I know that it is very common with LD and other infections to be deficient in essential fatty acids. I know I am by the look of my skin and hair. I cannot however seem to absorb the EFAs as they seem to go straight through me. What do you all take for supplements for essentail fatty acids?  I have tried oils and capsules. Thanks  D

Dowa,

Have you tried putting the oil (probably better with borage or other vegetable oils rather than fish oil, LOL!!!) on your skin for absorption that way?

Also, have you tried taking a digestive enzyme mix that contains lipase? Lipase is the enzyme needed for digestion of fats.

And have you tried enteric-coated EFA's? I saw something somewhere that suggested that EFA's that are applied directly into the small intestine get better absorption or something like that....might be in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, though, so I'm not sure about this for other conditions...

I hope this helps - take care,

I do not take capsules any more, it seems as I could not tolerate them, don`t know why but I assume that I am allergic to some stuff which is usually in them.
So I decided to get the EFAs only with my food: therefore I take walnut oil - at least three big spoons a day. I eat a lot shellfish, broccoli, linseed, pumpkin seeds and use sunflower seed oil for my skin. I also did a lot of thermotherapy lately and liver detoxing - and got the feeling that absorption of supplements got much much better till then; I would say that I can even see it with my skin. Don`t know if this is of any help to you. Greetings, dorit.

Thanks Razzle. I use coconut on my skin, better to smell like a coconut than a fish!! (: I was thinking about the enzymes, I used to take pancreatic enzymes, maybe need to do it again. How much do you think is actually absorbed through the skin? It seems like you would need to use an awful lot.   D

I eat ground flax for breakfast and it is full of Omega 3 - delicious too. You can eat salmon which is very high in it and walnuts are also good. Sunflower seeds are the highest source of omega 6 which is higly inflammatory and should be avoided.
Almost forgot chia seeds are very high in omega 3's - and they boost your energy.

I just opened a new package of ground flax this morning. 2 TB provide 2400 mg of omega 3. My fish oil capsules only provide 300 mg of omega 3. I eat about 1/3 cup flax with almonds in the morning. It is also full of lignans, a powerful antioxidant - 2 TB has more than 30 cups of broccoli. And it helps reduce bad cholesterol.
