Hello all...about 13 months ago a forward thinking rheumy told me he thought I had Lyme. He put me on 100 mgs doxy two times a day. Within a month I felt 90% better. I stayed on the doxy. But about three months ago--10 months in--it all came back and worse than ever! Now it's nastier than ever--more joints and more pain. I am still on the doxy. The doc said, "well maybe it wasn't Lyme after all...it may be ra!"
What do you all think? Sound like Lyme? Does doxy stop working after 10 months? Sounds like too long a timeframe for the herx thing....I would appreciate any feedback!

Hi Fibroprof,

I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like you were not prescribed a high enough dose of doxycycline. Also, if Lyme Disease isn't treated immediately it can be harder to get rid of.

You did not mention if you were tested for co-infections. If you were infected with other tick-borne disease at the same time, they need to be treated before the lyme disease can be dealt with.

Many times, when a person is on long-term antibiotics they need to be changed up to a different anti-biotic in order to continue the healing process.

It probably would be better for you to be under the care of a lyme literate doctor (called llmd's here). They will be able to effectively treat the lyme disease, address any co-infections and get you back to feeling the way you should.

Hope you feel better.

Hi Fibroprof,

achievinggrace is spot on.  I totally agree. Meds do need to be changed up for healing to continue.

I was on low dose Doxy same as you and it did not work for me.  I got better for a while then had a bad relapse-- was worse than ever!

I'm not a doctor-- but IMHO-- 10 months seems like an awfully long time to be on one med alone.  And Doxy does not work 100% for certain people. It sometimes is not absorbed properly and you can just level off on it and symtoms can come back.

Have you had your SED rate checked?  I think this is the test for RA ???   I think so...but I'm not 100% sure.

I would follow achievinggrace's advice and go see an LLMD.  This will get you on the right track for sure!

Lyme-- no coinfections-- never tested positive, diagnosed on symptoms. Had Lyme at least 1 year before treatment.

Meds: Doxy (2.5 months @ 200 mgs. per day) relapse after stopping. Amoxicillin (1.5 months @ 1000 mgs. per day) then Amoxicillin (1 month @ 3000 mgs. per day) Dr. added Azithromycin (250 mgs.) for another month. Now on Mepron (1500 mgs.) + Azithromycin (250 mgs.)
