Hi -

For more than two years now, I've been troubled with small bumps on the side and back of of my tongue (no open sores). Also, underneath my tongue (called frenulum) that holds your tongue to the bottom of your mouth gets very sore and reddened at times. Hurts to talk when it's really gets sore. There has also have been times where my tongue gets thick on the side of it, occurs when these bumps increase and it effects my speech, words that begin with st.

I've been treated for Lyme disease for 2 yrs. now and this was one of my first three symptoms. Tongue, intermittent swollen neck glands, and severe muscle twitching and several more symptoms six months later. Primarily, I've been treated with Doxy, Zithromycin, and Flagyl for the last couple years which my symptoms have subsided by 90%. Dr. now switched me to Ceftin and Biaxin and we'll see if that takes away the tongue issue and the occasional joint flare ups.

Anyone have any similar problems with their tongue? Related to Lymes?

smfd3,
Hi & Welcome to the Lyme forum!!! I am really sorry that you have a need to be here, but his as a great place to learn, share & get understanding!!

Your issues with your tongue sound similar to some issues I have had over the years. I believe that those bumps are caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus. about 97% of the US will test positive for this virus, although only a handful will have many symptoms. This is the virus which causes Mononucleosis. I was dxed as chronic/acute back in '88.

There is quite a bit of info online about EBV, I would suggest you look into it as a possible cause/reason for the issues you stated.

Hope this helps some....
