I started minocycline two nights ago and woke up with very slight dizziness but nothing major and was able to go about my day. So I took it the next night (last night) (only taking 100mg per day working my way up to twice daily) and woke up today with a throbbing headache. Mostly in the back of my head but it is so bad I can barely write this or concentrate on anything.

My LLMD said that if I get a headache I should discontinue because it can cause swelling in the brain and that can be dangerous. But, I think it could be a herx from the mino, right? I don't want to discontinue if it is going to help eventually.

Has anyone experienced this type of headache when starting mino?

Thanks!!

Hi NicHostetler -

Sorry about the headache - those are no fun.

I have developed headaches so often throughout my life, I have finally determined cause and effect - I'll include below the following about the Minocycline:

I agree w/ your LLMD - headaches can cause inflammation in the brain, which is one symptom of a herx. There are different theories

- Mino crosses the bbb so is it killing bacteria in the brain that produces toxins you aren't able to detox quickly enough? Is this process also producing the inflammatory response?

- Is the Mino creating dysbiosis in the GI since it also kills the good bacteria, which help keep opportunistic pathogens like yeast/fungus in check. Yeast/fungus can give off ethanol and other neurotoxins. Due to the gut-brain connections via blood vessels (the primary reason why gut issues can cause problems in the head), these neurotoxins in the gut can reach the brain if not detoxed properly.

- Are you not able to detox quickly enough because it's too much abx too fast? Or does your body not detox well due to MTHFR DNA mutations or just an overloaded system? Do you need to stop for a couple days to allow your body to process the toxins appropriately or can you simply kick up your detox a notch or two?

What I would try first is increase detoxing - definitely add Nutramedix Pinella and Burbur tinctures. Also, I'd add a GI binder - several discussions about binders today so look for threads. Additionally, you might have some success with an anti-inflammatory component to your protocols (try japanense knotweed or turmeric).

*******

Here is more info on headaches:

Over the years I have been able to determine what kind of headache I have and pinpoint MOST of their causes. Takes awhile.

Generally - they are caused by:

tension
dehydration
lack of caffeine
heat overload
yeast/fungal overgrowth/die off
toxin overload

So I would do the following to cover your bases:

- Start rehydrating ASAP - water only.

- Try caffeine pills or concentrated tea - the caffeine can help dilate the blood vessels so there is less pressure. Coffee or other caffeinated drinks probably aren't the best to drink in case you're dehydrated.

- Detox the gut with a binder (remember the time buffers) and continue to rehydrate. Also try a soak. Coffee enema is good for detoxing but not because it's coffee - so it won't address a headache like drinking caffeine would - the caffeine doesn't work that way with an enema.

- Yeast/fungal overgrowth AND the die off after you start on antifungals can cause off-gassing including ethanol and other toxins. So antifungals are helpful and so is increasing detoxing (particularly binders!) while you're on them can help reduce the toxins.

- I usually take a brain detox herb or combo - I like Nutrimedix Pinella and Burbur (I double the dose on headache days)

- And I cool off with a cool shower if my headache is heat-induced, particularly letting the cold run on my scalp. Cold compresses help, too if you're not up for a cold shower.

Hope that helps - let us know how you improve -

-p

I didn't get a headache when I started mino - but I did get some dizziness...for about a week or two...sorry I can't remember how long lasted.

Mino can cause the intracranial hypertension - which could be damaging to the eyes. It should resolve on cessation.

But, because it has such good blood/brain barrier penetration and can also causes some benign 'head' symptoms - particularly when you first start it - how is someone to know?

So you can discontinue for a few days...once headache resolves, try again...but discuss this with your LLMD.
If you do go back on - maybe do 100 mg every three days for a couple weeks...then 100 mg every two days...etc. Ease yourself into the full dose.

...or you can change antibiotics...

I know it's very difficult to feel all these symptoms and not worry...I would google the antibiotic and freak out over what could happen...and very difficult to distinguish sometimes between herx/side effects/allergies.

i was only able to cope with 300mg for 4-5 days until i got very sick from the side effects

had to lower it to 200 then upped to 300 for a short time, then down again .... 300 daily continously was too much for me and side effects were too serious. tell your LLMD about these effects, probably will recommend lowering the dosage.

i think u should ramp up slowly and if u feel very sick u should back down. as Girlie pointed out, mino has side effects that should not be ignored.

So the damage done to eyes is reversible when stopping the minocycline? My headache seems to be a little better now, but still there, plus brain fog and "dizziness" although its not room spinning, just kinda off balance/out of it feeling.

I don't know if it gets to the point where it damages the eye - if that is reversible...you would want to stop it before it does that.

So here are articles - where it's called benign hypertension - and symptoms did resolve on cessation
