I posted this question on Mamyou's morning nutrition thread but no one has answered so maybe nobody saw it....?

Anyway, I'm having the morning food aversion (really, all day food aversion) problem, but am on Mepron. I saw on another forum that, in order for Mepron to be absorbed by the body, you have to take it with approximately 20 grams of fat per teaspoon of the medication (YUCK!!).

One woman posted that she would just drink the appropriate amount of oil with the Mepron....how revolting is that???!!??

I'm really in trouble here....I can barely stand to eat ANYTHING in the morning, much less food that's really fatty. I've been usually eating breakfast around noon, which delays taking meds because so many of my meds require me to eat first.

Has anyone else had this problem? How did you overcome it? Any suggestions or tips for me?

Oh my...I can't bear the thought of any kind of oil in my mouth....One of my friend's loves flaxseed oil...it makes me gag. Anyway, like trying to dose a cat or dog...see if you can hide the oil. But first, is a side effect of Mepron loss of appetite? If so, oh dear. If not, then consider adrenals and liver. My morning drink is getting a little easier to tolerate...some days I actually look forward to it. That is a combination of chocolate rice and shine, Udo's 3-6-9 blend--only about 1/2 teasoon, a couple teaspoons of FULL FAT plain organic yogourt, and about 4 ounces of almond milk...and an ice cube or two. There's your fat but I don't know how much.... You could also mix in a little organic unrefined coconut oil. It smells and tastes like coconuts and the drink will hide the oil part. I'm running low on the rice and shine and probably won't order any more but will look for a rice-based drink from another source, and probably chocolate or carob flavor. I have the same problem and when I start on doxy later in the week, I will be in your shoes...I just know it. Do what you have to do, so if it means taking the meds at noon when you can tolerate the food, then that's what you have to do. It'll get easier...it has to.

Thanks Mamyou....making some kind of smoothie with yogurt, almond milk and berries sounds like it might work for me. I do have coconut oil too since I cook with it a lot. Great suggestion! I can't think of things like this by myself because I have such a bad case of Lyme brain right now! :(

BTW, it does say this about Mepron side effects:

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

* easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
* fever, flu symptoms;
* white patches in your mouth or throat;
* worsening cough;
* bronchospasm (wheezing, chest tightness, trouble breathing);
* fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; or
* nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Less serious side effects may include:

* mild nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or upset,
* diarrhea, constipation;
* headache;
* weakness, dizziness;
* muscle pain;
* mild skin rash;
* sweating; or
* sleep problems (insomnia).

Sounds like it can affect the liver (dark urine, jaundice)!

Yeah - Mepron is rough on your liver and kidneys. I did a round this summer. I LOL'd when I saw it described as looking like yellow paint. And it's just about as tasty, hey?

I would try coconut milk - I'm drinking that now to kill the Artemesinin flavor when I take that - twice a week I was avoiding drinking or eating ANYTHING because it all tasted so bad. I make smoothies with coconut mil that would be good for the fat content too. You can add coconut oil to a smoothie as well.

How long are you on Mepron?

Also - I never heard 20g of fat per tsp of Mepron - that seems a bit high - I'd check with the pharmacist if it's too hard to do.

Hi Hippie Hiker Chick!

Thanks for the suggestion....I do have a lot of coconut milk in the house.

I got the "20 g of fat per tsp of Mepron" from the California Lyme Yahoo Group, then I Googled it. Yes, it does sound high, but the number came from one of the original studies done on Mepron where they had participants eat a breakfast containing 23 g of fat and then found that they absorbed twice as much Mepron with that high fat meal:

I don't know how long I'll be on Mepron....hopefully not much longer! :)
