Samento & Banderol found significantly effective in Lyme treatment

A tick-borne, multisystemic disease, Lyme borreliosis caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi has grown into a major public health problem during the last 10 years. The primary treatment for chronic Lyme disease is administration of various antibiotics. However, relapse often occurs when antibiotic treatment is discontinued. One possible explanation for this is that B. burgdorferi become resistant to antibiotic treatment, by converting from their vegetative spirochete form into different round bodies and/or into biofilmlike colonies. There is an urgent need to find novel therapeutic agents that can eliminate all these different morphologies of B. burgdorferi. In this study, two herbal extracts, Samento and Banderol, as well as doxycycline (one of the primary antibiotics for Lyme disease treatment) were tested for their in vitro effectiveness on several of the different morphological forms of B. burgdorferi (spirochetes, round bodies, and biofilmlike colonies) using fluorescent, darkfield microscopic, and BacLight viability staining methods. Our results demonstrated that both herbal agents, but not doxycycline, had very significant effects on all forms of B. burgdorferi, especially when used in combination, suggesting that herbal agents could provide an effective therapeutic approach for Lyme disease patients. -- from article in Townsend Letter, July 2010

Samento and Banderol are found to be important herbal allies, in this study conducted by our friends at the Lyme Disease Research Group of the University of New Haven. In our interview with Eva Sapi, PhD, director of the graduate program in Lyme disease research, she promised that she was quite determined to find an effective agent that would "kill the bug -- and soon." So, this study is proof that Dr Sapi is following through with her promise. It is a hopeful note in the battle against the nasty bacterial complex we know as Borrelia burgdorferi.

Personally, I am very excited about these findings. Samento and Banderol have been my medicine of choice for several years. These herbal extracts have certainly been effective, helping me pull myself out of a painful, groggy nightmare and get my life back on track. Those two herbal tinctures daily, plus a host of other supportive supplements, a regular exercise routine, and a sugar-free, whole-foods diet, have made all the difference. Samento and Banderol have truly been my allies in this cross-training approach to healing.

Please read the entire article reporting on the study, which you can find on the website of the Townsend Letter, the Examiner of Alternative Medicine. The article is titled: In Vitro Effectiveness of Samento and Banderol Herbal Extracts on the Different Morphological Forms of Borrelia Burgdorferi by Akcrapa Datar, Navroop Kaur, Seema Patel, David F. Luecke, and Eva Sapi, PhD -- Lyme Disease Research Group, University of New Haven

Members, to learn more about the work of the University of New Haven Lyme research program, please listen to our interview with Dr Eva Sapi. You will also find more information about Lee Cowden, MD, and his herbal protocol.

I actually tried Samento, twice, and got a terrible Herx reaction...just the same as antibiotics. I'm using an herbal tincture now, made up of four other herbs also known to fight Lyme bacteria... I'd be very curious to know if others have had success with Samento! Thanks for posting!

madriver:

Maybe is good you got a terrible herx reaction. I am not getting much herx from the abx (I only take 1500 mg of amox/day). What is amazing is that those remedies kills "several of the different morphological forms of B. burgdorferi (spirochetes, round bodies, and biofilmlike colonies) ", so that sounds good to me! Maybe the reason you herxed so badly is bec the toxins were left behind from 3 kids of bacteria, rather than just from the spirochetes that are killed with other treatements?

It seems people have very differing opinions on Herxing... My doctor thinks it''s a good sign that #1) there's still an active infection; and #2) the treatment is doing something (i.e. working). Although he doesn't want me to suffer, I think there's a certain amount of Herx that you just have to tolerate and deal with...because that's what treatment of Lyme causes. It's just finding that right dose that's low enough to tolerate, but high enough to work that can be tricky!

I know very little about the science of Lyme (I know the general stuff about spirochetes, biofilms, cysts, inaccuracy of testing, etc.) but roundbodies and colonies are beyond my Lyme vocabulary...and even thinking about learning more is WAY too overwhelming for my brain right now!!! I'm leaving my faith in the hands of the experts that they will continue doing research and fighting for our medical rights...

I think roundbodies are the cysts and I think the colonies are when the spirochetes stick together in a big ball and emit some sort of gel to protect themselves from being reached by the antibiotics. When the environment is perfect for them to come out, they trasform into spirochetes again--that is my understanding from what I have read.

Hi Simela,

These products have been around for many years.. Before I started Dr. J's protocol I tried Samento and it didn't do anything for me..   I tried all sorts of alternative medicine but the only protocol that worked for me was Dr. J's protocol because he addresses every aspect of the body, mind and spirit..

In my opinion it's not about taking some products, it's about looking at oneself as a whole which means addressing every aspect of one's body and their life:  stress levels, ridding the body of toxins on a daily basis, a healthy diet, building one's immune system, etc.  Yes, I know it's not easy..   It was not easy for me to ask my now ex-husband to leave because he was causing me too much stress but I did..  Today we are very good friends.  But I needed to do what was best for me and my health.   Then I learned about detoxing and diet.. All of this must be incorporated in order to get better..  Taking a pill or some herbs is not the answer..

Okay, getting off my soap box now!  scool

Cheers!
Denise

Denise and Trav: rolleyes I think you both need to get off the soap box, bec. I need it all for myself! LOL
I called my insurance company today and they wont' pay for rocephin, they won't pay for dr visits, and the first $4500 is deductable. I asked why the deductable is so high, and they said it is because I have family and the family deductable is $4500. I said to her "are you punishing because I am maried and have kids?" Looks like my insurance is completely useless to me right now!  It seems like I am having a match with most docs and insurance company people lately!  I said to her, well since you won't pay for my medication, maybe I should just lay down and die!

As for the herbal remedies, I didn't know anything about them, the article was sent to me from one of the lyme sites that I signed up for info. I thought it may help someone...

Well, thank you for posting that!! It really is bound to help some people - as we get a lot of new people over time.

With your position with your insurance co & docs, maybe this is a time you should consider 'alternative' therapies???

~just a thought!

Okay Simela,

I got off the soapbox to make room for you!  And Traveler is right, we do get lots of newbies who don't know about alternative medicine..  I'm under much stress right now so please forgive me okay?  Moving to another state and doing this all by myself is not easy...  I'm saying bye bye to my house that I have lived in for 15 years but I need to do this for me..

As far as insurance companies, that's all I have been hearing from lots of people, that their rates are going sky high (I watch fox news so I listen to their theories to the reasons why this is but I do not want to get into politics - against forum rules)..    Let's put it this way, I can't wait until November to vote!!

Back to alternative medicine:  if there is any time that peoplel should start learning about it, I believe the time is now due to crazy insurance costs, the high cost of seeing doctors, etc.

I have read many alternative medicine books and by far, the best in my opinion is Dr. J's book "Beating Lyme Disease"..  He covers it all..  From head to toesies..

And yes, I am DeeNutsy!!  LOL!!!
