I know this was probably discussed already. But I am so confused. Do I get the Flu Shot or Take a chance? I am worried because of course we have Lymes and they say our immune system is already low. So how will it be able to fight the SWINE FLU? A college boy in his 20's already died last week in NYC from it.
Let's do a poll how many will get the Flu shot plus SWINE Flu shot?

I'm afraid too...I will not be getting a flu shot and I hope that I do not catch it at all. I have so many sensitivities right now.

I will be getting the regular flu shot this year. I get it every year. My immune system is really low and I have never caught the flu from getting the shot. I think it has helped me tremendously because every year, everyone around me gets the flu except me.

I WILL NOT be getting the swine flu shot. In my opinion, it is still too new.

I won't get any vaccines for anything. My doctors tell me it is too dangerous for me with my lymphopenia (immune compromised), plus I'm allergic to eggs and many other things that may be ingredients in the vaccines.

I use homeopathic Oscillococcinum taken once a week as a preventative against the seasonal flu. It works very well for me and my family, and I think it would also help to prevent the H1N1 swine flu as well.

I personally, lyme or not, would never ever get a flu shot. They say that it can't actually give you the flu, but it can and it does. Everyone I know who ever got one got sicker after it than they ever did with the flu. So, personally I take my chances. I even know a man who was paralyzed from the waste down for 5 years after getting a flu shot. Had a bad reaction to one of the "additives" in it. Scary stuff!
Just my opinion though:)

I believe too, that some people can get the flu after getting the flu shot. My husband has a really good immune system and he got the flu one year after getting the flu shot for the first time. Boy was he upset, lol. He's never sick. As for me and my two girls....we get the shot every year and we're fine. I used to get the flu every year until I started getting the flu shot.

Hi all,

Well...  I'm 52 and never got any type of flu shots in my life.  Before I became infected with lyme my gut instincts told me not to get it, have no idea why.  And to this day (knock on wood), I never got the flu.

As far as the swine flu shot I would recommend "not" getting it as it's too new, who knows whats in it, and as I posted before, remember when the lyme vaccine came out (I think it was called Lymerix?) and people got lyme from that vaccine.

I think the bottom line (at least for me) is to keep my immune system strong by eating right, exercising, daily detoxing, colon cleansing, etc.

I am trying to keep my stress levels low with this crazy economy but it's not that easy!

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Denise

Hey CG,

Been really busy!  When the weather was warmer I was out so much doing so many things or going to the beaches, now I'm playing catchup with my work.

I'm still sad over the loss of my brother..  It's been 5 months now and I just can't stop thinking about him.  I miss him so that part is very difficult for me.

I'm thinking of selling my house and moving to Vermont (my best friend of over 35 years lives there) where I would have less financial pressure and I would only be about 4 hours away from my mother.  But my house needs work, painting, new kitchen floor, etc. before I could list it.

Besides working, I am filling up bags from my basement and throwing them out.

Funny, when I got better from lyme I had new problems!  First was adjusting to being better and dealing with the world again, that was a huge transition for me.  Then I started peri-menopause and I think I'm almost there at the 12 month mark!   So life is sure funny, if it's not one thing it's another, right?

How have you been?  I hope all is well with you.

I have been getting the regular flu shot since I got the flu last time...that was several years ago. Have not had the flu since. I thought I was going to die the last time I caught the flu. Many people around me get sick with it every year, but I haven't since I started getting it.

I WILL NOT be getting the swine flu vac. I am still afraid of that, as someone else above me stated.

I am on day 3 of having the swine flu - let me tell you this has been one miserable experience.  My son visited last week and came down with it at the end of his visit, he was sick for 4 days and about three days after that I got it.  I have not been this sick in years, my fiance has missed 3 days of work to care for me, I haven't even been able to lift my head off of the pillow to drink anything.

I don't believe in vaccines (personal opinion) and I would never get one for any kind of flu.  With the way that we are all aware of our health and have access to good medical care, I would rather suffer through 4-5 days of this than risk the really long term damage that you hear about people with reactions to immunizations can get.  If you get sick, you have to go to the doctor.  I wonder sometimes if these people who die are doing that or trying to manage at home somehow.

Take care,
Pomfrey

I work in a skilled nursing facility and the flu shot is available to staff every year, and possibly the H1N1 as well. Some years I took the shot and others skipped it. I have not gotten any since before 2005 (when I began with Lyme), and feel it best not to at all at least for me. For one thing, by the time the germs hit our area, it seems to not be the ones that were covered by the shot. I feel it best to use the natural approach to keeping my immune system healthy.

On Saturday my husband and I went to pick up his mother in VA, which on the way back gave me time to really read the book Herbal Antibiotics by Stephen Harrod Buhner, and there are things in there that I have already been doing, that I wasn't thinking were for immune support. Whatever tea I make in the morning, begins with fresh ginger root. Also the sage, and other herbs and spices that I add have properties that fight bacteria and other infections. Maybe this is what has kept me from getting as ill as I could have been? I keep reding as much as I can on natural holistic healing. I don't know why I haven't bought any books specifically on Lyme, but definitely will be getting his Healing Lyme.

Pomfrey,

Hope you are doing okay and feeling better soon! Try to keep drinking!

I'm not a huge conspiracy theory buff, but right now, I don't trust the H1N1 vaccine at all. And, I've never received a flu shot and don't plan on getting one this year. I'll find out Wednesday if I produced any antibodies to the pneumonia vaccine I got talked into..... soley for the purpose of determining wheteher or not I had any type of immune sytem left to produce antibodies. If not, then it's IVGG.

Jelaine,

I think it's a good idea to check for antibodies. Dr. C. Is smart. I may be doing that test soon too.

I have never gotten a flu shot,  but this year I am seriously considering it.  I had the flu last year and it really knocked me out,  I don't think I could handle getting it again this year while I'm still trying to recover from Lyme and possibly other stuff that hasn't been diagnosed yet.

Deejavu!!! You actually told us your age??? I'm not that far behind you - shhhhh!!!!

I won't get the regular flu shot - whatever actually happens, I always get very sick after one! So I decided, why would I do that to myself??

As far as the Swine flu shot - well I'm in the group with it's too new of a thing & I really don't want to be one of their test subjects!

Although, the media has really got my mom up in arms about it - she is really worried that I will get it if I don't take the shot. rolleyes

So I keep reassuring her that I don't leave the house enough right now for her to even worry about it. And I thought raising kids while I had LD was tough!!

Yeah Traveler, I did, I did!!
Actually I feel younger because I slept 10 years of my life away from the lyme!  So I'm really 42!  yeah

Good idea Deejavu!!!
So all of us chronic Lymies ought to get time off our age for having slept - or just watched from the sidelines -dazed!!

Sooooo even though I've been infected at least 40 yrs now, I only slept about 20 of those yrs (rough guesstament) away -- I LIKE this idea!!

as CG stated above, I will be getting the regular flu shot this year. I get it every year. My immune system is really low and I have never caught the flu from getting the shot. I think it has helped me tremendously because every year, everyone around me gets the flu except me.

I WILL NOT be getting the swine flu shot. In my opinion, it is still too new.

last time I had the flu, there was 2 different types going around. 1 was a upper GI infection and the other was a lower IG. I GOT BOTH :(((

after that i get the shot every year and so far so good. i even finely talked my b/f into getting it this year. only took me 3 years to get him to get the shot (he is a big baby) LOL

I saw some who said they get the flu after taking the shot. the shot can not cause you to get the flu. most times its do to the fact that there are so many different types of flu going around your shot didnt cover you for the type you got.

so as in everything thing else study up and know what types of flu are in your area and make sure your flu shot covers that type of flu.

as for the N1H1 shot, it was in the news here that if you work in the med feild you will have to get it or you can lose your job. i find this to be a crock of.... yep thats just wrong if you ask me.

its like if your forst into it, then if they have troubles who is going to pay for it? hmmm i bet there boss wont. or if it kills someone. well there is no amount of payment that will compensate for that.

its like geees last time i looked we did live in the USA. and freedom of choice well it seems to be flying out the window here now.

sorry for the long post. but it just blows my mind and makes me so mad, when we are dictated to about our health. then there are us folks who are dying due to diseases and cant get a Dr. to treat us properly.

wishing everyone well this flu season

Hi RD,

I hear what you are saying, no one should be forced into getting any shots!  Anyway my Mom gets the "regular" flu shot every year without fail, and she never got sick or got the flu.  Is there a Flu Czar? idea

Traveler, we can have 2 different ages like doggies do?   Human years and lyme years, LOL!  In my case, it was the Ehrlichiosis that made me sleep alot (normal for that coinfection) and when I got better it was really scary!  I didn't know what to do first being awake all the time!  For all those years that I was sick I just kept bagging all my junk, clothes that didn't fit me (I gained weight) and throwing them down in my basement....
