Ugh! I get this every year. The weather has been so crazy around here lately. I've been taking Vitamin C everyday and just took some echinacea too. I have some nose spray with steroids because I can't take antihistamines, and I'm debating on whether to use it or not. I feel a headache coming on from being so stuffed up.

Anyone have any suggestions? I don't like taking any OTC drugs or decongestants because they all make me feel really loopy.

Chicken soup, Tea, OJ, and using a neti pot really helps. Though it takes some getting use to. Here is a couple links on how to do it.

It sure does clean everything out.
My family and I have been enjoying my life without dairy gluten and soy for many years.

Found out about it in spring of 2009 that I have been living with Lyme for over 8 years. My symptoms of Lyme have been Mini-Strokes/TIA's, Hashimoto's disease, swelling of my liver and kidneys. Anaphylactic reactions to raw apples, raw carrots, and Beef. Allergies to dairy, gluten, and Soy.

A couple tips on the netti pot I never see mentioned but I think are very helpful.

If the water stings then you have to much salt and if you get the sensation of drowning you don't have enough salt.
When the mix is just right it won't bother you

The warmer the water (with out burning or being silly) the faster it cleans out the mucus.

Keep your nose at a downward angle to keep the water away from your ears.

Hey CG,
So sorry to hear that you're down with a cold.
I usually cook a big pot of chicken soup, with lots of onion & garlic!!! Hubby doesn't want to get too close anyway! giggle!

But a word of caution on the nose spray with steroids!

yogamom,

Thanks for the instructions. I appreciate it.

Traveler,

I know! I know! I was getting desperate! I don't usually use it unless I really need it. I wound up not using it last night. The echinecea helped a LOT. It made me feel like I was herxing and I am vibrating again but I feel so much better. I don't mind suffering one day to feel better.

I just discovered the netti pot (mine is actually a bottle) recently and can testify to its effectiveness.  I buy little pre-mixed packets to put in the bottle so there is no worry about too much or too little salt.  Really important not to tilt your head forward or it will feel like when you get water in your nose while swimming.  When I'm desperate I am very glad I have a steroid nasal spray to help open things up so that I don't end up with a terrible headache.  I hope you are feeling better soon.

lol Traveler! You're a complete nut! In a good way of couse, hehe;)

Rose: I get very bad headaches sometimes if I don't use the nasal spray. The spray really does help. I have a natural spray too that I try to use first though but it burns my nose and my throat.

Where did you get your netti pot?

cg - I use a NeilMed Sinus Rinse bottle with Sinus Rinse saline packets. There's a fill line on the bottle for water; I dump in one packet, shake and I'm good to go. These are available at most major drug stores. My daughter has a NasaFlo Neti Pot. To me that looks harder to use, and you can't see through it to easily ascertain the fill line. Also, she has to tilt hers up to get the water into her nose; my bottle has a stem that goes to the bottom of it so I just hold the bottle straight under my nose and squeeze gently to get the water in. I was afraid to use it until my daughter came over and showed me how. Maybe you will be braver than I am.

I know steroid nasal spray isn't a health food, but like you, when I need it, I need it and I will do whatever I must to keep from getting a terrible headache, too.

I hope this sinus rinse works as well for you as it has for me; it's really like a miracle for me when nothing else worked.

vitacost.com is a great site that I discovered, they have netti pots there. I think they are pretty cheap too. In the stores they can run over $20.00.
