Hi all, I'm treating with Dr. J in SC.  I did two cycles of Minocin+Zithromax+Omnicef with two days of Flagyl at the end of each.  I didn't herx as far as I know although I did have one nasty little rash pop up and experience some increased joint pain and lots of fatigue so maybe I did.  I saw Dr. J two weeks ago and he changed my ABX protocol to Minocin 100mg BID, Omnicef 600mg BID (doubling dose from before), Rifobutin 150mg BID all on MWF for three weeks, adding Flagyl 500mg BID on W, Th, and F of the third week and then taking a break for a week. I'm on the first Th. of that program. I'm experiencing some increased joint pain but, surprisingly, my energy has been very good and my perpetually sore throat has improved some. As the subject of my post suggests, I'm also experiencing quite a bit of diarrhea. I'm taking probiotics several times/day which helped me get through the first two cycles of ABX with no problems with diarrhea but either the 1200mg of Omni or the Rifobutin is apparently loosening things up quite a bit.  Is there anything that I can do other than take more probiotics?

Thanks,

jasrich

You need to be careful and if this continues, be checked for C-Diff.

Sometimes your body adjusts to meds after a week or so, and sometimes never.

I am one that cannot take Azith...no matter how hard we try!

Not to be gross, but if you get a strong fishy odor when you go...please be sure to get checked for C-Diff!!

Thanks for responding. It's only been a few days so I didn't want to panic or even call Dr. J's office because all he's going to say is to take probiotics. It does smell sort of oceany but I'm also supplementing with sea salt which does that some. Come to think of it, the sea salt might be contributing to the loose bowels so maybe I need to back off on that for a few.

Agree on the fishy smell; also if it starts to smell like what I call eau de dumpster on a hot day.

I have IBD, so whenever I take abx, I also take imodium three times a day. Also be sure you're taking the probiotics at least two hours after and four hours before any dose of abx.

Good luck, and hang in there!

Sorry you're dealing with this. Imodium has worked wonders for me. I don't need it every day but when I do it works very quickly.

Gee, I'm sorry, Jasrich! I do not have this now, but did have a problem many years ago. It went on for over a month, enough to cause concern, because I was not on any abx.

Simple as it sounds, at least 1/2 container of yogurt per day (or more) took care of it within days.

I agree with the others about being watchful for C diff. and taking probiotics---the right amount at the right time.
Some food options are: the BRAT diet= bananas, rice, applesauce, toast -----also starchy things like yams, sweet potatoes, --------also, eliminate sugar from the diet because it makes diarrhea worse and really fuels the "bad germs".

Best wishes, bablymers mom

jasrich, do let your doctor know because diarreah can be serious.

If it is not from C-diff, you may want to ask him to prescribe VSL#3 double-strength.  This is a prescription refrigerated acidophilus powder that you add to water and drink.  It is much stronger than the ones you can buy, and it works very well.

Thanks to all for responding. The diarrhea seems to have resolved.  Unfortunately, so has the little blast of energy that I had for a few days last week after I started the new ABX regimen. Now I'm back to fatigued although I'm sleeping pretty well.  Most noticeably, my joints and muscles are really aching. All of my usual achy places are aching even worse than usual and, as I read on a Bartonella thread, my back aches like I pulled muscles even though I haven't.  I called and left a message for Dr. J to ask whether this was probably a herx reaction and his nurse called back to say yes but I didn't expect anything different. I'm very skeptical about this whole DX, the treatment, and Dr. J.  I'm wondering - do ABX cause significant muscle and joint pain in the absence of infection?

Thanks.

I wonder if the 'diarreah' is the bodies way of getting rid of the toxins caused by abx. killing off bacteria

I felt a lot more energetic / less depressed etc; following a bout of diarreah whilst on doxy.

Oh dear..
Well...since you brought it up..lol
Mine was so bad that I was on the tiolet for about two hours a day...and then the cramps...
And then the hemmoriods....sp?
I got so bad that I had just pools of blood coming out. It was so bad that is was like my afterbirth.
I was stuck in Europe after going to Munich thinking falsely that they had some better ideas than the US.
But I could not travel...I was in bad shape.
But when I got home, finally, I had my colonostopy...sp?
But that was not the problem. My dr. was very worried by the huge amount of abx that I was on..and said that this could seriously hurt my colon.
And they were worried that I was bleeding inside..so more fun....yippie.
But it turned out to be inner himeroids.
So...that was adressed.
