Well I had always thought that yoga was a bunch of crap. Honestly. Other than stretching. But I am hearing really interesting things about the immune system and oxygen in the blood and on and on.
So....I only started doing hot yoga for stress. That is all. So that I do not kill anyone...lol. Plus after years of not being able to walk very well and all of the neck pain and back and legs and hips. I wanted to do something that was not high impact. Because after I started working out again after being sick for so long. I hurt so badly all over. It just did not make me feel any better at all. My old workouts made me feel bad.
So I started the hot yoga. All they talk about it how it releases stress....and detox's the body, and how it helps ozygen flow to heal your body and how diseases cannot survive in a body with healty blood with lots of oxygen in it. I was like...????What???
Really???
Okay, so I know that I could not have done Hot Yoga before with all of the abx that I was taking and my high fevers. I would have thrown up and fainted.
I have to say that it does make me feel great, relaxed and it gets rid of the pains in my neck and back. I think it is just a fancy way of stretching..lol
But when I look at the women in my class. They are in such wonderful shape. But they are also a bunch of heath nuts. But since stress is the biggest killer and since Lyme sends our immune system into a mess, and that in turn screws up our central nervous system...well....I think that this is a good thing for lymies. But goole yoga and see what it says. It makes sense to me now.
Managing stress is the most important thing to get better and stay better. No?

I don't do the hot yoga although I plan to try it soon. I've been practicing yoga on and off for about 8 years now and find that it helps a lot. It helps keep me flexible and has improved my strength and balance.

It's much easier to relax after yoga because my muscles feel loose and the tension in my shoulders is reduced.

I sweat like crazy in the hot yoga and this is what is supposed to detox us. But I could not have done this when I was ill. No way. Not with a fever.
But I am suprised how good it makes me feel. So relaxed, it is like getting a massage and having a glass of wine...lol. I couldn't drink for 5 years with my lyme and the migraines, so....now that I can drink..I am not going to start. Might as well detox and chill a better way.

Martha,

I just completed a 40 day program in vinyasa yoga..(power yoga in a room thats 95 degrees)  I initially went also just to stretch, and had no idea what I was getting myself into..  I have terible hip pain, and could barely do any of the poses in the begining,,,,, but now 40 days later, it has really opened me up....  My lyme doc even took my blood and he commented that it was so nice and red... filled with oxygen... I was like REALLY???  My hips no longer hurt like they used to.  For the first time in along time, I think that I might be able to put this in remission...  I could only dare to hope...

I feel really good too..    There are so many people in my class that HAD lupus, RA, Arthiritis, and now they are pretty cured...  I really think that there is something to this...  I know that I sweat like I never sweated before, and my lymph fluid is being moved...  Im not on any meds and plan to give this a go for the next six months....  I'm so glad Im not the only one who has discovered this...  I look forward to hearing your updates :)

I became a certified Bikram Yoga teacher in 2001. Bikram Choudry gave me a new spine and
saved my life. Everytime I walk up a flight of stairs i thank God for Bikram. I sponsored the first Bikram school in France in Marseille. I was so grateful to him and there was a young girl from Marseille that spent every penny she had to take that training. She had big health issues and was the most determined thing I had ever seen in my life. Coco deserved that school and the nicest thing that ever happened to me in my life is I was able to give her the funds to build it and keep it going for the first 2 yrs till it really caught on. People in Marseille are not into sweating and exerising. The first students she had were psycholoigist and cardioligists and other medical types and then the room was packed with all types of people.
I saw more courage in those hot yoga rooms while I was teaching in NYC also.

Bikram yoga is like yoga chemotherapy. You leave all the stress and toxins in the sweaty towel.

keep your electrolites up and maintain the rhythm of your breath. The first pranayama breathng series if not rushed will help you to coast through the entire class. long slow deep deep breaths. Even if you have never done yoga before if you keep going you will be able to do everyone of those postures. It is a medical yoga series very specificially designed by posture and order. each posture is done twice . first for the opening and second you get to go there. It is the ultimate discipline
and will change your life.

It is something to really look forward to when you get stronger and then you can get all
the rest of the toxins out of your body and have the best buffed butt you ever had in life.

Good for you MarthaVinyard and everyone else. You just brought back some great memories for me and somehing to look forward to after my treatment.

i can't wait to get back into those hot rooms.

Joanna!
wow that is so fantastic! I can't believe that even your Dr. made a comment about your blood. I was also so suprised to hear all of the stuff that my instructor was saying about the blood healing and it needing to be able to flow all over the body to heal it and all of that stuff. She even made comments about it killing diseases. I was like...uh...well...my lymie friends in the middle of their treatments would die in here.
So I guess the two do not mix. I don't want anyone who feels really bad on here to do HOT YOGA, you will faint.
But maybe start with the....dry one..ha.
Wow That is so fantastic that you are feeling that much better. And now that your core is stronger and you have done so many classes, you are going to get get stronger and even better flow and more oxygen.
I can tell you that I am glowing like a pregant women. My skin is great, yet is is weird with my skin just coming off all over me. I like what is does to my state of mind chilled out. It keeps me calm. And muscles lose.
I am so happy for you. Killer!
Keep up the good work! I am sure that you are drinking the tons of water...right? Have you seen those packets that you can add to your water with the electrolits? sp? Don't forget those. Plus they are loaded with vit c.
The room temp was 105 today. I almost threw up. I can only do it twice a week. But working up to more next week. Just may have to find a class that is not so darn hot. Its rough.

Dagger...you can handle it if you already know the poses. But not if you are running a fever.
I never thought that I could focus enough for yoga. My attention span is short. But maybe that is what helps.....the heat. I don't know. I have to ask why the heat is better or not. I am not sure.
But if it does have anything to do with detoxing then I am game. I am not going to go back into my super hard cardios anymore. My hips don't respond well to it anymore.
I don't know what or if I got permanent damage to my joints with the lyme. But I bet I did. So I am not going to test that or get set back. You know?

butti,
Yes I am only really going so that I will have a perfect butt..lol. I mean, the people in my class look like dancers.
The breathing is something that took me about a week to get. It is hard not to pant and breath through the mouth. But I have stopped that...And the class has so many people of different levels. I just try to hold steedy and find my core. My lower stomach and breath. I don't think that the poses are hard. I am very lember. But it is a 75 minute class...and I have to really make myself not leave the room.
We take huge waters in with us and I drink a ton already. Or I would get a crazy migriane for sure.
But I like the vib of the people there. All really into their health and in a natural way. And some coming in after chemo. Good energy in the room. And every one just glows and is so calm and at peace. It is a nice place to be in.

so butti when and where are you going to get your treatment? az?

I'm in my second week already. I am at the Mesa place because they took the medicare but it all the same lyme program.
Long Life is Dr K and his wife runs the place and really knows her stuff. Dr. K goes back and forth between envita and long life. I been getting the EDTA and Z antibiotic and OZONE and steam ozone . also the injections in accupunture points and the biomeridian machine routine. also the lymph wand took the swelling out of my neck and jaw. I haven't had one migrane yet which is shocking. tomorrow will be my 3rd abx treatment. Still in pain everywhere and can't walk on my left heel but I limped in that way. Oh and also been getting glutathione and that always helps my liver. My biggest problem is the pain in both feet and I'm a nervous wreck because.....I'm a nervous wreck.. ha ha. It's the brain fog and i can't even blame it on the treatment. I really made it here just in time. There was nothing left of me by the time I rolled up in the car and everyone is very nice and you can see some were sick at one time so they really get it and believe in what they are doing.

Be careful in the hot yoga ....electrolights....you can burn out. Bikram used to say the yoga really works in the savasana.
So the day off can be just as powerful. It is funny too. I used to teach on 48th st in manhattan and the front row was all dancers. ( they love the mirror especially for that standing bow) and then the fire men are in the back row with their slipped discs. miracles happen in those rooms. Even though they tell you not to eat before class try to make sure you got some protien in your body at one point earlier. It is an intense class.

you are so full of gratitude now it's like Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life!" really great !

Bucci,

What are they doing for you there? Sounds different than what Martha Vineyard has talked about. What kind of injections are you getting in your accupunture points and where? biomeridian machine? What is that? Is any of it helping? I have been sick for almost 40 years and not much has worked besides antibiotics. I limp too, but the glutathione has not helped. The lymph wand sounds interesting too. For migraines, I drink gatorade and sometimes that helps.

Theres a place that acutually takes medicare?????  Seriously???

Martha,

It really is great at relaxing and letting go of stress...  if I dont go for a couple of days, my son (whos 6) says "Ah mom, maybe you should go to yoga"  I seem to have much more patience :)  My skin looks great too, except now Im breaking out which is telling me that "crud" is really comming out of my lymph system..

:)

I wouldnt reccommend it if your on heavy duty antibiotic treatment, but even if you do feel just awful, racked with pain, if you can get there, and just be in childs pose and breath, I think it will really help.  I was so sick when I started 40 days ago, neurological issues, pain, spine issues, and I still went...  I had to atleast try as I am so tired of giving all of myself to this darn disease.  I am by no means in remission from my endeavor, but I am very hopeful I am on the right path,,, when I tell you I couldnt sit because of my hips, I am not kidding... that is no longer an issue... we put so much emphasis on these powerful medicatons to cure this illness when in my opionion, once its gone on for so long, the chance of curing it with antibiotics is nill.... (My opinion).

At least thats where I'm at...  and I will let you all know how I fair in the upcomming months... Martha, thank you for starting this thread...  Im assuming you live in Ma, that is where I was born and lived most of my life..  Westport area..  I now live in Pa and guess Im really greatful for this yoga studio as people travel like an hour just to  come to the classes cause no other yoga touches it...  I even tried a yoga class at the Y, and it didnt even compare... the heat is awesome and my body really likes it... Thanks again for starting this thread :) There are no coincidences

Hi,

I love yoga! I took Bikram Yoga for 3 years. I think it is a great detox tool. Just don't let the teachers push you to much. Listen to you body. Let your body be your guide. Three years was to much for me but it was very helpful.

I am a power vinyasa teacher. This is a flowing practice that synchronizes movement and breath in a room heated to about 95°.

I think yoga is the main reason I am doing so well. There are a few things to watch out for. Lyme causes swelling of the lymph. This can put pressure in areas that are not used to presser. You want to be gentle with the lymph and not damage it. Yoga is very good at helping things move in the lymph areas. The lymph requires movement to work. I always feel better if I do yoga. My mind is clearer. My lymph swelling goes down with the practice.

I like to mix up my practice depending on how I feel.

Yin yoga on slow days
Anusara on medium days
Power Vinyasa on days when I need more

It is so good to see how many of you are yogis.
My family and I have been enjoying my life without surgar dairy gluten and soy for many years.

Found out about it in spring of 2009 that I have been living with Lyme for over 8 years. My symptoms of Lyme have been Mini-Strokes/TIA's, Hashimoto's disease, swelling of my liver and kidneys. Anaphylactic reactions to raw apples, raw carrots, and Beef. Allergies to dairy, gluten, and Soy.

Hi I have been reading about the yoga you guys are talking about. If I am a newbie to yoga what should I start with? I have never heard of hot yoga before and I dont want to hurt myself while trying to make me better. Someone mentioned you could get burned? Any info would help greatly. Thank you!

I am new to yoga too. Just a month in. I am in beginer yoga that just happens to be in a hot room. Some rooms are hotter than others. Ours is 102-107. Not so easy for 75 minutes.
But I like heat and use to jog in 100. So that is just me.
But I could not have done this when I was really sick with all of the abx and out of my mind.
so this is after my detoxing and treatment at envita and getting well. I feel like the sweating and the heat detoxs me and helps me to focus.
I am loving the way it helps me to deal with stress. I just don't seem to get upset. I am very cool. Which is very good for the heart and a healing lymie.
My skin is glowing. And I sleep very well. Everyone goes at their own pace and can walk out if they want. It is a very calm and the people in these glasses, are mellow....:>)

Martha's Vineyard,

I don't mean to change the topic here, but did you also get acupuncture and use a biomeridian machine at envita. I didn't see you post about it. My fibromyalgia doctor is treating me for lyme and does some mild acupuncture on me, but it doesn't last very long. I live on pain meds. I am looking for a new doctor because my doctor does not know what to do with me anymore. I was diagnosed with Lyme a few months ago...

I think Anusara may be the best place to start. It really depends on the teacher. Try different classes and see what works for you. Usually yoga studios offer unlimited yoga for 2 weeks for $20.00. This is the best way to start. Go to different studios to find what works for you. Then after do some free on line videos in between classes. That way you have some guidance about your alignment.

Roxanne,
I have never done acupunture. But some women swear by it at my yoga place. I hate needles....but...
The ozygen tank that bucci is talking about is not part of the treatment plan at envita, or wasn't when I was there.
But I got the ozone treatment, which pumps the oxygen right into my blood and then directly into my body.
My treatments would go from 2 to 6 hours a day four days a week,
That was time hooked up to a tree having to sit still with a tube going into my port in my chest.
That was enough for me. When I did the edta, it was hard for me to walk sometimes. It is not a cake walk.
I did what they told me to do. And I tried to take it easy when I left the clinic. But honestly, I started feeling so good after 3 weeks after having been so darn sick, that I kept jumping on a plane....not checking out of the hotel. Just getting out and home to see my kids so that they could stop crying and see that mommy was not going to die.

Thanks Martha's Vineyard. I have fibromyalgia and pains everywhere in all of my joints. My fibro. doctor does some acupuncture which helps, but she is not a lyme doctor and has done all she could for me. I am hoping to find another doctor that does acupuncture for my pain and Lyme. I live in Arizona so I may just go and check out each of the clinics. I was under the impression they were the same, but it seems they are not. What is an oxygen tank? Is it something filled with water that you sit in??

If you live in Arizona then go see dr Korn at envita or life long medical where he takes insurance.
I was living down in Patagonia and went all over the place to end up back on Az. I wish I knew about this before I flew all over .
