After an MRI, my neurologist said I had "9 small lesions in the white matter that would indicate MS".  My only symptom so far has been tingling and numbness on all parts of my face and around the eyes, almost every day since May1/07.  The tingling seems to move around at any given time. I am 52 and don't think I have had any other symptoms.  I have had what I thought was restless leg syndrome for about a year or two, but could this also be a symptom of MS.  He wants me to wait 6 months before seeing him again.   Does this sound like the right thing to do?  Anyone else have face tingling??

I am very upset and scared and don't know where this will all lead.
Thanks for you interest and help.

Was it the facial tingling that brought you to the neuro?  Did you tell him about what you're calling "restless leg syndrome"? Depending on what exactly that is, it could be another indication of something going on with your nervous system.

When the doctor tells you to "wait 6 months before seeing him again" what he really means is this:  "Make an appointment for 6 months from now.  If nothing has changed, I'll see you then.  But if you get new symptoms, or current symptoms worsen significantly, call and report that. I may have you come in sooner!"

So you need to start logging any changes that you experience in symptoms, whether you think they might be related to MS or something else. Note when they occur, see if there is any pattern to their occurrence (like, if you're tired, or overheated, or sick with something else, or...), and call them in.

If it is MS and if your symptoms stay as they have now, it might be that you won't have much more to deal with than the numb and tingling face, meaning your course of MS seems rather slow, a very good thing!  But it will be important that you monitor your situation, as things can change quickly and the doctor will need to know.

And come back with questions and worrys, and we'll try to help!

Hey inlaw,

Welcome to HealingWell.  I am so glad you found us.  Uppitycats has given you some excellent advice.  You may want to seek a second opinion.  My doctor upon diagnosing my MS wanted me to go to another neurologist ( he sent me on to an MS center ) just to confirm the diagnosis.  It is not necessary of course but just a thought.  I wish you the very best of luck and keep us posted as to how you are doing.

Love and prayers,

Hi Inlaw,

Welcome!  It's a pleasure to meet you and I'm glad you decided to post.  Please continue to post as it can be a big help talking to people who are going through what you are, so you don't feel alone in all this.

Your doctor is taking a wait and see approach.  Six months might seem like a long time but if you have any problems before then, new symptoms or worsening of the numbness/tingling or if moves somewhere else make sure you call and report that.  Numbness and tingling are a very common symptom.

Please feel free to browse the forums and articles here on Healingwell.  The National MS Society website is also a very good source of information http://www.nmss.org

Hey Inlaw

Wow...right out of the blue huh? I'm so sorry. I know u'r scared, but try to relax and just take it all in. Everyone has given u such great advice and i can only agree with them. Take note of any new symptoms or changes in the current ones. Let u'r doc know about it all at this early stage. Do some research, but keep in mind that (as i've learned here) nothing beats personal experience. U can read all about the symptoms, but hearing how someone who lives with them describes those symptoms means so much more in how well u understand u'r own symptoms. Please feel free to ask any questions u may have and lean on us all u need. This is a great community and u'll find lots of support and info here. Also, we have live chats on Monday's at 6:00pm (cst) each week. I hope u'll join us!

Thank you all for your advice, guidance and encouraging words. I will definitely start keeping a log of my daily symptoms. I sounds like I need not be too worried and just need to keep on top of things happening to me for the next 6 months. I will be sure to keep in touch on this wonderful forum.
Thank you so much.
