness.  Do you have any of these symptoms?

Babesiosis is similiar to malaria and needs to be treated with a combination of an anti-malarial (often Mepron) with a certain antibiotic (Zithromax, Biaxin, or Ketek).

Hi there seeingstars!

Here is a link which lists many symptoms of Babesiosis from various sources. This is the one I mentioned where I came across issues such as depression, anxiety, and emotional lability (? sp).

Good luck!

Thank you Carrie.

Very educational.

One thing that concerns me is at the bottom of the list it said under not characteristic of babs :

_periodicity of signs and symptoms (unlike malaria or Lyme where symptoms emerge for a few days, then go away, then emerge again, etc)

Because I get flares about every 5-7 days. Flares being that I actually feel the bugs start to move and spread out in my head. This mostly stopped soon after I was taking biaxin and doxy and stayed away up until recently. I am starting to feel the bugs moving around and spreading. SO FRUSTRATING. So my doc has added Bactrim on top of my biaxin, mino, and plaq. Hope this puts a stop to it but I still don't know if this is babs or bart.

Personally, at this point I think I've been BLESSED with both.

As ticker said. Night sweats are hallmark with babesia. Bart and lyme can have night sweats too but they are slightly more pronounced with babesia. They can become severe on the 3rd or 4th day of babesia treatment. Meds such as bactrim, biaxin, doxy or plaquenil are mildly anti-babesia so they can calm many of the babs symptoms but the babesia is almost always still there. This can sometimes fool the patient or doctor.

Some other symptoms to accompany babesia are depression, lack of appetite, sometimes liver pain, losing your breath just going up a short flight of stairs, skin itching on the back of neck etc.

But i'm sure you know. Lyme and bartonella can cause some of these symptoms also, that was my reason for the "treat them all  regardless approach". And i'm still not 100% convinced that mepron/zithromax or malarone/zithromax is the answer. Very little research has been done on babesia so we don't know everything. And just because it is similar to malaria, does not mean it will behave exactly like it or respond to treatment exactly the same.

If you really want an answer. I'd say to do the clongen 15 species pcr for babesia. Igenex only covers 2-3 species so don't waste your $.

Here is a list of meds that have an effect on malaria type infections. Listed in order from least effective to possibly the most effective. Most of them have a mild effect and only a few have a strong effect. And i'm sure there are many more out there that could work also. Plus, each specie of babesia is probably more susceptible to one combo versus the other.

Biaxin, zithromax, doxycycline, bactrim, roxithromycin, plaquenil(hydroxychloroquine), alinia(nitazoxanide), chloroquine, quinine, artmensisin, artesunate, clindamycin, riamet(co-artem), malarone, mepron, lariam(not recommended due to possibly severe side effects),Lumefantrine, primaquine, tafenoquine, halofantrine etc.

Hi All,
Physinvent, and anyone else with Liver pain, how would you describe the liver pain, location, type etc.  Also, I hadn't heard of the "itching back of neck" with Babesia.  I have had that for a while and didn't associate it with LD or any of the co-infections.  How many of you with Babesia have the itching back of neck as a symptom?
Thanks, KO

Thanks minerals-I am going to NY on Wed. I am actually only taking Enula right now. I was also treating Bart but am off Rifampin too. I think the co-infections are causing most of my problems now. I don't think I was taking enough to get rid of the Babs. I am currently on Rocephin-Plaquenil-Zithro and Enula. Will let you know what they decide..Take care
