Hey Jenn,

I am sorry, I don't have a lot of experience with the MS hug.  I have never had it.  Good luck.

Hi, I have had the hug, now I am not diagnosed but they listed me as probable...whatever....I do get the squeezing feeling and it is painful. I have had it around my diaphram and thought I was having a heartattack. I do sort of understand the feeling of indegestion but I just associated it with the hug feeling. It goes away by itself, although sometimes can take awhile. Hang in there and smile...Beannie

before my ms diagnosis, the gastro told me what i now know to be ms hug, was from GERD irritating various nerves running through the area.

Oh yes, I've been hugged by MS. Not in the past year though.

One time ,before being diagnosed w/ MS about 3 years ago I was outside, just picking at gardens and got the hug and it was so bad my husband took me to the ER. We thought I was having a heart attack. I was dizzy, sweaty, sick to my stomach and had bad jaw and chest pain. I was admitted and they did a heart cath, but it was normal. I was told that I was having pectoral muscle spasums and nothing serious. I have had these hugs about 8 times over the years, and I never know now if it is hug or heart. I was told they feel much like a heart attack. Anyway, I also have GERD, but so long as I stay with a low fat diet I do fine, no meds for it.

Hope this helps. MS Hugs are horrible,I would hate to see someone just ignore them though, cause you never can be sure when it could be a heart attack, my MS doc told me that I should always get it checked out if it ever happens again. Better to be safe than sorry!~Kate

OH....AND I always had indigestion w/ my hugs. My Doctor said the intercostal muscles contract when I am being hugged so,perhaps that is why?

whatever i have is not as bad, somehow it coincides with the leg cramps, they tend to be bad at the same time. For about 3 or 4 days i got the bad pain--like someone was squeezing my ribs and really bad heartburn and acid reflex, it came in waves (no i am not pregnant...LOL). I never get heartburn, let alone this bad a case, it was there all day and night, despite not eating anything, and nothing seemed to help, its better now, but i still get a cramp here and there about every day :(

Hi there. Just quick as it's late. I have an MS hug that comes and goes... often feeling it... but never intense or painful. Just feel like I always have something around my stomach. The way I relate it to other people is that it's like I've had a life jacket on, and when you take it off, you still feel like it's there. But nothing painful or indigestion feeling. lol... guess this is not what you asked? :-)

Hey there,

Though I never have had that nasty sounding MS hug I have had intensely painful spasms in the leg & up the spine. I could not sleep, sit, stand or walk without these spasms. Since I got a baclofen pump last year I have no more spasms and no more pain. Its bliss! But it got me thinking. I wondered if any of you who have experienced the MS hug take baclofen? Maybe oral baclofen would prevent it?

Remember if it gets too bad there is always the pump I am sure that thanks to its control of the spasticity I should (hopefully) never experience that nasty hug.
Have had relapsing/remitting MS since 10 yrs old. Secondary/progressive since 1995. Baclofen pump since 2008.
