After 2 years, I was just diagnosed by a lyme doc in Houston and IGenx Labs in Palo Alto. I'm actually kind of happy because I don't have MS, ALS, Parkinsons Disease, etc. I saw sooo many docs before I found a good one. I believe i got lyme when I visited NY in 2008.

My symptoms: Parkinson like shaking, paresthesias in hand and feet, legs weak upon exertion... stumble around, twitching especially on left side, cold feet (always wear socks), weird sensations in other parts of body, itchy left foot comes and goes... comes in cycles but cycles get worse (especially this summer)

Im taking
1) Flagyl for two weeks
2) Followed by Doxycycline for 6 weeks (2 100 pills daily)

Questions
1) Has anyone else had a similar situation? How long till you saw improvement? (I look forward to be able to swim one day and not wear socks all the time)

2) I have great difficulty swallowing large pills like doxycycline? Any advice?

Thank you.

1) I had some of the symptoms that you've had, but not all of them. It may take a few months for you to feel better. Are your feet cold to the touch or do they just feel cold?

2) For taking flagyl, one of my doctors suggested dipping them in olive oil. My doctor recommended it for reducing the stomach irritation. That part didn't work for me, but it made the pills much easier to swallow. Depending on which brand of flagyl you are taking, some of the pills are thick and tend to get stuck in the throat. I'm not sure if you can use olive oil on all of your pills. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you if there is any problem with that.

EDIT: If you've been infected for two years or more, your infection is probably well advanced. If I read your post right, you will be on 8 weeks of antibiotics. I hate to tell you this, but that probably isn't going to be enough. Hopefully, your LLMD will go by your condition and not by something he/she read in a book.

When I was taking Flagyll, I was told I could crush the pill as long as I took it with a meal to reduce stomach irritation.

Also, I've seen suggestions for swallowing pills include the use of butter/margarine to coat the pill to make it slippery so that it goes down more easily. I found that I have always done better with pills going down when I have a few bites of something to eat after taking the pills, just to help push the pills all the way down.

Hi Pablo!!
Welcome to our forum!! I am sorry to hear about how ill you have been, but you have found a great place to give & receive support and understanding.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with IH8Ticks in that it is likely if you have had a tick-born infection for 2 years without the right treatment, you may not be getting an appropriate amount of abx treatment.

Just how quickly you feel improvement is directly linked to what all your body may be dealing with. A lot of us end up with several different conditions as well as any tick-born infections we have acquired. There are several different types of infections carried by ticks & it is likely that you have more than one.Unfortunately the tests currently in use are not all that accurate.

May I suggest that you read through the thread at the top of this forum titled "New to Lyme?...Start here"? It has a lot of really good information. I would also suggest that you read as much as you can on Tick-born infections, you will need to be your own health advocate & so you will need to be as educated as possible about what you are living with.

As for the problems you are experiencing with swallowing pills, I agree with Razzle & IH8Ticks - coat the pills with something - olive oil being better than margarine, but whatever you can get to help!! I also make sure I have plenty to drink at hand & will also eat a few crackers or something else as Razzle said.

healing thoughts being sent your way...

Thank you all of you for your suggestions and info. My feet just feel cold... and my doc will have me on abx for longer... I just have to go in about 8 weeks.

Thanks for the pill swallowing tips. :)

I'm learning much from this site. :)
