I have read that magnesium will get rid of tingles, but has anyone ever heard of it causing tingles.

I started on 250 mg of Manesium 1x a day and after three days I started to get tingling in my fingers.  I'm not sure if this is causing it or if something else is the culprit.

Also, last week on Thursday I had a twitch in my chest and then my heart started to pound - I got really cold and clammy and felt like I was going to pass out.  I also felt really shakey all over - it was scarey enough that it sent me to the hospital.  They kept me overnight and did a nuclear stress test.  My test came out normal, and I'm still left with the unanswered question of what caused me to have this episode.  I don't want to blame everything on lymel...incase it is not the culprit.

I feel afraid now, because I don't want to have a heart attack.  And if lyme is affecting my heart...that really freaks me out.

Hi 3,
I can't tell you anything about the Mag, wish I knew the answer on that for me too!

I do have a question about the 'episode' you described. Have you ever been evaluated for Hypo-glycemia? The sx that you describe sound like what I can go through when I need to eat - or sometimes after eating!

I wish I had some good info to give you, but hopefully someone with a working brain that has had more experience.

Please, please try not to get too stressed over any of this - stress opens the door to your body to a lot of different things - including LD.

At this point, I have not yet had any heart issues - other than palps from time to time- but it would be scary to me as well.

Take care & try not to allow yourself to worry too much, as that doesn't help either

Hi Angela,

Can you cut the dose down a little and see what happens? I've never heard of it doing that but you never know. Some of us are so sensitive to everything, including me.

Did they happen to do an EKG while you were in the hospital? If this episode continues, you can ask your doctor to do a 24 hour heart monitor test. You would wear the heart monitor for 24 hours at home and bring it in the next day to be evaluated. Of course, it would be better if it caught one of those episodes while you were wearing it.

Have you ever had your thyroid checked? That can also cause heart pounding and if your heart was beating fast enough, could also make you feel like you had to pass out.

If it happens again, take your pulse for one minute to see how many times it's beating in that one minute. Let your doctor know about this too.

Thanks Traveler and CajunGrl -

I have had my thyroid checked and it is normal. I'm only on 100 mg of doxcy 2x a day, so I really can't cut it down. I'm barely hanging on by a thread.

They did an EKG - I was not told if it was bad or good. I had my blood drawn three times and the first two were normal. However, the third one showed cardiac enzymes, but the doc told me it was not enough to be concerned. They sent me to have a nuclear stress test, which I passed. Of course I did not have any palpitations while I was being monitored. I feel freaked out because I don't know what is causing me to have palpitations.

I have alot of GI problems and I'm wondering if that could cause me to have palpitations. The day I had my issue I had woke up and my throat would not swallow right. I felt like I had something stuck in my throat and would not clear up. I had acid reflux the night before and my throat was really sore.

Hey again Angela,

I meant cutting back on the Magnesium, not the Doxy. You definitely don't want to cut back on the Doxy. If I'm not mistaken, I think I read the Doxy can sometimes cause tingling.

Also, one of the symptoms of Lyme Disease is heart palpatations.

If your EKG would have been abnormal, they would have told you and kept you in the hospital to monitor you further.

Yes...I did stop the magnesium for now. It is really scarey what lyme does to us, I hate the way it makes me feel:( I would have never dreamed in a million years I would be infected by a tick. I want so bad to get better and be able to help others.

Thanks for much for listening:)

I know what you mean. I feel the same way too. Maybe we can help others once we get better since we have been through the worst with Lyme. That's what I'm looking forward to.

Google magnesium online to see if the symptoms you describe can be associated with a high dose of it. I don't think it is. Magnesium is very safe and you will get diarrhea when it is taken in excess. It is critical for muscle and nerve function which is why it is so effective for cramps, muscle pain and tingling etc. The lyme bacteria deplete magnesium as well as B 12 (which a deficiency of is similar to lyme). Sometimes my muscles seize up. Damage from some drugs, like levaquin, can be minimized with high levels of magnesium.

Magnesium overdose can sometimes cause heart palpitations even without causing diarrhea (happened to me with one particular type of magnesium - no diarrhea, but my heart went bonkers with irregular rhythms and palpitations). I don't think overdose causes tingling, though. Could be two separate things going on, or could be something else...really difficult to say. I do know Lyme can also cause heart palpitations as well as tingling, so may be a flare that just happened to coincide with the starting of the Magnesium.

Razzle you may be right - I decided to go and see a Cardiologist to be on the safe side. My llmd agrees and thinks it is a good idea.

The doc also told me for now to stop the magnesium, which I did.

It is so hard to distinguish what is causing out bodies to go bezerk, on one hand I want to blame the lyme, but on the other hand my anxiety makes me think there is something else wrong with me. I know this sounds crazy but I have terrible anxiety with the lyme. My llmd believes I have Bartonella too!
