Hi,

Is anyone drinking kefir daily while taking antibiotics? I have been drinking kefir daily but now that I have to take antibiotics I wonder if it will do any good to still drink kefir.  Or maybe it might do harm.  How far apart should I take these?

Hi Scaredicat!
I use kefir daily!! I make my own though, it has a lot more beneficial intestinal 'goodies' than commercially produced kefir.

If taking abx, you should allow at least 2 hrs between drinking kefir & taking abx.

Kefir is not harmful at all, even to those with dairy/ lactose issues, as it can be made with any milk - even nut 'milks'. I got interested in making my own after reading in the Yahoo group - Real_Kefir_Making.

I heartily recommend it for daily use to everyone!!! I have had a great improvement with my intestinal issues since including kefir in my daily routine & sorely miss it if I don't for some reason.

Feel free to email me directly, should you wish to. I'll be happy to answer all of the questions I can!!

Hi, I was just going to post something about this. I had been drinking cow's milk kefir, but since going on the antibiotics and this "lyme" diet, I have switched to coconut milk kefir.

From everything I've read it's a great place to get probiotics (though I still take a capsule form). Like anything else with antibiotics I drink it two hours after.

Traveler,

Where did you get your grains from? I searched craigslist and there is someone but he's about an hour from me. I've been using store bought coconut milk kefir but have been wanting to make my own. Is it difficult?

Hi Traveler,

I also make my own kefir each day. I'm the only one in the family "gutsy" enough to drink it. Glad to hear it won't interfere w/ the antibiotics treatment.

Lylaso,

From reading about kefir, I alway get the impression that cow or goat milk kefir is better than other types. May I ask why the "lyme diet" made you switch? You can buy the grains on ebay.

There are two reasons that were explained to me. Trying to keep processed foods at a minimum to aid in digestive health and because dairy prevents the full absorption of certain antibiotics. I would ask your doc if it's a concern for you.

This diet I am on was recommended by my accupuncturist. I was sent there by my LLMD (he also had lyme and got better at this center) I can drink raw cow's milk and Goat's milk, but of course I can't find either at my local supermarket. I do eat goat's cheese.

Milk kefir definitely tastes better than coconut milk kefir. I miss it! Thanks for the info I will look up the grains on ebay. Approximately how long did you have to wait for your first batch?

Hi all!!!
WOW! Our own little kefir group!!! :)
I got my grains from the Yahoo group Real_Kefir_Making - they ask for no money for the grains themselves, although the person requesting them may be asked to pay postage. I have sent out several 'packages' of kefir grains & now understand why postage is asked for sometimes.($5 -$7 per package when shipping within the U.S.)

OR- a person could go straight to the source & go to this website:
users.sa.chariot.net.au/~dna/Makekefir.html
I would encourage anyone even thinking of trying kefir or kefir making to read on this site - there are a whole lot of recipes, a chart on the actual beneficial bacteria found in homemade kefir (not the commercially produced kind, as those producers have to follow strict guidelines) & tons & tons of info on Kefir.

OR- anyone who feels comfortable enough sharing info with me, can email me & I could share a few grains. The strain I ended up with is quite productive - both in kefir making & grain production, and like the philosophy of the owner of that site - believe that basically everyone could use the help kefir gives & have no desire to "make money" by selling the grains.

Happy kefir drinking to all!! smilewinkgrin

((I am in no way connected to or receive monies from these places!!))

CaldoniaSun-
Are you drinking dairy or non-dairy kefir? Also, something that I had to do was to build up to drinking very much kefir at one time. I started out with only about 1/4 cup every other day.

Traveler,

It's the organic, plain dairy kefir. I'm ok with it if I use just a little. A few tablespoons over frozen blueberries is yummy!

My favorite is over blackberries, although when our wild strawberries ripened this year - that was well worth the wait!
