Nutrition and Supplements

Probiotic supplement (containing Lactobacillus acidophilus), 5 - 10 billion CFUs (colony forming units) a day. Probiotics, or “friendly” bacteria, help maintain gastrointestinal health and can help offset some of the side effects of taking antibiotics, such as diarrhea and yeast infections.

Beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber, may also be helpful in reducing inflammation..

Herbs

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, can trigger side effects and can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care, under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner.

You may use herbs as dried extracts (capsules, powders, teas), glycerites (glycerine extracts), or tinctures (alcohol extracts). Unless otherwise indicated, you should make teas with 1 tsp. herb per cup of hot water. Steep covered 5 - 10 minutes for leaf or flowers, and 10 - 20 minutes for roots. Drink 2 - 4 cups per day. You may use tinctures alone or in combination as noted.

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) standardized extract, 250 - 500 mg daily, for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and heart health effects. Use caffeine-free products. You may also prepare teas from the leaf of this herb.
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) standardized extract, 40 - 80 mg three times daily, for antioxidant and heart health support. Ginko can increase the effects of certain blood-thinning medications; talk to your doctor if you take blood-thiining drugs such as warfarin (Coumadin)..
Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) standardized extract, 20 mg three times a day, for inflammation and antibacterial or antifungal activity.
Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum), 150 - 300 mg two to three times daily, for inflammation and for immunity. You may also take a tincture of this mushroom extract, 30 - 60 drops two to three times a day.
Olive leaf (Olea europaea) standardized extract, 250 - 500 mg one to three times daily, for antibacterial or antifungal activity and immunity. You may also prepare teas from the leaf of this herb.
Garlic (Allium sativum), standardized extract, 400 mg two to three times daily, for antibacterial or antifungal and immune activity.
Homeopathy

Few studies have examined the effectiveness of specific homeopathic remedies. Professional homeopaths, however, may recommend treatments for Lyme disease based on their knowledge and clinical experience. Before prescribing a remedy, homeopaths take into account a person’s constitutional type -- your physical, emotional, and intellectual makeup. In some cases, such as Lyme disease, a professional homeopath may prescribe specific remedies without considering the individual's constitutional state. Such remedies for Lyme disease include:

Arsenicum album
Borrelia burgdorferi nosode
Carcinosin
Lac canimum
Ledum
Mercurius
Syphilinum
Thuja

7: Feed Your Fighting Force!
If you’re already sick, there’s no need to take it lying down. Being proactive will shorten your downtime considerably and make it less likely that you will pass your illness on to your family, friends or co-workers.

Action Tip:
Feed your body’s fighting force with any of the following herbs alone or in combination. They are taken different ways – in your food, as a tea, as capsules, or all of the above.
Astragalus Root: increases activity of killer T-cells (the body’s first line of defense), macrophages and phagocytes
Cayenne Pepper: reduces fevers and stimulates blood circulation
Echinacea: stimulates the immune response by increasing T-lymphocytes, macrophages, and interferon activity
Garlic: is anti-microbial and anti-fungal
Lomatium and Larch (Larix): destroy viruses by interfering with certain processes necessary for viral replication and directly stimulate phagocytosis (literally, eating of (bad) cells)
Olive Leaf Extract: supports the immune system and promotes beneficial microflora. Olive leaf also contains bioflavonoids which increase its natural anti-viral activity.
Oregano Oil: is a powerful antibacterial agent effective in killing many types of bacteria that cause upper respiratory and intestinal infections.
Licorice*: is very effective in killing viruses, including Herpes and Epstein-Barr viruses – it prevents the formation of certain viral proteins, and helps kill them in the cells where they replicate. Licorice tea can be a delicious part of your antiviral program. * Caution – in sensitive people licorice can increase blood pressure.
Maitake and medicinal mushrooms: increases natural killers cell’s action to actively destroy infectious agents and also cells infected with viruses and intracellular bacteria. They also play a very important role in detecting and destroying cancer cells.
Botanical medicines can be safely combined with other immune enhancing substances for quicker recovery.
8: Maintain Your System
Plant sterols and sterolins can play a very important action in immune modulation. They enhance your immune system’s ability to respond flexibly and adequately to acute challenges. Due to this immune balancing effect phytosterols have some marvelous side effects. They may reduce symptoms of joint pain and stiffness, have been shown to increase T- cell proliferation by an average of 58%, support healthy prostate function, and assist in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.
The thymus gland, located right behind the breast bone, plays a very important role in the maturation and programming of T lymphocytes. T cells play a very important role in recognizing and signaling the attack when infectious agents are present, but also in ensuring that your immune system does not attack your body – something that happens in auto-immune diseases.

Action Tip:
Maintain your immune system by increasing your intake of phytosterols - eat more plant based foods. They may also be taken as supplements. Ginseng** and Astragalus are plants you can use longer term for enhanced immunity.
Thymus derived proteins are clinically very helpful in supporting the immune system during acute challenges and in ensuring that a competent cell mediated immune reaction is mounted. ProBoost contains thymic fractions that enhance immune reactions to all infectious agents.
**Even though ginseng is generally a very safe all over hormonal and body tonic, it may increase blood pressure in rare cases.

9: Boost by Breathing
Breathing not only keeps you alive, but is a wonderful nervous system regulating tool. Breathing is also unique in that it is an automatic body function we have almost complete control over. Certain breathing patterns have been associated with significant increases in immunity.

Action Tip: To increase oxygen to your body and brain and get rid of metabolic wastes: Place your left hand on your stomach, with the center of your palm over your belly button. Place your right thumb on the pulse of your left wrist, and note your pulse rate, rhythm, and amplitude. In your mind’s eye, locate three parts of the torso: belly, lower lungs, and upper lungs. Breathe into the belly, gently filling it, then move the breath into filling the lower lungs, then all the way up under the collarbones into the upper lungs. Exhale slowly with one long breath. Try to have your exhalation time twice as long as inhalation time. Repeat 6 times, and then breathe regularly. Be conscious of pulse rate, rhythm, and amplitude and notice the difference. What a great in-and-out-of-office stress buster this is, and no one will know when you are doing it.
Avoid chronic disease, just breathe!!

10: Heal with Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicine is one of the most effective and safe ways to focus your immune surveillance on the specific challenges winter brings. Homeopathic medicine has been in use for over 200 years, and is well tried and trusted, having proved itself in many influenza and other infectious disease epidemics. These potent medicines are very affordable, and can be considered a “natural” flu shot. This non-chemical medicine can be administered either by mouth or through an injection to both prevent and fight the flu.

Action Tip:
Try general homeopathic immune boosting and flu preventive medicines like Ferrum phosphoricum, Engystol and GrippHeel in combination, Influenzinum, Oscillococcinum, or Dolicoccil as an effective safe flu preventative measure and treatment that leaves no chemical residue in the body.
Hope you are also looking forward to the transition of the season with immune readiness.

Hi KeepHope (great name),

I have been on a homeopathic and herbal protocol for two weeks. After 5 days I felt so much better. Much of the therapy involves frequency matching. I have had absolutely no herxing and my quality of life is the best since before I got sick. Each day I am feeling stronger and more pain free. Before I started this I was crippled with pain, complete loss of appetite and severe dehydration.

Yes, alternative treatments can work while they balance and restore the immune system so that your own body can fight the microbes.

For your list I would add Olive Leaf Extract and Oil of Oregano. Both are tinctures and I have had good luck with both. Easy to tolerate. Both are anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Cant go wrong with all that. D

Hi KeepHope!

you will definitely be the research and list master!! That`s great!!

I do use organic grown supplements, but I have to give you the latin names, because I just checked out that different botanic dictionaries give me different names... might not be so funny then. But you can google for more details and check if it may serve you too.

Ok, here I go:
Bacopa monnieri - I use it in salads, on vegaetables, as often as I can; it increases the metabolism in the brain, helps protein synthesis there; I had the feeling to really feel some diffence in my memory skills as well as learning skills ( I had some time when they were really bad); I felt much more balanced, sleeping is much better (started to dream again) I had the feeling to have more strength in my brain in general; it worked very good for me, is cheap, it can be grown easyly and it tastes good too. Can also be used for asthma.
Euphrasia officinalis: I made tea and used it for eye drops after abx cremes; anti-inflammatory, works well
Ocimum tenuiflorum, known as "Tulsi" or "Tulasi" in sanskrit: it helps fight different bactereia (can be used as a herb on everything, depends on individual tastes or as tee as well) and it contains flavonoids among other things which effectiveness decrease when taken together with dairy products, so you might take care here. (Sorry I forgot that and added it later)
Boswellia serrata (incense from India not fom Africa): ayurvedic medicin says this fights everything, it seems to work for me;

lots of vitamins, detoxing as much as possible, drinking a lot of water

there is so much more but the above mentioned are my favorites!

I was told by the LLMD that Samento (TOA free cat's claw), Cumanda, Teasal Root and Andrographis are his choices for lyme treatment. Whatever you use should be rotated. You should have the disease well under control before you stop abx.

I have also tried garlic and the Chinese herbs and large amounts of vitamin C.
The very best thing I have tried for insomnia is Herbsom (Zhang). L Triptophan is my second choice. For depression I like St John's Wort but it makes you sun sensitive - don't use with doxy! SAM-e can also be used for depression.
Valerian is a muscle relaxer and calmative - good for spasms and insomnia for some.
The LLMD gave me something for yeast - ashwaganda.
Grapefruit seed extract kills everything.
Reseveratrol (Japanese Knotweed) is used for lyme.
Green tea is full of antioxidants but does not kill anything.
Sasparilla tea is supposed to be effective against lyme.
Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother is good for inflammation. I find it helpful with indigestion while on abx.
Astragalus can be used to boost your immune system if you find a tick on you, but is not recommended when you already have an infection although Zhang has it in some of his herbs.
Milk thistle helps to detox the liver.

Many symptoms of lyme are similar to magnesium and B12 deficiency so these should be supplemented as they are depleted by the spirochette.
You can buy many herbs by the pound at herbalcom.com but I don't know if they are as potent as some brand names. They are very cheap.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the great info...I'll look into some of these things instead of the silver!

There is Buhner's protocol...which includes most of the herbs Nefferdun put up. But if you want specifics, I'll post them.

Raw Vegan...is the frequency testing done with a little machine pressing into your skin (muscle testing)?

Essential oil blend of lemon, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus radiata & rosemary - kills everything.
Thyme, lemongrass & oregano essential oils kill fungus and bacteria (and probably viruses too).
Garlic (raw) kills everything.
Pumpkin seeds, black walnut hulls, & wormwood help eliminate parasites.
Tanalbit (antifungal tannins) help kill candida/yeast.
Biotin keeps fungus from changing into spores, thus improving ability to kill the fungus with other herbs.
Elderberry interferes with the reproductive cycle of viruses.
Myrrh + mastic gum combination kills h. pylori (causes 95+% of all stomach/duodenal ulcers; another spirochete).
Blueberries & Cranberries contain a substance that prevents the adherance of bacteria to mucus membranes (especially in the urinary tract).

Hi KeepHope,

I am on really strong plant enzymes prescribed by Dr. Jenefer Huntoon. The protease (protein digesting enzyme) is supposed to digest the bacteria. It seems to work since I am feeling so much better with no herxing. I also take cinnamon, Resveratrol and Oil of Oregano. I can't handle antibiotics.

Prior to seening Dr. Huntoon, I tried many other herbs. It all seemed to help some. But, the addition of the strong plant enzymes really made a difference.
I am recovering from Lymes, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome. I am interested in learning which natural remedies people are finding helpful. I became intolerant of antibiotics so I started using all sorts of herbal remedies and they helped some. Then, I started a concentrated plant and pancreatic enzyme program with Dr. Jenefer Huntoon in Seattle. This really moved me along the road to recovery so I want others to know about this enzyme approach. Dr. Huntoon might be able to consult with you by phone or possibly she could provide her protocol to your local doctor.

Re-reading the book Cure Unknown, she mentions that Grapefruit seed extract is used to kill the cyst form of lyme.  It is the only natural rememdy I remember her mentioning in the book so it must be effective.  GFSE is said to be so powerful it can be used to sterialize for surgery or to make contaminated water safe to drink. This is one I have in the cupboard and now I remember why!!

It comes in capsules (Thorne Research makes one called "Citricidin" ~ see http://www.thorne.com/media/SF746.pdf ), but the drops are stronger and I think more effective.

Sorry I made a mistake about what the LLMD gave me. Ashwagandha is for adrenal support, not yeast.
For yeast he gave me a product called Phytostan which contains grape fruit seed extract.

Hi KeepHope,

I forgot to mention that I also take a product recommended by Dr. Jenefer Huntoon to help build the immune system. It is not specifically an anti-Lymes supplement. It is called Herbal Mix made by Life Extension. There are many other green powders on the market but Dr. Huntoon believes that this one is the most comprehensive. It contains a wide range of immune building ingredients.
I have had Lymes, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue since 2006. I became intolerant of antibiotics so I started using all sorts of herbal remedies and they helped some. Concentrated plant enzymes prescribed by Dr. Jenefer Huntoon in Seattle helped me more than anything. Dr. Huntoon might be able to consult with you by phone or possibly she could provide her protocol to your local doctor.

I printed the list right ahead. I would suggest asking alfers to copy your lists to the "newbies- check this out" thread. It would be very helpful and easy to find. dorit

It's not a problem to bring up old threads, as long as you realize that the people that responded to that thread are not usually are no longer posting much if at all.

These lists need to be used very carefully though. AS is stated in the first post -
Herbs, however, can trigger side effects and can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care, under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner.

So please, no one use these herbs mentioned here without first speaking to a practitioner who is already very familiar with those herbs and their uses.

Lactoferrin is kickin some BUG ***,, I have had gut major herx with just one 300 mg tablet from life extensions (www.lef.org) it apparently is anti all the bad things, fungus, yeast, viral, parasites, bacteria, and helps with probiootcs, it somehow removes excess iron also, if you have this issue.iron supposedly feeds bad things
i am now taking 600 mg about 5-6 times a day 3-3.5 grams per day) ..I have had to every 4-5 or 6th day cut the dosage down to one tablet every 3-4 times as doing the higher doses seems to overload bowels
will do this for 45 days which from what i read is maximum cycle for parasites-virus's to be regenerating

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2000/oct2000_report_lactoferrin.html
Lactoferrin appears to be particularly important in the health and function of the intestinal tract and has been found to greatly reduce systemic and intestinal inflammation in such conditions as inflammatory bowel disease and others. Animals subjected to a variety of pathogens known to cause both systemic and intestinal inflammation and damage show much greater resistance and reduced inflammation when fed lactoferrin.

When fed to adult animals and human infants, lactoferrin showed a dramatic increase in good micro flora—such as bifidus—and a decrease in bad bacteria, such as E. coli, streptococcus, clostridium and others. The result was desirable intestinal flora, which is known to be essential for optimal health, immunity and resistance to disease. An extensive review that examined the role of lactoferrin in inflammation and the health of the intestinal tract stated, “The possibility that lactoferrin limits the autodestructive inflammatory response presents a new alternative for the future management of systemic inflammation.”(5) Some research also suggests that lactoferrin is able to stimulate intestinal cell growth and may lead to better digestive functions, in addition to its ability to enhance the growth of “good” microflora in the intestine.

Lactoferrin has been found to both directly and indirectly inhibit several viruses that cause disease in humans. It directly inhibits viruses by binding to viral receptor sites, thus preventing the virus from infecting healthy cell

Studies have found it’s the apolactoferrin form that has the most powerful effects as an anti-microbial agent. Directly related to lactoferrin’s previously mentioned ability to suppress certain health degrading bacteria in the intestine, lactoferrin is a powerful anti-microbial that inhibits a wide range of pathogenic bacteria and other microbes. The mechanism appears to lie with lactoferrin’s ability to bind iron, as it is known to have an extremely high affinity for this metal. Many pathogenic bacteria need a supply of free iron to multiply—in the presence of lactoferrin, they are strongly inhibited or killed.

You know, I read that as well, but I would like to caution you about using it for the extended amount of time - this product works by binding to iron in your intestinal tract, so this can cause iron deficiency issues. Considering a lot of us already have absorption problems in our intestines, it could mean that you are setting yourself up for problems.

Please do the research you need to, as iron deficiency has it's own issues, and we certainly don't need to add more issues to the infections we are already fighting. Please be careful.

traveler..yes thank you for that

i actually have high iron and have had it for many years. in Cutlers hair test book, he says that many heavy metals in effect cause the body to store iron, such as lead, cadmium, uranium, (I have had high levels of all of these) and a few more..My levels have been around 120 levels most of my life i think..last blood test down to 65-70, i think, which on one hand i hope means metals are down

Life extension has a very cheap cbc-wbc test for i think $39 and serum ferritin for I think $24, so will keep an eye on

I know women pre-menopausal often have low iron, so again good of you to point that out
