I've just been diagnosed with Lyme Disease after trying to convince the doctors what it was. They were extremely unhelpful and orginially told me to take antihistamines as it was just an allergic reaction.

I've now been given 2 weeks worth of Doxycycline antibiotics.
Any advice whether this will definitely cure it? and what I should do next.

I was bitten 3 weeks ago and the rash appeared a few days ago. I'm on the 2nd day of antibiotics and the rash is still spreading. I hope it will calm down soon.

Any advice would be appreciated as I realise how serious it is if not treated properly.

Hi Candi!!
Welcome to our forum!!! I'm sure that you will find us to be friendly, helpful & understanding.

It sounds like you have been doing some reading if you had to convince your docs that you had LD! Good for you!!! As you have already seen, you will need to be your own health advocate! In my mind one of the best things you can do for yourself is to read all that you can on these tick-borne infections, so that you can know what the doc is talking about & be better able to understand what kinds of treatments are out there. One of the best places to start doing some more reading is in the thread at the top of this forum titled "New to Lyme?...Start here".

You will be most helped at this stage of your infection by going to see a LLMD - a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor. They have studied & learned about these types of infections & are prepared to treat you aggressively - in most circumstances - with proper dosages of the type of abx you will need to actually make progress in killing off these infections.

2 weeks of Doxy is NOT enough! What dosage are you taking each time & how often are you taking it in a day? If you will kindly answer these questions, we could be of more help.

According to Dr. Burrascano's "Advanced Topics in Lyme Disease";
Doxycycline can be very effective - but only if adequate blood levels {of Doxy} are achieved either by high oral doses (300 - 600 mg/day) or by parenteral administration {in this case -by IV}.

Another thing I should mention is detoxing - by detoxing regularly, you will help your body get rid of the toxins that are created when the abx kill off these little critters. There are quite a few things that you can do to help your body detox. There is a great post about detoxing in the thread "New to Lyme?...Start here!" by one of our wonderful members who has been healed of tick-borne infections & is still posting here on HW.

I do hope this info is helpful to you. Hang in there!!

Candi:
Please don't play with this disease. Take it very seriously because it is very serious and if you don't take care of it early on, it may hunt you for the rest of your life! I was given 3 weeks of abx the first time I was diagnosed (last year). I trusted my PCP and never questioned him about it. My symptoms went away for a few months and then I started to have much worse symptoms including neurologic stuff and memory pbls, etc

Jefferson Hosp. recommands 4-6 weeks. Bacteria works in cycles, so in order to kill ALL of it, you will have to take abx for at least 4 weeks. Otherwise, the 2 week dose will kill some of it, but some will still be left in your body. It is much harder to get rid of it later. you have a great chance to recover 100% from it bec. you caught it early, so don't blow it. I and many others never got the rash, so we have no idea how long we were infected before starting treatement. If I knew 2 years ago what I know now, I would not be here. I relapsed within months and I am now again on abx, the pain is unbearable at times and a lot of other ugly stuff.

Tell you doc that you are still sick and ask for more abx. DEMAND TREATMENT! If he/she won't give you more, go to another doc. It will be much more costly later if you relapse with the posibility of never recovering 100%.

ALSO, listen to Trav and read the thread and everything she suggested. You will find out that beside LYME, the tick that bit you may carry other bacteria. DO NOT let this go, or you may get so sick, that this time around will be a breeze. Study the other types of diseases that may be associated with a tick bite. Treating lyme will not help you if you don't treat the other diseases that you may get from the same tick bite. Doctors are clueless when it comes to Lyme. If you can, go to an LLMD (lyme literate MD). They will look for co-infections as well as lyme. To find an LLMD in your area, Post your state and town in a new topic and someone will contact you. Everyone here is very helpful, some have been seek for decades, so welcome and let us know if we can help. Try to read the other topics similar to yours, yyou will see you are one of many people that have been misled by docs;

I would do anything to change places with you!

Good Luck!

Find a lyme literate doctor, don't give up. There is a lot of hope for you! Also, photograph your rash using something also in the photo to compare size. Save this photo for the rest of your life.
