Has anyone experienced with acute sound sensitivity? I don't see this as being common, but for me, it is a huge problem and is keeping me very isolated.

I get agitated quickly from some sounds, and others I just seem to not be able to handle well from time to time.

I have discovered that when I do go out, if I use my mp3 player - soft music & songs I just still really enjoy - it really helps me from getting agitated, or just plain cranky!!

I used to HAVE to have music on low whenever I tried to rest. Now, I can't stand to have music on most of the time - even when I'm NOT trying to rest!!
I'm sorry that I couldn't be more helpful =)

I have this. In the beginning (first few years) all of my sesnes were all super-hyper. I too had never experienced anything like that, and on top of being told "it's all in your head" for over a year and a half, it really scared me. But I believe this is common with Lyme disease.

My hearing was so accute, I was hearing things that others couldn't.... I've told this story before, but here it goes again; I was hearing a mosquito (in the middle of winter) in the den of our home. I would look around and "swat" at nothing. It made me crazy for days.... until one evening when my husband said he could hear it too. Turned out to be an air filter in a vent that was just a little off center and it was vibrating everytime the heat came on. My hearing was so accute that I was hearing a high pitch vibration. I also had auditory hallucinations.... marching band music that I thought was coming from the nearest high-school..... but no such music existed. Recently I tried to go to the movies (I haven't been to a movie in years). We went to see Inglorious ******s. I barely made it through the previews (by then I had napkin pieces stuck in my ears). I made it about 15 minutes into the movie and was almost in tears, it was too loud and I left for a few minutes, as I was returning to the theater my husband walked out and said "I'm not putting you through this"... he also said it got pretty gory and he could see I had been crying. And then on the way home I cried, because we never go anywhere because of this stupid Lyme disease.

I also had several months of super-hyper smelling. I could smell spaghetti sauce which had been made days earlier... onions were almost unbearable. The smelling thing has gotten better I also could not tolerate air-conditiong. It felt like icicles being stabbed into me. We live in FL and I was wearing sweatshirts. Now I have the opposite problem, I constatntly sweat and am too hot. I have the air on 71 degrees and a fan blowing on me.

Now I refer to it as sensory overload. I cannot tolerate an assault on my senses. Biggest problem now (besides sweating under my boobs - WHICH I HATE - WHO WOULDN'T?) is when too much noise happens at once. Like having the TV on and having my husband try to talk to me and then having the phone ring.... it's like something has got to go. Now, I have to put the TV on mute to talk with my husband. Just like not being able to "multi-task" anymore... I cannot multi-sense... it's just too much.

Yeah, I get the sensory overload thing too, along with the sensitive hearing (particularly with certain sounds - clicking or smacking sounds are the worst for me), a really sensitive nose (accused of hallucinating odors that I KNOW are real) and tongue (can taste individual minerals in some foods). I've read that the hyperacute senses is a known Lyme symptom. My guess is it is from the neurotoxins the Lyme bacteria produce that happen to irritate the part of the brain or nerves associated with the sense that is hyperacute, but I don't know this for sure.

Take care,

Thanks for the answers. I've struggled with this so much. It's caused, if I understand correctly, by an inflamed cranial nerve which affects ears and eyes. We live in a very noisy world! This started gradually a few years ago, but once I started abx, became horrible. Hubby got me noise canceling headphones which I wear when riding in the car and when the neighbors are mowing (which is all the time).

Has it gotten better for you?

I know all of our neighbor's "mowing" times - AND leaf blowing.  When I was a kid, we used to bag up the leaf and debris..... NOW WE BLOW IT AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!

My sound sensitivity has really improved with the lyme treatment. The other thing that really helped was anti-anxiety meds. Seemed to calm all of it down. I don't like bright sunlight either but it was never as bad as the sound thing.

My recent neuropsych exam showed I have a very slow processing speed. I think that's why I can't multitask. I can't track info from a second (or third) source because my thinking speed can't take it all in fast enough and make sense of it.

I do the same thing - if the TV is on and my wife wants to talk - I have to turn the TV down, ask her to start over, and give it my full attention.

Just an update - Today, I have had the additional pleasure of have 2 county tree cutting trucks planted directly accross the street.... they've been cutting tree limbs ALLLL day. Every time a truck backs up; BBBBBEEEEEPPPPPP BBBBEEEEPPP BBEEEEEPPP.... and now THEY'RE BLOWING LEAVES AROUND! On top of that, my own lawn guy was here at 9am sharp (I shouldn't b#$%^, but will do so anyway) AND the doctor's office next door? Her lawn gut showed up just after the limb cutters.......................... AND THEY'RE STILL HERE!

I AM BLOCKED INSIDE MY OWN DRIVEWAY AND AM UNDER CONSTANT AUDIO ASSAULT - AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
