First, thanks to all for the wonderful background information.

I was diagnosed three weeks ago.  Went on doxy and was very optimistic that we had caught it three weeks from tic exposure.  Now I'm three weeks into doxy.  General aches and rash are gone, but I have mild aches and some tingling in my ankles.  I'm an avid runner/biker/swimmer and have had a life of ankle issues, so a bit confused if this is Lyme related, but it just feels different.  My internist (great on many fronts) said stick with doxy and add advil.  That helped a bit but not much.  Doxy course is now over.  Suggestions?

Many thanks.

Hi Ken,

The recommended dose of doxy for a new infection is 400-600mg. It should be taken for at least six weeks. Lyme bacteria reproduce every 4 weeks so it's important to extend the antibiotic dosage to six weeks so that the bacteria are killed off.

Thanks. That's lot more intense that the Lyme Disease Foundation seems to suggest. http://www.aldf.com/raad.shtml Is there a debate among folks about this?

Hi again Ken,

That site you are reading is an IDSA site. It is currently being investigated for it's guidelines and treatment protocols. Here is a great site to help you with dosing. Btw, I was a little off on the Doxy dosage but this site explains dosing and gives a ton of information on Lyme Disease.

Here is a paragraph I copied and pasted about dosing:

Increasingly, clinicians recommend that certain drugs used for Lyme disease be given at higher daily doses: for example, 3,000–6,000 mg of amoxicillin, 300–400 mg doxycycline, and 500–600 mg of azithromycin. Some clinicians prescribe antibiotics using blood levels to guide higher doses. Close monitoring of complete blood counts and chemistries are also required with this approach.
