Hello everybody,

My wife was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting MS almost three years ago and i'm pleased to say is doing really well, albeit with a cocktail of meds that keep her on the straight and narrow. We are 26 weeks pregnant with our second baby, so the new year will be another journey into unknown waters.
What should be a really exciting time for us has been marred by the swine flu and the lack of specific information about the H1N1 vaccines in Ireland, so here I am.

We understand that we have to be vaccinated but there are so many question marks.
What are the risks to my wife and baby?
Can it excerbate the MS symtoms?

My wifes GP can't administer the vaccine, the one being rolled out in Ireland is Pandemrix, because of insurance issues. If the insurance companies won't insure because of the risk of libel action surely this raise a question mark over the safety of the vaccine.

To finish off my wifes Neurologist has recommended she take the vaccine as soon as it becomes available.
Thanks for reading.

I am in the US so I can't address the your insurance issues.  I can offer my opinion.  If your wife's neuro says get the vaccine then I would do that.  The risk for pregnant women getting this flu seems fairly scary!!  Just make sure you are getting the DEAD vaccine and not the modified live.  I am getting the vaccine as soon as it is offered to me  (huge shortages here...probably there too).

It is my opinion (and I am not an expert nor a doctor) that most of the vaccine negativity has been exagerated.  The risk of having the flu is far worse.  I did get the seasonal flu shot with no problems at all.

Good luck!  Congratulations on the upcoming baby!!!  That is wonderful!

Thanks Gretchen, the vaccine is being rolled out to all high risk groups from the 2nd November so we will be getting it.

Oh I am glad to hear that.  You are in my prayers.  It is such a risk to be pregnant and to get this horrible virus!  Put MS aside for this health concern.  Good luck!  If you don't mind, please keep us posted.  I would love to hear about the baby.  Best of luck and blessings.

I was talking to an infection control dr and she said the h1n1 vaccine is a live virus. I do not want a live virus for many reasons...........

The nasal mist is live.  The vaccine is dead.  I checked with my neuro who said don't do the mist, but to do the vaccine.
