Hi all. My 9-year old son is on his 3rd round of anti-biotics for Bartonella. He's been on Zith for 5 weeks and just started Rifampin yesterday. Immediately (an hour or two) after he took his first dose of Rifampin, he got a strange oval rash on his stomach -- on both sides -- almost a mirror image (very weird!). He also had lots of single bumps on his torso, front and back. He was so itchy we had to give him Benadryl. I'd post a photo but I'm not sure how.

Has anyone had this happen? Is it the bugs fighting back? (Is it a good sign?)

Thanks for any help.

Hi Need some zs,
I just wanted to respond to your post. I'm not sure if this is from the Bartonella, or a reaction to the ABX. Be sure to call his doctor and let them know. Take a picture of all rashes and skin outbreaks. It's important to keep a daily log of your sons symptoms.

Have you seen any changes since your last post?

I agree with Cheez. Also, you might want to rule out yeast/fungal infection.
Hope he feels better by now. Best wishes, bablymers mom

Thanks for your responses. His rash is gone now -- it only lasted a few days. I did take photos to his doctor and he thought it was the Bart making a statement and not a reaction to the abx.

I am on the same protocol as my son now (a few weeks behind in treatment) so we'll see if I get the same reaction!

Good to hear it's not a reaction to the ABX. I hope the little guy is handling the treatment well.

Best wishes

When did you and your son get lyme and bart?
Did you catch it early on?

My kids got the bulls eye but never a rash.
But the itching skin with a rash is the body reacting to the drugs.
Just like yeast is telling you that your body is getting too much abx.
Is Dr. J treating your son?
If so....you can tap on me specifically and we can chat.
Are you also giving your son pro biotics? And vit C and auto immune support vitamins?
This is the single most important thing that you can do for him.
Our family all got lyme in 2004. It has been a long battle. But all is well now with my children. Feb 8 TH of 2009 is when I left Envita. And I am celebrating a year of perfect health.

The body does not itch and get rashes from a bacteria dying off. The bart does not speak out like that.
I am alergic to pennicilan. I was given it at a hopital once. I broke out in a rash on my chest and my body itched. I then started having trouble breathing.
I know know that I cannot take this drug or any of its simular abx cousins. This is why my baby got over her lyme...on omoxy and I did not because I had to take doxy.

When Lilly got lyme again in the summer of 08 she was put on amoxy, 1,200 for 30 days. She herxed like craxy mid way with a fever of 106 I was out of my mind with worry. But then she was well.
Because of her constant exposer to lyme, like every summer, she has arthris sometimes and is prone to mirgranes. She is 6 now.
I keep her on immune boosters. And vit C. And to keep her from getting stressed, bu keeping her on a routine and structured life.
She is my fragile child. But has not had a fever over 100 in a year. I did take her to Dr. J. in Dec of 08. He put her on such heavy abx. It was unreal. She was throwing up all of the time and get really sick. So we did not continue the treatment and did not go back.
He did stop the trend that she was on, being sick every two weeks out of the month that she had had since she was 11 mos old.
Now we try to keep her diet very good. And she only drinks clean water. That is it. We have a big cold bottle in the kitchen of Crystal. That is all she wants now. But since kids get lyme over and over, it is most important to build up their immune system to be able to deal with the disease.
