I have a friend who has a 2 year old son that was just dxed with RMSF. I need to find info on treatments -the docs around here haven't got the slightest clue about any of the tick-born illnesses. I know there is a website out there just for parents of children with TBI's, but my lymie brain won't allow me to access that info.

Thank you in advance for any & all info.
Trav.

Trav, is this a new/acute infection? If so, I do know the child MUST be treated immediately w/ abx! MUST! Before abx, the mortality rate for RMSF was nearly 50%. My ex's brother died of RMSF last summer, because the Dr insisted it was the flu. At onset, this is probably the most serious of all TBIs. ALL Drs should know about RMSF!! The warnings have only been going on for over 30 yrs!!!

PS, last year when I got a new tick bite, my then LLMD prescribed Doxy -- he said he chose that because it is effective against RMSF and it was just to be safe.  I have no idea what would be best for a small child.

Hi +Lyme,
Yes, this is a new infection, but the child is on abx already. I haven't yet spoken with her - I found out through Facebook - and she is a young working mother, so I need to wait until she is home before I call her. I really wanted to have all of my little duckies in a row when I did speak to her - I knew if I posted on here that I could get good reliable info, instead of getting myself mired down in all the info that can be found elsewhere.

Hi Traveler,

So sorry to hear about your friend's child.   It's good that the child is on antibiotics, that's so important!

Anyway, maybe you could send her some links??

If you need more or if anyone else has some links, let us know okay?  Poor kid!

Thanks Deejavu!!!
Is there any way to find out how long the tx needs to be & what the dosage should be?
I would really like to make sure this child is getting enough of the right kind of tx.

Hi Traveler,

Your welcome..  I wish I knew more about RMSF.  Anyway, I think it depends on how soon the child was diagnosed, the child's symptoms, and weight.  Is it possible that this child can see a LLMD?  Do you know of any symptoms this child is experiencing?  Fever, nauseau, spots, etc.

Worse case:  If the child is really having a difficult time I would suggest taking the child to the ER as RMSF is not something to take lightly.  Very serious especially in young children..

Can't find many links regarding treatment and the length of time, but did find this one:

According to the link above it says this (don't know how accurate this is):

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is best treated by using a tetracycline (Achromycin) antibiotic, usually doxycycline (Vibramycin). This medication should be given in doses of 100 mg every 12 hours for adults or 4 mg/kg body weight per day in two divided doses for children under 45 kg (100 lbs). Patients are treated for at least 3 days after the fever subsides and until there is unequivocal evidence of clinical improvement. Standard duration of treatment is 5 to 10 days.

Keep us updated and good luck with your friend!

Good news!
It seems that somehow this child has managed to get the appropriate dose of the appropriate abx!!! Quite a feat for this area!!
The mother came by this am & we talked, she did some reading here on HW & she is aware of how serious this is.

So, things are well for this child!

Thanks all for your help!

That's really great Traveler!  I'm glad the mother was open minded, that's just wonderful!  Let us know how her child fares, okay?
