Hi everyone!

I was just prescribed Samento and Banderol today. Can anyone tell me their experiences with these? I will be taking no other medications for lyme disease...no abx yet and no other herbals.

What do you think about the need to heavily detox with these too?

Thanks!

I was told to take one drop of the samento, then wait 15 minutes and take one drop of the banderol. This all has to be 45 and then 30 minutes before eating a meal. Then I'll repeat that one more time that day.

Then the next day I'll add one drop of each ...so 2 drops samento, wait 15 minutes, then 2 drops banderol. Repeat before dinner.

Then add 1 drop like that each day....up to 15 drops. So eventually, I could be up to 30 drops of each a day! They said if I got sick or started herxing, I should move back one drop until I'm tolerant of it again and stay at that level for a few days before trying to move up a drop again.

How do you even do 1/4 of a drop?!?! haha it seems kind of funny to me...not that their situation is funny, I just can't imagine being prescribed 1/4 of a drop and going crazy trying to divide a drop into 4 parts!!!

Thanks for sharing!

WWJD20: What effects did you have and when did you start to feel them? What kind of intensity?

Thanks!

I am using both the Cat's Claw (Samento) and Banderol. I use Milk Thistle, Parsley and Sarsparilla with it to help reduce toxins and to protect my liver.

They seem to have somewhat different effects. I read recently that it might be better to try one thing at a time and then wait three days in between the next thing. The Cat's Claw caused immediate joint pain from head to foot. That has gradually gotten better as the dose increased, but still have it.

The banderol seemed to cause massive bowel movements and my head is foggier than ever. I sincerely hope that means that bacteria are dying in my brain. Not so much joint pain with it.

WWJD20: Thank you for the input on your symptoms and for informing me of the search! I didn't even realize there was a search, so that's fantastic!
I have also been doing a TON of reading. On days when I felt helpless, I thought that if I was at least educating myself, I would be doing something...it worked out though, because that's how I first started to suspect that I had Lyme disease!

WisconsinGardener: Thank you as well for sharing your symptoms. I have used Milk Thistle in the past for liver function, so I'll have to ask my doc if it would be ok to start it up again.
I have heard that it is normally a good idea to wait three days in between starting new things as well. I had doctors instruct me in the past to do this when starting new meds, actually. Then if there are side effects, you know which med is probably causing them. However, my doctor yesterday instructed me to start taking Samento and Banderol together, since they prescribe them to work together in some way :)

It sounds to me like you are having some herx effects from both: I think it means you're getting better...keep at it and stay strong. Thank you for sharing and I will update you as I go along. I just took my first drop of both this morning!

I take really high doses of cat's claw (samento) and it helps, a lot. It does seem to give me the same kind of joint pain Wisconsin Gardener mentioned, but not all the time. My doctor originally gave it to me to break up biofilms, so that could be part of it. It also boosts your CD57 making your body fight the infection itself, so, that could also explain the symptoms.

Haven't taken banderol, though the combination seems to work really well together. Good luck!

My daughter is taking both Samento and Cumanda and Serrapeptase along with associated detox---burber, parsley, pinella, etc.  She is up to 30 drops of each/day and we go 12 1/2 days on, then 1 1/2 day off, then increase.  In other words, she did 1 drop of each per day, and built up to 10--then stayed there for the 12 1/2 days, then up to 20, etc.  She is about to go up to 40.  (This is NOT her entire protocol, btw!).

Anyway, wanted to share our thoughts about it.  So far, she is doing quite well.  She is up and around and doing better in a lot of ways.   We also had positive changes from her time at Hansa--so maybe this is a cumulative thing!  She was able to go to Calif alone to visit a friend for 10 days, has had great energy.  Still not where she needs to be, but these herbals really seem to be helping a lot without all of the side effects from the year of abx last year!!

Lingering issues are insomnia and pain--going to keep going up, up, up on the drops!  I think she may top out at 60??, then will rotate to other herbals as needed.

I have been impressed with the protocol!  Of course, she is not on Banderol, but Cumanda.  Not sure why, but her protocol is individualized for her.

Hope this helps!!

I have used samento & banderol with great success. I switched samento for cat's claw though, as it is much cheaper and seems to be virtually the same. I take 30 drops of samento and one pill of cat's claw, usually just once a day. When I was taking these twice a day, it really pulled me out of my sickness and now I just take it as a maintenance dose. I feel like these herbs could help many (most?) people, either by themselves or in combo with other things.

I started Banderol and Samento as per the Cowden Protocol a month ago. I started at one drop of each 4x a day before meals and worked up to 30 drops. After 15 drops I had a two day herx with a nice Bartonella rash at the end. I continued on gradually to 30 drops and felt amazing. I was back running and felt 100% again... until a week later I had another intense herx (panic attacks, diarrhea, anxiety, skin rashes). I had to stop taking the herbs for a few days, but plan to continue on a lower dose and work my way up more gradually. They are powerful herbs!

I've been taking 30 drops a day (usually just once) for maintenance.
I am 80% symptom free, but whenever I stop the meds, my symptoms seem to slowly come back.

Yesterday I did 50 drops each, today I'm doing 60. No "herx" reaction yet except a little bit of tiredness. We'll see how I'm feeling tomorrow. Disclaimer: do not try this at home, kids. smilewinkgrin For real -- if you're real sick and haven't been doing fine on 30 drops for a while, I can't recommend doing something like this.

I'm glad that works for you. I've tried that, but I generally start to feel unwell after 3-4 days, and I start them again. :(

So, an update.
I didn't have any huge reaction to 60 drops yesterday or today, but I am feeling noticeably better!
Also, the swolen lymph nodes behind my ears have shrunk.

I hope this makes a lasting effect. This stuff can get expensive. I know, not in comparison to some doctors and medicines without insurance -- but it's still about 200 a month on a full dosage.

After a month of this, I will stop the medication and see how I'm feeling.

Just wanted to chime in here again!  Caity is up to 5o drops each of Samento and Cumanda and today will switch the Cumanda for Banderol--starting at one drop.  She will remain on 50 drops of Samento while working up on the Banderol.  She is doing better than she has in a long time.  Still not "well", but holding down a part time job and beginning to get involved in life again!  Praising God here!!  :-)

Just an update to my post above. I do believe I had a herx reaction. Either that, or I got the flu around the same time. :o
lyme w/ possible co-infections since ~april 2011.
abx didn't help enough.
successfully treating with enzymes, samento/banderol, and a few others.
~90% back to normal after a few months.

Hi Jen -
Dr. Eva Sapi at University of New Haven Medical School has found that these two herbs together are far more effective than doxy...I take 20 drops of each on empty stomach 15 minutes apart...Dr. Cowden insists putting the drops in 1/2 cup of water for one minute 30 minutes before eating or 2 hours after. You can read all about it at www.neuro-lyme.com/videoblog on the Biofilm page. Dr. Marty Ross has been experimenting with patients for quite some time and recommends 8 months of treatment - starting with one drop and going up by a drop every other day until herxing then wait until herx is over before increasing more (stay at same dose through herx) I find Smilax really helps bind the neurotoxins)

I have been VERY sick for a long, long time and have found this protocol to be a turning point for me. A friend suggested pulsing the doses...but I don't think you need to pulse more than 4 - 5 days...but I always herx when I start back - usually just one day (it was more severe at the beginning.)

Best wishes!

re: Samento and Banderol, I have been taking them about a month twice a day and I recently noticed my stools are no longer well formed and some gastro-intestinal upset. Do these herbs caused the same kind of gastro problems that regular antibiotics do? I have made the mistake on occasion of forgetting to take them on an empty stomach which may be compounding the problem. Anyone have any thoughts about whether these 2 herbs are also killing the good bacteria. I am taking 4 Dr. Ohira's probiotics a day.
