I've been having problems with my PICC and getting fed up.  I'm on my second PICC in less than two months and always seem to have discomfort, sometimes more bearable than others.  Either I feel pinching, sticking, soreness or sensitivitiy.  The nurse and doctor both think the PICC looks fine although the skin is very irritated.  Going to try two dressing changes a week instead of one and a different type of dressing.  If this doesn't work out, would a Port be the answer or would this irritate me just as much?  I'm going to need at least 6 months of IV antibiotics and am only into the second month.

Have you tried a BioPatch at the site (a small disc that goes around the hole where the PICC line comes out of your skin)? I was having a lot of irritation around my PICC and use of a BioPatch has stopped the irritation. Also, it could be you have a sensitivity to the betadine or whatever they use to clean around your site. Do you use the skin prep protectant stuff? If so, discontinue it and see if that helps. And what type of clear covering are they using - tegaderm or something else? Some people are sensitive to the dressing material itself.

You might want to have a discussion with your PICC nurse about different supplies and ideas first before you change access types (i.e., PICC to Port).

Good luck,

Thanks Razzle. I spoke to the nurse today and she is scheduled to come here on Thursday with something new. Actually, I think she did say she was going to bring a BioPatch but as usual I can't remember exactly what she said. Oh well! lol If not, I'll mention it to her and also ask her to discontinue using the skin prep and betadine. I believe the clear covering she uses is tegaderm. Whatever new dressing she plans on using will need to be changed twice a week instead of once a week.

I went back to the hospital this morning where the PICC was inserted and even though they changed the dressing and did not use betadine I'm still experiencing discomfort. I'm not sure if they used a BioPatch or not so that might just be the answer. I hope so.

I'm glad the BioPatch worked for you.
