I have had Lyme and Bartonella for almost a year now and have been treating it for 4.5 months. Most of my symptoms are resolving over time with the exception of acne. I am in search for information in regards to the skin manifestations of Bartonella. I have mild-moderate acne on my face and have had it since the beginning of my illness which is pretty much the only symptom that I have had that has pointed to Bartonella. This has made diagnosis difficult. Before Lyme I never had acne.

What I have found in my research is that skin manifestations of Bartonella are more obvious (rashes, streaks, etc.) than acne on the face, therefore I am lead to believe that the acne stems from toxins or some other source.

Is it more likely that mild-moderate acne indicates Bartonella or some other issue related to the Lyme?

Hi BlakeAlexander -

Weird that you mention the acne, as my face has erupted for a couple of weeks now, for some strange reason. I'm thinking my case is a biofilm surge + heat + humidity + dairy.

- I ran out of the binder I usually take so had some charcoal handy after not being on it for a couple weeks.
- No more dairy
- I resumed an anti-biofilm herb I'd stopped taking a few months prior
- I also kept things a little cooler around the house
- And I started washing my face a few times a day (which can actually aggravate typical acne but I use a specially-formulated cleanser that has some anti-biofilm/fungal properties and this really helps). The products I use are by Ovante and can be found at www.skinimprovements.com and my skin has NEVER looked or felt better... I wish I didn't have to buy expensive products but I do - the ingredients are all natural and I just love the stuff (let me know if you're interested in the products I use)

Anyway, I'm making progress.

While I don't think acne is related directly to bart or Lyme, it is more of a sx of the following, which can develop due to the tick-born infections or due to treatment:

Acne is GENERALLY a detox issue so that's one place to start - try increasing your detox with sweating, full-body soaks.

Acne is also a gut bacteria issue, given the gut-brain connection. I would start with focusing on gut health and a clean diet but particularly necessary is adding in/increasing binders. HCL can sometimes help combat bacterial overgrowth in the gut which can cause acne.

And for me, the biofilm clogs pores or stirs up bacteria - I'm really not sure but I think it's part of the issue. Some yeast/fungal overgrowth that can grow on your face (sometimes from a digestive-originating overgrowth) isn't really classic acne but is a fungal rash. So that's something to also consider.

Hope that's helpful -

-p

Blake - acne is listed as a bartonella symptom. 4 1/2 months isn't really long for treating bart.

It can take longer than that.

Since you have had good results...I would stick it out awhile longer.

Here's one list where I found acne under Bart:

I never had acne until I started treatment and detoxing. Could be detoxing. I get lots of zits on my face and oddly, on my shoulders. All over my shoulders. Got a few big ones on my back too. I figure it's just detoxing. Sadly, I seem to be detoxing out of my skin! They're all big, unpoppable zits that seem deep down. Always had perfect skin before. Lyme is really taking a toll on my skin.

I never had acne until I started the Wahl's Paleo diet. Terry Wahls mentions in her book that a lot of people who start to eat a ton of fruits and veggies start detoxing much better and thus begin to show acne, so it very well could be a detox thing, even if your diet hasn't changed... maybe you're detoxing toxins or something.

I too have gotten crazy breakouts on my shoulders since I started treating.

My face hasn't had breakout problems but in just a couple of months developed huge brown spots, looks awful and wondering if they'll go away or if I'll be adding dermatologist to my list of Dr's for a wintertime vanity check.
