I've been feeling totally punk all week. The pain in my legs and feet is at an all time high. This may sound like a crazy question but if I have allergies or hay fever or a cold will it cause my MS symptoms to worsen? I'm on lyrica and Rebif. I've only been dealing with the MS for a year. On Rebif since January. I don't know if I'm having a relapse. Help? confused

It is quite possible...I might even be daring and say "usual"...that when you have a cold, or flu, or other virus, or even a serious allergy attack,

and otherwise feel ill, that your MS symptoms will worsen temporarily.  This is particularly true if you have a fever because of the cold/flu/etc. -- the increase in body temperature can cause your MS related symptoms to worsen.  Generally once you get over the cold/flu, the MS symptoms will subside again.
...I am not a doctor, nor health professional, and don't pretend to be one, here.....

Hi Madlou,

Well, not sure if it happens for everyone but my husband does have worsening of MS symptoms in the Spring and Fall.  I'm not sure where you live, but here the pollen count has been very high the last week or so.  He does have allergies and sinus issues and a couple of years ago our PCP put him on Flonase and it really does seem to help with the seasonal thing.  As for colds, he gets them rarely, but when he does it does makes things worse temporarily until the cold has run its course.

Not a crazy question at all and I do hope you start to feel better soon.

Hey Madlou

I'm sorry u'r feeling nasty this week. Stinks when u don't feel good. :( Hopefully it'll pass soon for u. I can't really answer u'r question, but what Uppity said about the fever makes perfect sense. I could imagine any sort of stress on the body could bring symptoms on too...and colds/allergies/virus' could definitely be stressful on the body. Take care of u'rself and lt us know how u'r doing.

Hey Madlou,

Remember that allergies are also auto-immune.  When my allergies are acting up, I have a worsening of symptoms.  Kimber's suggestion of flonase or other treatment for allergies is a good one.  Good luck and feel better real soon.

Love and prayers,
