I was wondering if it's common to develop chemical sensitivities with Lyme.  I tested negative on allergy tests but believe I've developed sensititives.  I get severe sinus inflammation/pressure at the drop of a hat, especially when I'm around any sort of chemicals or ordors.  Will this eventually go away with treatment?

Hi scorpio!

I also cannot handle chemicals and stuff that smells any more and with some I feel like getting strangled or having to throw up. Sometimes that is not funny anymore and I really do suffer with this (and not many can really understand it)
I think Lyme does contribute to it;

another thing is that chemical ingredients of everything that smells /fragrance, deodorants etc rank on top of allergens; my dermatologist told me that about 20 to 25% of population have developed sentitivity against these stuff in the meanwhile.

Don`t know if it goes away with treatment. But I think there are a lot more of us who have these sensitivities. dorit

I also have MCS. Alot of it has to do with the fact that your body is already over-loaded and the de-tox pathways are over worked. Here they call it your total body burden. It would make sense that as you detox your body your sensitivities will be less severe. So far my MCS is still a problem. D

Yes, MCS is common with chronic Lyme. Yes, the sensitivity level can be reduced with treatment. However, harsh chemical cleaners & perfumes are not healthy anyway, so it is good to continue using safer products even after your sensitivity level decreases.

Hi Gracie`s Mom -

I am so sorry for what Gracie has gone through! Good to hear that she got better and that there is hope to get rid of some of those reactions.

Some of the natural smells are affecting me too - like garlic or when I touch the door handles which are made of brass after I creamed my hands it gives a kind of metallic smell which nearly causes my asthma - so I fully can imagine Gracie`s reaction to the silver.

Graciesmom and Dorit: Have you (or Gracie) been tested for heavy metal poisoning? The doctor I was seeing in Boston years ago said that reaction to metals is caused from overload of heavy metals in the body. Just curious..... D

Thanks Dowa; I had such a testing done, but you may be right and I should do one again; I constantly lost weight during the last years (since Lyme..?!)
it was not much, not drastic but ongoing; and as far as I know the heavy metal (and other poison) is "stored" in the fat cells and if you loose weight, it floods the body. Good advice! dorit

After getting lyme I also tested positive severe reactions to many chemicals and foods. It was ablood test the skin tests said I was fine with everything. I have the nose of a dog. I can smell things that are in my basement from my second floor--if there is an odor I can find it! In the beginning I couldn't bare the smell of even toast let alone anyone drying their clothes using fabric softner sheets.. That would send me into a tailspin. And I also cannot tolerate the smell of a metal door handle on my hands! I never heard anyone else say that Thank you I don't feel so alone!!!!
HOWEVER...............

As I have been in treatment for 2 years now, many of the sensitivities have left. I can again eat spinach and sunflower seeds and dozens of other things that I couldn't tolerate 2 years ago. I can stand the scents of some of my husbands colognes etc.

So they do go away with treatment. I hope this continues. A huge sensitivity issue I had for years after the lyme and co-infections set in was a horribly burning mouth and tongue with everything I ate and drank including water. I even had to empty the capsules of meds because the gel capsules burned so badly. I was not able to take any supplaments either. I realize now that it is neurological, my brain telling my body that everything was the enemy. Now it happens with only certain things I eat and it doesn't last long. It was to the point that my lips were peeling and I couldn't wear even organic lipstick. Now I can wear it for a few hours at a time before I have to wipe it off.

Of course I am terrified to go off antibiotics and switch to herbals when the time comes, but that is my goal. Hang in there and it will get better. If I can--- anyone can-I was practically crippled physically and mentally.Blessings

It's all so frustrating and confusing. There are days when I do not have much sinus inflammation and then there are days when I look and feel and as if I was punched in the face. Sometimes it's obvious what caused it and other times it's impossible to figure out. Odors of any kind seem to have an effect on me.

Years back when I first started to get sick I started to experience the chronic puffy eye thing. Was told by doctors that it appeared to be an allergic reaction but I tested negative for allergies. Also was told I had sinus inflammation but no active infection. Then came the extreme fatigue, constant viral type infections and yes lots of hair loss. All along I was experiencing extreme brain fog and neuro symptoms that were getting progressively worse but chalked it up to stress, fatigue and frequent fevers, although at the time I was getting plenty of rest and more than enough sleep.

Gracie's Mom, It' great that you managed to beat the sensitivities.  I am so sorry for all that Gracie and you have been through.  It seems as though she's made quite a bit of progress, although I realize quite a bit is not nearly enough.

For the past month my doctor has had me on oral antibiotics and various supplements.  Next week I start IV Rocephin.  At what point do you think it might be a good idea to try the Zhang protocol?

I have started to notice a slight improvement with fatigue and pain and thank goodness this week I am not having severe mood swings, anxiety or depression.  Yeah!!  With any luck that was all due to a herx and I will never have to deal with those isues again.  Don't I wish! LOL

2001 symptoms started:
Tingling in fingers and toes both sides, not tested at that time for LD
2007 Summer tested pos. WB, diagnosed with LD, tested neg for co-infections thru Igenex
Abx - Doxy 100mg 2x/day for 3 weeks (before diagnosis)
Amoxicillin 1gm 2x/day for 1 month
Amoxicillin 1gm 3x/day with Probenecid 500mg 2x/day  5 months
Currently on Dr. Zhang's protocol

Very strange, but I too have many chemical sensitivities! I notice my vision gets very distorted and my body starts to ache when I am in contact with a chemical or product that I am sensitive to. Thanks for the help scorpio!

I'm sorry you also suffer with chemical sensitivities. For years I, and my many doctors, concentrated on the most painful and debilitating symptoms but now realize that many of the annoying symptoms that made no sense were also connected to Lyme.
