Sometime in November it was raining and I was driving. My tires skid into a puddle of water and I crashed into a pole. As I ran into the pole I felt my head and neck moved back and forth with great force. After the accident I felt fine. A couple of days later I had a minor cold. I had drippy nose and I coughed a lot. I coughed for several days and took medicine for the cold. One day I took medicine and went to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling nauseated and coughed a lot. I threw up so much that I threw up blood. I was scared and my stomach hurt a lot. I went to the Dr. and told him what happened and he sent me to have a test done over my stomach. I went back with my Dr. after I had my test done and he said I had acid reflux. He told me it was minor. He gave me pills for that.

After a week I felt normal again. My cold was gone. Around two days later I had the worst migraine ever. My migraine lasted all day. I took Tylenol and it helped a little. I also put ice on my head. After a couple days I started getting throbbing headaches. It was less painful then the migraine I had. My headaches hurt so much that the front of my head felt tingly and became numb in times. With my headaches I also felt a strong pressure on my chest. I felt like it was difficult to breathe. The pressure would go and come back in times whether I was at home, at school, driving, etc. My mom mentioned it was heartburn. While I felt this I would drive my car. For a couple of days I thought my car had a burning smell. I thought I smelt gas or something similar to it. While I was driving I felt like it was difficult to breath and my heart was beating really fast. I thought I was going to have a stroke. At times my hands became numb. I opened the windows but that didn’t help. A couple of times I stopped driving when I was on the road and parked somewhere because I ran out of breath and could not concentrate on the road. At times I also burped a lot and had a strange taste in my mouth. It tasted like gas. When I burped I tasted it and smelt it coming out from my mouth. I told my parents and they drove my car for a week. They told me they felt and did not smell anything. They said the car was fine. I drove my car again and felt the same thing. One day I was at home and felt like I could not breathe. My parents took me to the clinic. The doctor and nurse checked my oxygen level and blood pressure. It looked normal. They also took an x-ray of my chest and an EKG. It all came back normal. I told the Dr. about the taste and smell of gas I had coming out of my mouth. I told them that I thought it might be carbon monoxide. He decided to do a blood test to see if it was a possibility. A week passed by and I got a call and my blood test came back normal. All I had was low potassium, but this was not anything major. I kept having the same symptoms. More weeks passed by.

I went to rent a movie one day with my boyfriend. Inside the store I felt out of breath. My hands started tingling, so we decided to leave. When we got in the car I felt lightheaded and out of breath, like someone was pressing hard against my chest. Beside my hands feeling tingly, I also felt my face, chest, and legs feeling tingly. It also felt like my veins and the inside of my body was cold. My boyfriend told me I looked very pale. I felt like I was going to pass out. So I told my boyfriend to take me to a different clinic then the one I went to last time. When I got there, once again, they checked my oxygen level and blood pressure and it all came back normal. They also did another x-ray of my chest and an EKG. These tests also came back normal. The Dr. told me what I had were panic attacks. He gave me medicine for my panic attacks. A couple weeks have passed by and I felt better. I learned to control my attacks. The Dr. said I had a lot of stress, even though I did not feel it. I told him I have a calm life. After the Dr. told me this, I dropped two classes out of four from college.

I felt a little better until I freaked out. My boyfriend and I were at my house getting read to eat Chinese food at a restaurant. I had a bad headache and I felt my chest pressing again. The inside of my chest felt cold. All at once I felt like a lot of tiny needles from the top of my head falling down until I felt the inside of my head completely empty and numb. I was so scared I thought my skull or brain was going to fall. My boyfriend calmed me down. From then my head has been numb.  It is just the inside of my head.

One day I went to stay with my sister at her home. I began to have a headache so I went to bed. I tried to sleep but my headache got worse that it woke me up when I was barely falling asleep. I felt like pins and needles were scratching and cutting the inside of my head, esp. on the back of my eyes. I could not stand the pain. My sister took me to the emergency room. I waited about 6 hours and the pain was unbearable. I never cried so much in my life. When I saw a Dr. he put an IV on me because he said I looked dehydrated. He gave me pills for the pain and I went home. I took them and they sort of helped.

A couple days later, I felt pain around my eyes, cheeks, ears, and nose. I also felt like something cold was dripping from the inside my head. My mom thought it was mucus. She thought it could be a sinus infection. So I put on nose spray for about two weeks. The headaches got worse that I could not sleep at night. I decided to go back to the clinic and the Dr. gave me sleeping pills, Vicotin for  the pain and he decided to give me a CAT Scan to see if I had a sinus infection. I got blood drawn out to see if my thyroid was normal, to check my blood count, and for other tests. I took the pills and I felt less pain. I could sleep now at night. In about a week, I went back to the Dr. and he told me my CAT scan was normal. I told him I still have pain. I told him I felt like I had something thick and sharp, needlelike sensation, poking the back of my eyes and cheeks. It felt like something was pulling my eyes out. It was like wires were wrapped around my eyes. The Dr. told me he was going to do an MRI. I went to have my MRI done and I did not get my results until two weeks later. During one of those weeks, I went to vacation with my family. When we got there my head started to hurt horribly, painfully bad. I felt that I had something falling from the top of my head. It felt like many sharp pins and needles, at once, were falling and piercing and cutting all the way through the inside of my eyes, nose, the sides of my ears and my tongue. When I felt this, it also had a burning sensation. It felt like the inside of my head was on fire. I had this feeling all day and all night. The pain was so bad I was shaking and could not stop crying. The next day in Mexico I decided to go see a neurologist. He told me based on my symptoms that it sounds like it could be epilepsy with a complicated migraine. He sent me to the hospital to do an MRI and to have an EEG. I did these tests and went back to him. He told me everything came back normal. I told him I felt the inside of my head completely empty and numb, like there was just a hole inside my head. My head felt wobbly. I also felt like a lot of tiny needles were falling down from the top of my head. When this happened I felt the needles or whatever sensation it is giving me shocks or static, or electricity. I felt the shocks inside my head and also at the bottom of my feet. It felt so weird and painful. The Dr. told me, once again, based on my symptoms that the closet thing I could have is epilepsy. He thought I might get seizures. He gave me medicine. He gave me Topomax and Keppra for epilepsy and some medicine for the pain.

When I got back to USA I went to the clinic for my MRI results. The Dr. told me my results came back normal. He told me to not take anymore of the medicine I was given in Mexico because I do not have epilepsy. He said this medicine was not necessary and it could ruin my digestive system. He sent me to have a urine test and I had a minor infection. He gave me pills for that. He also gave me floxentine pills. He thought that everything I had was caused by stress, but I believe its something else besides stress. He said he was going to fax some papers so that I could see a neurologist and have an EEG done. I still have not seen a neurologist nor have my EEG done yet. But I should soon.

I only took the pills the Dr. gave me for a couple of days because my stomach hurt a lot. I also lost my appetite. I hardly ate food. I also could not sleep during those days. I went back to the Dr. and he told me to stop taking all the medicine I was given. He gave me Nexium pills for my stomach. He told me not to take any other pills except Tylenol or Ibuprofen for my headaches. He also draws blood to see if I had any stomach problems. I started taking my pills and my stomach felt better and I could sleep at night now. Since then until now I have felt different sensations inside my head, but being completely numb and empty. My head has felt completely numb for around two months. One day I felt like there were wires inside my head. I felt like there were pins and needles, I felt like my head was on fire. I felt like I had air or my head was cold inside. I had a sensation like wires were pulling my skull or my head out of my head. I had a sensation like water falling from the top of my head. It felt cold. I also had itching and tingly sensations inside my head. Almost everyday I have different sensations inside my head. Some days I would have ringing in my ears and my vision would see white spots for just a second.

Recently, my head feels like the numb sensation I mentioned. I am sometime still feeling like the sensation that something is falling from the inside of my head, sometimes a cold sensation. This sensation I have also felt in my neck and now I also feel my neck empty or numb. With this my neck hurts a lot. It feels like my head is heavy and wobbly and makes my neck and shoulder hurt. I also feel like my body feels heavy, like it is tired. But I can move my body well, function well; see well, do all the normal stuff. I never had a fever either.

HELP. I would just like to know what I have and how can i get cured or fix it?

Hi undiagnosed,

Welcome to Healing Well. So sorry to hear that you have gone through all this!!! I am also sorry to tell you that we are just sufferers here, and we cannot diagnose as we have no medical expertise. We can only offer our own experiences and opinions and what we have learned ourselves!!

However, we will do our best to support you, and you have now found a place where you can come to share what you are going through with people that understand!!!

My opinion, for what it's worth is that you have been experiencing some Panic Attacks along with Migraine and possibly some nerve damage from your accident - purely my personal speculation you understand!!!!

Panic Attacks can be managed quite well, but I am afraid there is no cure for Migraine but there are many treatments out there that can make life much easier, it is just a case of finding the one that works for you!!!! Sadly that takes time!!! Please don't be afraid to ask questions, the only daft one is the one you didn't ask lol!!!

I really hope that your Neuro can find something that works well for you soon, take care

I'm so sorry you're going through this!  I've learned in the past 6 months what it's like to keep going to doctors to try to find out what's wrong, and none of them can tell me.  My symptoms weren't exactly like yours, but I described it as my head being a balloon, and it felt like someone was blowing it up and it kept getting bigger & bigger.  I had the pins & needles thing in my face & head, and the head pain kept moving from place to place.  (My neurologist said that a headache stays in one place, it won't move around. Tell that to my head!) After 4 months of searching the internet & going to doctors, I diagnosed myself, courtesy of members of this board, with occipital neuralgia.  The occipital nerve is at the base of the skull & moves into the head.  I'm not saying that this is your problem, but I agree with Annuk that it could very well be a nerve problem.  From what I understand, this does not show up on an MRI or CT scan.

I hope you find an answer soon - just know that you're not alone in this quest for relief!

I'm relieved that someone can understand what i am going through. I get frustated when I go to the Dr's and I try to explain to them that my head feels completely empty or numb and they say "oh your head feels foggy, its the medicine it will go away soon. but its not the medicine bc i have not been taking any for a couple months and i feel the same way or little worse.
I feel like Nancy mentioned, like my head being a balloon with no sensation inside. I have that same sensation to the bottom of my neck. When I walk around My head and neck feels like it is floating with a couple of strings attached to it. Slowly the strings have a sensation that they are falling and i feel more empty and the strings come back in different places. My neck and shoulders get really tense and they start to hurt. It is the weirdest thing, it is so hard to explain. I'm thinking about doing acupuncture, i dont know if that would help.

Hi MedallioN,

Welcome to Healing Well. Sounds like you are having it tough too!!! You say you have a lump on the back of your head? You are probably right!!! Please tell me more about your headaches, how often do you get them? How long do they last? What do they feel like? Are they in one specific place in your head, if so where?

Sorry for all the questions, I am just trying to understand what makes up these 'horrible headaches'!!!! You are probably right that the thyroid problem is separate to your headache problem, but it may be good to keep an open mind about it!!!

undiagnosed - I think you need to keep going back to the Doctors until they listen to you!!!!! Please try and get yourself to a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist, this is the only way you can hope to be understood!!!! I don't know if accupuncture will help, but what ever helps you to relax would be good in the meantime!!!!

take care

Dear undiagnosed,

Wondered if you were still having the headaches? Did you have x-rays on your cervical spine? Have you had studies done on your pituitary gland? Some of your symptoms sounded like pituitary problems. Watery nasal drainage, trouble with electrolytes and thyroid, weakness, feeling empty-headed. The pituitary may look OK, but the function might not be right. Have you seen an endocrinologist?

It doesn't take much to stress the pituitary gland. It is a tiny gland, very sensitive to lack of oxygen.

Panhypopituitarism or hypopituitarism can occur as a result of an injury to the "pituitary stalk". This can happen with severe blood loss, such as hemmorhaging after a birth or miscarriage, or an injury such as a car accident. if the pituitary gland quits working, the symptoms are usually slow and insidious, but can be dramatic. Symptoms include fatigue, feeling cold and weakness, weight loss or weight gain, appetite changes and stomach pain, blood pressure changes, and headache and visual disturbances.

one of the ways and endocrinologist can check for this is to test for IGF-1, Somatotropin (also called growth hormone.) the Dr can give you a growth hormone "challenge" by giving you an IV of Arginine, which stimulate the anterior pituitary to produce growth hormone. He/she can then do blood tests to see if it is working. Often, if people are really low on growth hormone, just the IV will invigorate them. There are other tests that can be done, all mostly done by endocrinologists.

Anyway, if you are still having problems, maybe ask your Dr. what he/she thinks about testing the pituitary functions?

I'm not a Dr., just know a little about pituitary problems. i remember some similar symptoms to what you are describing. I was so tired I couldn't work. I had a car accident with a whiplash, then had a miscarriage with a hemorrhagic blood loss. It took 3 years before I knew something was really wrong, and another 5 before I got a diagnosis. i take a shot every day now, look and feel 10 years younger, work full time again, and have my life back.

Hoping you're doing better!

Was just wondering if you have had a eeg? I would go to a neurologist who specializes in headaches. I don't think your having any type of seizure, but I have heard of several people from the epilepsy foundation that have that burning smell right before a seizure. there are over 30 types of seizures. You can have a seizure and be aware of everything around you. Not all seizures are drop to the ground seizures (grand mal).

I had epilepsy for over 25 years of my life, five years ago I underwent brain surgery and have been seizure FREE since. But in my past experiences I've had very light seizures where I just fealt this funny feeling in my stomach kinda like a roller coaster feeling and then it would just go away it only lasted seconds. It is still considerd a simple partial seizure, they don't always develop into a full blown seizure.

I'm not saying you have had seizures, just talk to a neurologist about all of your symptoms. I too have migraines 3-4 a week. Right now I'm just dealing with them, the only med I'm taking now is midrine, but it's not helping alot.

Hope you get some answers very soon.

Mercyme :)

Hey, I've had very similar experiences. Went through all the MRI's, bloodwork, everything. No test every showed up anything.

Finally, I landed on two things that have helped.

THE FIRST: 5-HTP. When I took it for the first time, my head DRAINED after two days. Suddenly, my head fuzziness (which had been around for a number of years) went completely away.

THE SECOND: I did the yeast-free diet for Candida. Helped just as much as the above to rid me of fuzzy head.

I'd recommend you check both 5-HTP and investigate symptoms of candida albicans (Dr. Crooks has a great book on it called The Yeast Connection).

GOOD LUCK -- We all know that what you're going through is REAL.

Hi There

I read your post as i have been suffering with a numb sensation in my head for a few days, not sure what it is, but the dr told me yesterday that it was due to tension.  i feel like i need help.  i havent been getting the other feelings your getting with your headaches, and havent taken anything for it either.  I dont know what to take because its not hurting, it just feels strange and numb, and empty.  I dont know what i can do to make it go away.

As for the other symptoms you are getting (i'm no medical expert) but it sounds to me like your suffering from Panick attacks and anxiety which was maybe caused by your accident.  I say this becuase over the last few weeks i've been suffering terribly from Panick attacks and anxiety and your symptoms sound the same.  Nothing in particular caused mine, and medication i was given by my dr's didnt help either.  Mine got to the point where it became generalised anxiety and i didnt even want to leave my house.  I'm slowly getting over it and have returned back to work now, but its a horrible feeling, that people dont understand unless they've been through it themselves.  I would look up the symptoms for anxiety and compare them to yours, if you think you are getting these i can recommend a good book which really helped me - its called 'The Anxiety Release Method' by Joe Barry.  I'm not completely over it and now i have this numb feeling, but its really given me a different way to look at the anxiety and cope with it.

Hope you feel better soon.

All of this started after your accident so it would seem to me that that is obviously the cause. I don't know waht could have happened but people with whiplash get a lot of weird syptoms. The drainage out of your nose does this happen frequently?? Does the headache go away when you lie down?? Also low potassium, while your doctors think it is no big deal, could very well be causing your problems. All of the other stuff the doctors will say is anxiety because your symptoms are all over the place, trust me I know how this feels. I would really focus on the accident when talking to your doctors.

The weird sharp pain in your chest that makes you feel like you are having a heart attack, is in fact a severe attack of GERD (acid reflux). I've had it before. Your heart, and you think its out of wack, See if you have a benign heart murmer. As for the rest, you should have been seen right after the car accident. This sounds severely neurological. Also, for the tight muscles and tissues and ligaments, Medical massage will be the best route.

Please insist they check your spinal fluid levels. You very well could have a leak.

hey i went throught the same problem..the empty numb sensation and pulling in the head twithing kinda..it came to me coz of some tabs i took,..

i feel the doctors will not understand what your going through and theyl say what ur feelig is "wooly" in your head etc. and i suggest u do not take any medication for the same or epilepsy coz they will diagnose with u with something else and it may get more complicated..i suggest u just give it time..it will naturally heal..thats what happened with me..let a few months pass and the numbness will gradually reduce..it might not completely go away..but it will get beaarable and the empty feeling isnt really a problem..

as for the migraines im not much of an expert on it so i cant say anything..the panic attacks are the result of what u are actually feeling..and u dont know what is happening so u get scared,..i undersatand,..i feel if everything is showing fine in the scans just give it some time and let nature do its job..

it is said time, nature and patience are the worlds best physicians.
take care hope u r better and get well soon.
