Hi everyone! Had another MRI and visit w/ Doctor today. I have been doing real well, but having new problems in short term memory. My Dr. now wants me to be tested ( 6-7 hr test) for cognitive issues? My MRI shows another lesion in that area, which he feels may be related to my MS. I had another bad fall this past Sunday. My perception on depth is a bit off recently to. I hate this MS stuff! Need some encouragement. Really though, I am not feeling as bad as I sound. I felt worse this time last year. HOWEVER......

I am wondering if anyone else has had these tests or cognitive issues? What are the tests like. I know, I should have asked him, but forgot..hahaha. No, really, I just did not think about it, just accepted it, but now that I am home, I am curious.

Hope your all doing well, any advise or answers would be awesome! Thanks ahead of time.
Hugs~Katie

Hi Katie,

I have trouble with word recall. But the BEST thing is that it comes & goes. 12 years ago it was really, really bad I reckon that my vocabulary was about that of a 10 year old and getting worse. Then it returned to normal for 10 years, then I started losing it for about 7 months and now it has been good for about 1 year

I do not do tests anymore. Unless the drs have something to offer that will help. Heck I live with MS and feel that I do not need to pay money to have anyone tell me how bad it is. Also because of my training in psychology I believe it is very important to focus on the positive.

Good luck. Hang in there. I am sure its just a passing episode.

Hey Katie,

I am so sorry to hear of your recent fall!!!  Wow that is scary!!  Please take care.  Ok I don't know that much about the tests other than they are called neuro-psychological tests.  They are not meant to be negative.  They are meant to diagnose weaknesses in cognition so that neuro-therapy can be specifically offered.  There is much they can do!!!  There are simple exercises that can help with cognition.  The therapy that can be delivered can cause new neural pathways to be created which can minimize and even elmimate some congitive problems!  It is good stuff.

I am assuming they will do memory testing, concentration junk, processing speed things like that.  It will probably be a series of activities and puzzle like tests.  There will probably also be a lot of symptom checklists.

Go at it with a positive attitude and remember, the goal is to identify weaknesses that can be addressed with therapy.  It is all good!!!  Please keep us posted on this!!!  I want to know more.

Sorry Katie if I seemed negative,

I absolutely agree with Gretchen. It is wonderful if they can give you some exercises that will help and definitely worth it. I too, would be very interested in anything you tell us.

Thanks Popsie and Gretchen for the feedback. I was more curious as to how they test for this than anything. I think some of my memory issues are just age related, I am 51...today in fact! But I have had to read and re-read paragraphs in books to remember things, forget conversation topics that were as recent as an hour ago, things like that. I write everything down. Sometimes words in conversations just escape me. I can't remember how to say something, very weird. I actually was scared I was getting dementia....not even thinking it could be related to MS. It does come and go.

I am getting tested next Tuesday. My Doctor said that he thinks its not a big worry but because I am so worried, is why he is having me tested. The MRI new lesion is very, very small and he is not greatly concerned, so I guess I am probably making more of this than needed.

I will get back with you and let you guys know what happens. Hugs and Love~Kate

Hello Katie,

I took the test in 12/08.  Prepare to be there all day!  If you have ever taken a personality test for a job it will be alot like that.  This part helps them determine depression symptoms and how you are feeling inside.  I made a negative comment during one of the test and they had the comment on the report.  Just FYI!  You sit with an evaluator most the day doing puzzles, word association, sequencing, number and language capabilities.  There is no failing or passing it is truly used as a diagnosing tool for the Dr., request your own copy of the written report for your records plus my Dr. just informed me the test was as he thought and I would never be able to return to work.  I have 24 holes in my brain, dementia, and my IQ is now barely above the normal range.  Yes I pray daily for redirection in my brain.  My memory is horrid.  I am allowed to live alone as long as I am checked on daily and only use the microwave.  I can only drive very short distances and can become lost daily.  I am doing excercises daily to help with cognitive.  I have speach problems, but am working on that also.  I have inertia sitting in a chair even.  You learn to move slowly and have people with you for a financial decision.  I think you will find this useful too!  Rest up - I was exhausted for 3 days afterward!

Prayers and blessings!

B

Yikes B, that sounds really scary. You are so inspirational

The brain is an amazing thing - My husband has no sense of direction - he does not even know which cupboard to find his breakfast bowl in & is totally lost on the roads, but I am the one with holes in the brain and a good sense of direction ??
