I just started taking Topamax yesterday - 25 mg once a day for the first 7 days.  I took my second pill this morning. I have had kind of a high feeling since about a half hour after taking it and feel slightly out of it.  Does anybody know what I am talking about? It's not really a bad feeling just kind of strange especially after only taking two doses of 25 mg. I have been given it for migraine prevention and have read all about the numerous side effects but nobody said anything about feeling this way - unless that is part of the "DOPAMAX" side effect. Can't start that soon, can it??

The side effect of the med. starts right away. Everytime you up it, you will get all the side effects.

for me, the "high" side effect lasted only the first 2 weeks, then i felt normal again. The only symptoms that lasted the whole time was the tingling in my toes and fingers and soda tasting awful. But the side effects started instantly with that medicine! So maybe wait a couple weeks to see if it does happen to fade away for you...

I took Topamax 400mg daily and I only had that "off" feeling (I wouldn't describe mine as high, exactly) when I would increase my dosage or if I stopped completely and started over (when I lost insurance and had to quit taking Topamax altogether)

FOR ME, the "Dopamax" thing came from an overall "fog" as well as "losing words" where I would be in the middle of a sentence and be completely unable to come up with words like 'ambulance' or 'garage' It was weird, but FOR ME, Topamax Helped me tons and I would not have quit taking it just because of the side effects I experienced.

I would suggest to give it a little time but if anything really weird happens call your doctor!

Thanks for your replies.  That feeling went away after the first few days. It was a strange feeling. I have had a tiny bit of tingling in my toes and beer and soda taste horrible - other than that I am not having any other side effects so far.  I am just starting today the 50 mg at night and 25 in the morning - I still have a little ways to go but not much. I am hoping that the appetite will decrease soon - not sure if it will on such a low dose. The main thing is if it keeps my headaches at bay I will be happy.

Oh forgot to mention - I am having the memory issues already - I guess that's why I forgot to mention it in my last post a few minutes ago. :-)

Hey Guys... I am new to this, but it helps knowing people are going through the same thing I am. I have had migraines (intractable) since I was 16. I am 41 now. I have been on Topamax for 3 years. I believe it helps, but I definitely experience loss of memory from it. I was the Vice President of a company for 8 years and resigned the end of last year... The stress and pain along with trying to keep up with it all was too much. I am actually not sure who I am anymore. I'm not sure the Topamax is/was worth it to me... But I don't know that I would have been able to function without it anyway. I wish you luck, but would advise you keep close tabs on the side effects, or ask your friends / family to tell you if you seem to be "out" of it more than usual (especially at work).

Yes that is a side effect. I am well familar more than a lot ppl on topax, as I was apart of the double blind study for it. And I had the real placebo...I knew it was real within a few months. I knew it cuz I went from my 18 migraines a month to 3-4! Usually after a couple months sideeffects go away. However, if too bothersome please contact your pcp.

I took Topamax for about a year slowly increasing the dosage as the doctor recommended.  When I started taking 100 mg a day, I felt out of it, quickly lost my train of thought and just felt like a zombee at times.  I went off it.  It got to the point that I was still getting migraines so the doctor recommended going up on the mg again.  I said no way b/c of the way I was feeling already.  I decidedto deal with the migraines.  As a side note, my migraines started coming more frequently in 2005.  The doc thought it might be my birth control pills so she had me to go off the pill.  When my migraines did not go away, the doc ruled the "pill" as not being the cause.  So...the doc told me that I could go back on the pill after my next period.  Well, 9 months passed and my period never started back and my breast started leaking milk.....from all signs it appeared that I was pregnant.  My OBGYN gave me a pill to jump start my period which didn't work either.  When it didn't work, she sent me for an MRI.  Come to find out, I had a pitutary tumor called a microadenoma.  She referred me to a Endocronologist who I now see every three months to test my prolactin levels.  They perform an MRI annually to see if the tumor is shrinking.  Anyway, I know I got off of your question about Topamax but thought I would mention what else was going on with me.  The endocronolist says that the migraines may be intensified b/c of the microadenoma.  Thank the Lord this can be treated with medication but as all medications, it has side effects too - weight gain, dizziness, headaches......

I also got all the horrible side effects of topamax. I had the tingling and the word loss and lack of comprehension. I have grown to call it the STUPIDS. I called my doc and he told me to cut the dose from 100mg to 75mgs unfortunately he prescibed the 100 mg tablets so nothing I can do until my refill time. I have not gotten over the word loss and comprehension problems reflected in writing this it took me 20 mins. I am slowly geting sick of it though because ot is causing problems with my ability to work properly. I am a customer svc rep and customers are not to fond of having to wait a min for me to remember what word I am trying to say. I am ony hoping for one of the side effects to kick in the weight loss. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I have been taking 100mg a day for a few weeks now and it is working pretty well. I haven't had really bad side effects from it. Feet tingle in the morning for a few minutes, some word loss but not very often, unfortunately no weight loss yet. One complaint is that I can't have a single beer because it tastes HORRIBLE and it feels like acid going down my throat it burns so bad - soda burns also but not half as bad. Cuts down on a few calories on the weekends!
My migranes are gone but I have been getting this stabbing pain above my right eye lately - makes me think I am going to have a stroke or pass out or something. I believe this is totally different and seperate from my migraines - I have a doctors appt on Friday for this and some other issues that are going on to figure out what the heck is wrong - lupus, lymes, arthritis, etc.. Wish me luck! I know it isn't "in my head" so to speak. tongue   Isn't it funny how doctors dismiss it as psychological when they don't know what's wrong and can't admit that maybe they don't know everything??

  Good Morning Everyone,

I don't usually post on this website since I am Epileptic but I tried Topamax when it first came out for my seizures and the only side effect I had was the very rare one of kidney stones! My Neurologist has me on Lyrica now which helps my seizures and I believe it has also helped my Migraines because I used to have them everyday sometimes for 6 days and now I usually only have them when I have Grand MALS. So you might try this medication instead of the Topamax if the side effects are too bad. I am on A very low dose, 100 mg.

I'm on birth control pills and I shouldn't be bleeding out of cycle.. and I am.. last week AND this week.. it's not much.. but it's there.. and it is rather annoying.. anyone know how long this is supposed to last? Any thoughts?
