I am having a little trouble with my B-12 shots. I take 3cc's every week and lately I have been noticing a pocket forming under my skin that is very painful and causes a bruise. While on the phone with the pharmacist, he asked me why I was taking so much B-12. I told him I had Lyme Disease....yada, yada. He said he had never heard of giving so much in one dose and that that dose is usually only given ONCE a month. Huh??? He also told me that the reason I have those pockets under my skin is because the B-12 dose is too much in one area and that it doesn't have anywhere to go, so it goes under the skin. He told me to be careful because it could cause an abcess! I don't want that! He told me to call my doctor but my best bet was to do 2 shots, 1 1/2 in each leg or wherever I prefer as long as it's in a big muscle.

So, my question is.....am I injecting too much? What are your doses and how often do you inject? Once a week? Once a month?

Thanks everyone!

Hi CajunGrl.  I am sorry you are dealing with this.

Some people who have Lyme have low B-12 levels.  I don't think it is the pharmacist's place to debate what your doctor has prescribed.  Some people take higher levels and some people inject the shots daily.  Dr. Burrascano discusses injecting 1 cc B-12 daily for 3-6 months on page 29 of his guidelines at http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

I recommend calling the doctor who prescribed the shots.  Do you give yourself the shot in the same place every day?

CJ: I would agree with your pharmacist. I have been taking B12 for over 20 years and only do 1cc at a time and only once per week. As far as the bump/bruise, try putting it in slower, that should help.   D

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I think I will do 1 1/2 in each leg so I don't get that pocket anymore.

Ticker: Thanks for posting that link. Wow, it is full of information. Things I am already doing and some I am not. I'm proud to say that most of the supplements he listed, I was already taking. That makes me feel good.

I went pick up a smaller gauge. I got a 25 gauge which is much smaller and the needle is only 1 inch long. That will probably feel alot better.

Hi CajunGrl.  What size needle were you using?  I use a 3/10 cc insulin needle which is very fine and small.

For some reason, I thought you had the ILADS link.  It is packed with information.  Many Lyme doctors follow Dr. B's guidelines.

I was using a 21 gauge needle. I think the length was 2 1/2. It was huge!

Yes, you gave me the Ilads link yesterday. I haven't been able to read it all yet. alot of good information though.

Cajun, I am not as ill as you, but will try to contribute info. I believe everyone is different and everyone metabolizes differently. I take a vitamin/mineral complex daily, in addition to a B complex, orally. Endocrinologist lab showed slightly low B12. Less than one month later, PCP lab test highlights B12 as too high. I don't know what this could mean.

And question: If one started taking b12 supplements, why would a shot be necessary, unless levels were immediate dangerously low?

Lyme,

If I'm understanding you correctly, you are already taking B-12 supplements right? Are you taking the B-12 Lingual? I've read that B-12 by mouth does not absorbed as good as the injections. You would have to talk to your doctor about if you really need B-12. Most Lyme patients do because Lyme deplinishes B-12.

Also, read that link that Ticker posted above. It has alot of good information. Read page 29 about B-12.

I am taking a regular Walmart B complex, along w/ daily vites w/ minerals (and 2 other handfulls of vites). My question arises because my endo test shows low B12 -- my pcp noted it-- it is highlighted, so I can't read the numbers. But my pcp test came back highlighted w/ B12 TOO high. Is this possible? does it mean anything? Can your B12 be too high?

Great lessons in B12 you've started here, CG!

I was prescribed B12 shots. After the first 3 or 4 I just couldn't stab myself anymore.... I couldn't do it.

Lyme,

I'm not sure why those tests came out so different like that. Very weird. You would have to ask your doctor why that happened and what tests were run.

Jelaine,

It is a mental thing for sure. It really freaks me out when I see that needle in me, LOL. I don't blame you for not wanting to do it.
