Hi folks,

I'm learning about how Lyme Disease affects people differently, and I want to understand HERXING better.

If you have had a Herx related to Lyme Disease, please share your story. Did it happen with anti-biotics? How long after you started your medication did it happen? What was it like, and how long did it last? How long have you been suffering from Lyme Disease?

Thanks, I look forward to hearing your stories.

I asked my Doc if he could explain Herxing. He said simply, if you are having a bad day.. that's a herx. That is of course if you are under treatment. I mark on a calendar my good and bad days. Now that I am in my 2nd month of doing that, I can look back and see that my "bad days" are the same week each month.

JennInPA,

Thanks for sharing. May I ask you a couple questions?

1. What constitutes a bad day for you? Can you describe your symptoms?

2. What kind of medication are you taking, and how long have you been under treatment?

3. How long have you been suffering from Lyme Disease, or your overall symptoms?

Herxing is when you are on treatment and all of your symptoms get a lot worse. If you have muscle/joint pain, then the pain gets worse. You may feel like you have the flu and may also run fever. Some old symptoms may come back and some new symptoms may start up. This is caused by the die off from the Lyme bacteria.

When I herx, my body pain gets a lot worse. Sometimes I can barely walk or move. I tend to run a low grade fever too. I have Bartonella so the bottoms of my feet usually hurt pretty bad as well. Sometimes I have heightened anxiety, smells, and am sensitive to light and sound. It all depends on where the bacteria is in ones body.

There is no set time when one will herx. Some people herx right away like me and others take weeks to months. It depends on how much die off is happening and how fast your liver is getting rid of the toxins.

1. Bad day for me is lots of pain, sometimes exhaustion, and sometimes it's only memory issues.

2. I am on Fluconazole & Cefidinir - I was on Doxy for about 8 weeks then went to a new doc who put me on the Fluc and Cef. I have been on that for about 6 weeks. I feel much much better on my new treatment. However since all this snow and bad weather I have been in more pain than ever. I see my LLMD tomorrow. I also have been on a probiotic since January as well as Milk Thistle and Vitamin D. I am an herbal girl, so I was taking them before I knew I had Lyme. Quercetin and Emu Oil have helped me more than anything, they really helped with my chest/arm pain.

3. I was officially diagnosed in August of this year, however I've had symptoms it seems since I was a little girl. I did a 2 month cleanse in Jan-Feb and apparently it caused me to herx and bring out my Lyme symptoms and it's just gotten worse since. I feel normal more days than not though.
