Since I've began the Topamax my migraines have been so much better but now I'm having kidney stones. they are not really big, not cause obstruction. they are "sand like" but they hurt like H**. The Docs. say "Migraines hurt, but won't kill you and kidney stones hurt and the damage they cause can kill you." I guess I won't be able to take it. I just hate to stop it when its helped so much. Also, I feel like I've lost my mental "sharpness" since i've started taking my prevent. meds.
Just wondering if anyone else has had Kindey Stones from the Topamax

Yes, I'm in the same situation. My stones were painful enough to send me to a urologist (after the ER and CT scans figured out what they were). He happens to be doing a research study with my neurologist on kidney stone formation caused by Topamax (what are the odds!!). He doesn't think I'll have to go off Topamax, at least not yet. He sent off urine samples and tested stone samples and found out what exact chemical imbalance was causing the stone formation, and now he's treating it by mineral supplements (in my case, pottasium citrate). I think this will require blood and urine testing every few months, at least at first, to make sure the chemical balance is just right with no side effects, but the benefits of Topamax make it well worth it for me. If I were suffering from lots of the other cognitive side effects I read about, or weren't getting much headache relief, I'd never risk another kidney stone episode -- some of the worst pain I've ever suffered.

You don't say if your doc is a urologist, but if not, that may be what you need here. If so, maybe you need a more creative one. I think I really lucked into a particularly good doctor in my urologist -- he's really nice, explains what he's doing and why, answers questions, treats me with respect -- hard to believe he's really an MD!!

I was on Dopamax Topamax for about eight months.  I got up to a dosage of 400mg per day, with no relief of my migraines, but plenty of temporary brain damage problems. tongue   My memory went kaput, I couldn't finish a sentence, etc..., so I finally bailed, even though other people were getting help from this med.

Anyway, there are two key things to remember if you are taking Topamax and it is working for you - 1) Drink plenty of beverages, especially water, continuously every day.  Keep the plumbing constantly in use.  2) Avoid calcium rich foods and suppliments in excess, the major component of a kidney stone is Calcium.

I have kidneys known for making boulders, not stones.  A couple of years ago I had one that was so huge, it got impacted and had to be surgically removed.  No ultrasound blasting for me, I got the full Roto-Router method.  I wouldn't wish that on anyone.  Apparently, it is actually more painful than giving birth (I'm spawn free so I'm taking this on advise from others.)

Let me know how things work out for you.
