I commented on another post about this but wasn't sure if it would be seen so started this one- is taking mega doses of vit D bad for our immune system?? My son is on 5000iu 1 time a week and i will probably be taking a supplement too when i get my results back.

Cajungrl you mentioned being on vit D- how have you been doing on it?
The reason i ask is because someone told me vit D helps regulate autoimmune issues- when i googled it i found two sides- the american cancer society says its beneficial in treating cancer and helps "boost" the immune system.   I'm very confused- is it supposed to suppress the immune system for autoimmune issues or boost it????

Anyone with comments on this or also taking vit D thanks for any responses!

It is known that there is a link between low vitamin D status and increased risk of developing autoimmune disorders. I think what the ACS is trying to say is that the vitamin D helps regulate the immune system so that it is less likely to jump into the autoimmune direction.
I have also read that macrophages (immune cells that engulf and digest bacteria, etc.) are more effective at doing their job when there is adequate vitamin D in the body.

I hope this helps - take care,

Hi finding,

If you do a google search on "Vitamin D helping Immune System", you will find plenty of links saying how Vitamin D actually helps balance out the immune system. I have never read anything about it suppressing the immune system. Here is a explanation off of a great site I just read.

Vitamin D plays an important role in activating the immune system, fostering the "innate" immune response and controlling over-reaction of adaptive immunity, and as such may help control autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Here is the link to the site:

Btw, I just took my first dose two days ago so I think it's a little early to say but so far, I'm great. I've taken this dose before, two years ago, with no problems. I think I have auto immune issues as well so it is imperative that I at least try it again.

Wait until your bloodwork comes back before starting supplementation. Your levels will tell your doctor how much you should be taking. My level was 13.5 and the normal range is from 60-300, so I was pretty low. From what I've read, it is better to be in the 100's.

THanks for the responses- makes sense to me! keep me posted cajungrl! gee- i did start taking some- not smart i know b/c i have no idea what i need, hopefully it wasn't too much- my son was so low i figured i was too- we both don't get outside enough- and he was actually drinking milk-ive cut back on dairy products almost entirely b/c of the sugar. No telling how low i am.

my emotions are out of wack again- i did good yesterday after meeting with my counselor but today i am a total wreck- and it's my hubby's b day! I can't get out of my head all the problems that i've accumulated- lyme, co infections, parasites, gut issues, absorbtion issues... being alone with 2 kids during the day and feeling sad about being alone- I keep telling myself to buck up and then some silly worry comes back.

Cajungrl, you are a great moderator of this forum and i have developed a lot of respect for you- with everything on your plate you still find ways to encourage us- I'm just 21 and i see my "problems" pilling up and wondering how am i going to fix this, how am i going to do that, and then my brain gets tired and i wish someone else would do the thinking. How did i let myself get this bad without knowing it? Honestly 9mths ago i didn't know a thing was wrong with me- and now my body is a big medical question mark.

awwwww, thank you:) You will get through this. Being young is a good thing. Younger people recover faster.

I am like I am because I have experience on my side. You will get that as you get older. I still have bad days though. You just don't see it, lol.

I'm trying to be strong right now- and it's working only 25% of the time! lol. Are there times when you were just so sure that you might not make it another day? I mean that you were convinced you were going to "kick the bucket"? I hate that feeling that i get- in the moment i am so scared- and i can feel that fear building and it's like i don't know what to do with it. I'm having terrible head pressure right now and it just makes me wonder how long can i go with bone popping, and head pressure, and stomach doing flip flops and gurgling- and cold hands and feet and on and on...

I dont even know how to describe the fear anymore i just want it to go away- a thousand thoughts keep coming back like- is my head going to burst from this pressure? Even writing that i know it sounds nuts, but i'm still afraid.

My Vitamin D level came back in the low 20's. I take 2000iu daily. There are liquid drops you can get for your son if he doesn't like the little capsuls you can just squirt it on some toast.
