Hi
For the past 5 months I've been dealing with headaches. First I started to get them when I felt uptight. The uptight feeling seemed to go up one side of my face and reside on the top right side of my head. Then it went to the left side on the top where it felt like pressure in a small area. Sometimes Migraine excedrin worked, sometimes imitrex. I also started getting a headache with pain in the back of my left ear below it that would go up the left side of my head , with the pressure pain on the top on the left and then it would go to my forehead over my left eye. Now lately I remember having the last description off and on since I was a teen (Im 25) but it never last long.
Lately Ive been having that headache and slight pressure on my head, mainly the bottom of the back of my head the top and the sides near my temples. When I lay down sometimes I get pressure in my sinus area or head so I sleep on two pillows. I've been having some burning pains off and on , I've told the neuro he didn't seem to think much of it. Also everytime I swallow I hear a pop in my ears. I've also had throbbing in the lower back of my head, neck, and between my upper back when I lay down I feel it. My primary care doctor and psychologist thinks it is from the tension. I have a lot of tension in my upper shoulders , and clench my teeth and raise my shoulders a lot.

I had a CT done in Jan and it came back negative. I had an EEG done at the beginning of this month and my brain was normal and it showed I was having a lot of muscle spasms. I've seen the neuro three times. He tells me it isn't my brain. He diagnosed me with a cervical neck strain, and headaches. He is giving me Soma, fiorinal with codeine, and mobic.
The fiorinal worked well for awhile but then for some reason it stopped working. I was thinking maybe my headache is cause by muscle spasms or neck pain. I told my doctor I have bad bad posture on the computer and played on it everyday for at least 6 months. I had dry eyes , allergies in the eye , floaters and say an eye doctor who did an exam and confirmed that. But he didn't see anything wrong.

Then I started seeing flashes off and on for the past 3 or 4 months. First I thought it was after thought images, but now not so sure. I see them at the tops of the corner of my eyes sometimes. They don't seem to go before or with my headaches. So I don't know. I'm also nearsighted.

Most of my doctors think I have a lot of anxiety and worry too much. Two have said I have depression including my psychologist. My reg doctor is taking me off all of the neuro's meds except the mobic, and is giving me prozac, trazodone, mobic, xanax, and atenolol ( I have MVP and I started taking it to stop having so many palpatations. It's a low dose. Ive been checked out my the cardiologist with a echo and treadmill and EKGs, and he thinks my heart rate being 120 is from anxiety. my bp has been up 130/80 to 100/80 depending on how anxious I am I hope.)

Anyways I see my reg doctor monday to see my progress, and see my neuro march 10th and will have an EMG test done that day as well. See I've also had some weakness off and on in my left hand and legs, but I can still move everything, sometimes tingling or falling asleep. Its hard to walk sometimes on my left foot. I did sprain it last sept, but that was just my toe.

I know no one can diagnose me, but at least the headaches , migraine? Tension? Im really confused about these doctors and medications...

p.s. I went through a period of great stress in Aug 2007 when my mom was in the hospital for depression and she has ms. The doctors were puzzled, she was having hallucinations and derailment of thought. It was very tragic to me and I had to take on a lot of responsiblites and stay home with her and help her when she got out. a month after she got out , all these things started happening.

Hi, to me your headaches sound like tension, considering you have pain in your shoulders and back. Not sure about all the other symptoms though. Sorry I dont have more info.

Hi,

Welcome to Healing Well. Sorry to hear you are having a tough time of it. I am not a Doc but it does sound like tension headaches - there maybe some migraine biology in there too not sure!

Just a note of warning about any meds that contain 'codeine' or any other 'narcotic'. Do your best to avoid these as they can worsen the headaches over time. If you have to resort to these do not take for more than 2 days at a time in any one week!

Please let me know how you get on with your Neuro in March.

take care

Hello Ihateheadaches,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having so much trouble.  I'm sure your neurologist has probably asked you this, but have you ever had any head or neck injuries (even if it was a long time ago when you were just a kid)?

Best wishes,
~Liz

Well I had a birth injury. It was a forcep birth that lead to my left eye having horner's syndrome, and temporary paralysis on the left side of my face.

Anyhow I saw him yesterday and he thinks my main problems and anxiety and depression along with cervical strain, occiputal neuritius, and muscle spasms. He doesn't think there are anything wrong with my spine or nerves...So I dont know.

ugh this is fustrating.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through so much right now. My neurologist has all of her migraine patients do some sort of relaxation activity each day, for at least 30 minutes to help with headaches/migraines brought on by anxiety, tension, and stress. This suggestion may sound too small to help in the grand scheme of things, but have you tried incorporating meditation, deep breathing exercises, massage, yoga, or anything like that into your day to try and help ease some of the anxiety and tension?

~Sarah
