Ok I know MS is supposed to be autoimune. I NEVER get colds and I did not take my avonex last week b/c my two year old had an awful cold and I could not leave her be sick (my shot makes me too sick to deal with a sick 2 year old all night). So now I have a cold. What is the talk about MS and colds? does it cause relapses? How does a cold effect my MS? I am terrified of taking my shot this week and being "shot sick" on top of cold sick.... HELP!!!

Hey Theresa!

Geesh...i'm so sorry about the cold for u and ur' baby. How is she?? My understanding is that a cold can't cause a flare, but possibly the stress on u'r body could lead to one. However, i am not suggesting that the stress of a cold alone is enuf to cause u to flare...only a possible contributing factor. Stress is not a good thing with ms, but not a certainty to cause a flare either. Missing one shot also shouldn't cause u to be weakened towards a flare either. The med is still in u'r body and will not weaken that quickly. Try to relax and get some rest. Take care of u'rself and be well friend. Let us know how u are.

Hey Theresa,

Take good care of yourself.  I do get the occasional cold and so far it has not caused a flare or anything.  Just get as much rest as possible.  I know that is hard with little Maeve.  But do the best you can and get help if you need to. What about mom?  Can she come and help you out?  Take good care and let us know how you are doing.

Love and prayers,

Hi Theresa,

This is an article that I found a while back that is very informative about the topic and might help answer some of your questions.

Maybe you could give your doctor a call explain the circumstances and ask their opinion of what best to do.  I do hope you feel better.  Lots of rest of fluids.

I use Betaseron, not Avonex, but they're both interferons. Yes, MS is an autoimmune disease, but that doesn't really have any bearing on colds, as it is not a matter of you having a lowered autoimmune response, just one that doesn't work properly when it encounters myelin.

If you get a fever with your cold (or flu, or other virus), the raising of your body temperature could cause your MS symptoms to worsen for the duration of the fever. But once you get your fever under control. you should be fine.  And of course a cold will make you feel miserable, but that in itself should not be a reason to not take your shot.

I hope you feel better soon! Lots of fluids, and rest as much as you can.
