I believe I have found the cause of my MS (mine, not anyone elses).  I wouldn't be typing this unless I was almost positive. Please read......

I am 28 years old. I have had bad symptoms of MS for the past few years and was diagnosed last february. I've been on Copaxone (no noticable changes with that), I've done the solumedrol (only helped to an extent) I'd go more into that, but you've heard it all before.....

MORE IMPORTANTLY....

For the past 11 years I have had this strange odor emiting from the pores of my skin (my chin, the creases of my nose, behind my ears), especially an hour or two after eating fatty foods.  This odor is not limited to this, mind you... it was always there.

It is a putrid smell, kind of like rotting garbage.   People really never noticed it unless they were close enough to me, but I was always aware of it all the time for years and years.

I have always had cystic acne as well. That stinks too, in two ways of course.

Searching NON-STOP on the internet I have never found anyone with the same oily face odor problem.   Only found loads of informations on pets with this problem.

A couple weeks ago I finally found a new post on a messege board of someone with the same strange odor about their face.

A doctor gave a reply to this person that set light bulbs off in my head.  He mentioned that it probably has to do with his liver.

It got me thinking even further.   The liver filters toxins in the body.  It made perfect sense to me.  Obviously smelling like this, my body was not filtering toxins properly.

Thinking even more, I realized I have a plethera of herbal supplements on my shelf, one being Milk Thistle (1000 milligrams).   This has been clinically tested for liver treatment.

This is the most amazing part .......

NOTE: I'm not suggesting to anyone to try this unless they have the same odor problem.....  ALSO IF YOU'RE ALLERGIC TO RAGWEED TALK TO THE DOC.  I have no clue how anyone else will deal with Milk Thistle or whether or not it will help you. TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT

I've been taking about three times the recommended dosage of 1000 milligram Milk Thistle every day for the past couple weeks.

The odor is GONE. I have not breathed through my nose and not smelled it for 11 years.

EVEN MORE AMAZING.... My energy level is off the wall (I feel like a kid again) I can run in place again.  My L'Hermittes sign is GONE, no more "zaps". My fingers can move as good as back in 2001.  My sex drive is back. Some of my numbness and tingling is subsiding.  This is only after two weeks of taking this.

Unfortunately I'm still having trouble emptying my bladder.  I tend to think this is a perminant problem, but I've learned to accept it.  My abdominal hugging spasm obviously still requires baclofen and cyclobenzaprine.  I'm definately going to keep up with my Copaxone treatment too.

I have a strong feeling that since my liver was not filtering toxins correclty, my T cells were trying to fix the problem, in turn, eating my myelin on the spine and brain.

I could be wrong, but if you could just smell the odor I formerly dealt with, you'd at least agree that my liver was not filtering properly.

I am so excited about this and I wanted to share it with you.  I'm not here to spread false hope.  That is not my intention.

For all I know my next MRI will look like hell. I'm not due for my second one for about a year. All I know is symptoms are subsiding much better than they ever have with anything.  Solumedrol has nothing on the relief I'm feeling now.

Please pass your thoughts, I need to talk to people about this.

Dear MSWONTWIN,

Welcome to the forum.  You have an interesting thread started here.  I am glad you are feeling so much better.  You did a good job of tempering your information and keeping it anecdotal.  I do hope you have talked to your doctor about taking this.  You may want to have some blood drawn to check your liver function.  I am a bit concerned that you are taking three times the recomended dosage.  Supplements can be very dangerous at high levels.  I hope you continue to feel good.  Again, welcome to HealingWell.  I love your name.

Love and prayers,

Thanks for the reply.  I have had liver studies done before and they have been off every time, but I was told that they were not in a danger zone.

I think that obviously if the Milk Thistle's main usage is for liver function, and the skin odor has dissapeared... then the odor must have something to do with the liver.

I'm not worried about the amount I'm taking because I don't feel bad at all.  I feel quite the opposite.  It is an herb that some people may be allergic to, but i'm obviously not.

I would be more worried about taking these MS drugs I'm on than anything else.  I was on Rebif for a while and it made me feel so sick all the time that I felt it was a danger to my health.  Not to mention the way these muscle relaxers make me feel.

I figure, if I start feeling sick from taking too much Milk Thistle, then I will be concerned.  Right now I'm feeling so good I could climb a mountain.

You might look into diabetes as well, as the organs start to not work as well they do tend to put out a odor in the body.

Not trying too be rude to you, but it may give you some more input on it, as I do have diabetes and was not saying that you may have it but you may just find some more info on this part was all.

Your not alone MSWONTWIN - I too have had that darn smell for ever.  Mine is mostly behind the ears and on my cheeks.   I also have been to a dermatologist and have had cystic acne.  It is very embarrassing because there are times when someone is close, they can smell it or if I rub my face the odor is predominate.  I will try milk thistle and see how that works.  It just may be that my liver isn't filtering as well.  Best of luck to you with MS!

Hello MSWONTWIN,

I have been searching the internet for a few years now trying to figure out my strange skin odor. your post is the closest thing that I could find that matched my symptoms, although I do not have MS. Every once and a while I feel like a slight heat wave in my body followed by an distinct odor. Smells like you said, decomposing garbage. I have been smelling this for many years, since my childhood. I'm not sure what to do or think. Should I try this milk thistle? Im not sure what Im smelling or if I am just crazy.

I dont have money or insurance for fancy procedures or doctor visits. Im also sceptical of herbs and their effects on my body. I have recently become vegan and very health conscious. I have never felt more healthy in my life but this smell will not go away.

I take milk thistle everyday in the recommended dose. You could try taking it to see what happens. It is not toxic and was recommended to me by my alternative health doctor.

Other things you can do to detox include epsom salt baths, Infrared saunas, activated charcoal pills and dry brushing. Also be sure to keep your bowels moving regular.

I get acne when I need to detox but not the cystic type. I also feel crummy and get underarm body odor, but not face odor. When I use my infrared sauna regularly my underarm odor completely goes away even when I am hot and sweaty!

Good luck to you

First off, I don't have MS. I have the described odor. When I pull up my upper lip close to my nose, I smell it.

It comes and goes, but it's usually there.

One to two hours after eating it is GUARANTEED to be there. When I have a bowel movement, it is GUARANTEED to be gone for a couple hours.

When I rub my scalp and smell my hand, it's there.

Started 3 weeks ago after 10 days of getting off Crestor 10mg. Had been using Crestor for 20 months to treat high cholesterol levels. After stopping Crestor, I did the LFT (Liver Function Test). Found out ALT was 64 IU/L vs the normal reading of 41 IU/L as the lab result indicated.

Have been having slight pain in different areas of my abdomen. Will do another LFT and a kidney function test and see what's going on.

Please guys keep us posted on what it turned out to be. I'll definitely keep you updated when I find out.

Okay I did the LFT. Everything came back normal (better results than last month's) except the ALT which was 61, lower than it was last month (64). Blood sugar was very normal.

While I was reading on the interweb, I found someone brought up an interesting piece of theory. He suggested that antibiotics could cause the smell by killing the "good" bacteria which causes problems in the digestive system which cause the odor.

I guess his theory is a real deal. Right before I noticed the odor, I was taking an antibiotic to treat a gum infection. The prescribed course was 500mg, twice a day for 10 days. On the 6th day, I got a severe diarrhea. 12 hours later I took the pill, another severe diarrhea. I immediately stopped the antibiotic (Amoxicillin, 500mg). Never experienced the diarrhea again. However, the stool hadn't been normal since then although the last 4 bowel movements showed huge improvements, which, to me, indicates that it's getting better as time goes by.

So I'll start from there and see how it goes. I'm determined to find the culprit and find a solution. Some people reported great improvements by making drastic shifts in their diets. Well, that's not enough. I don't want to be a prisoner of a certain diet for the rest of my life.

Will report back.

A lot of metabolic disorders can create specific types of odors.
The attached link is very interesting....

Hope that helps. :)

I cannot believe it! Finally someone with the same strange problem that I have! I was diagnosed with MS 6 years ago, and I have had this strange smell (like funky garbage) that comes and goes for YEARS. I only notice it on my hands, and no matter how much I scrub it doesn't go away. I thought I was going crazy and maybe my sense of smell was getting wacky. I am going to try milk thistle!!

I've seen so many posts regarding milk thistle. I must try it. Here's my story....I am so happy to see other people are experiencing this same "facial" smell. I have had it for years. I'm a female in my 30's now. I used to attribute it to my kitchen work environment (always near cooking food, etc.). I have been out of that atmosphere for over a year now, and IT'S STILL THERE! Boy was I looking forward to getting rid of it, but nope. I have noticed a few people from a few feet away notice a foul smell on certain incidents, and more recently had to throw out a couch due to the fabric picking it up! I'm almost certain it's due to my oils on my face/hands. It wasn't even 7 months old, and we had to throw it away! I did go to a dermatologist and brought it up. He told me there is bacteria on everyone's face, and that I was too paranoild and that people couldn't smell it.......tell that to my couch! After a few months, my husband even noticed the fabric picking up a "fish" odor. I smell that same smell on my pillow cases, couch pillows, comforter, purse, touch phone, etc. I've debated on going to another dermotologist to get a different opinion, but and SO sick of doctors wasting our money. I do wash my face twice a day due to it, and am going to try that milk thistle. I had a liver test done for another med I just started taking, and results were fine. Anyone have a hunch for what I'm dealing with here?

I have been suffering with a bad smell on my face for years. It is on my nose, my chin, and behind my ears. I have seen a dermatologist, but she just gave me some kind of soap to use and told me it may be skin mites. Needless to say, the soap didn't work. This is the first time I have found a post where the people have the exact same symptoms as I do. I have asked other doctors about this, but they just chalked it up to hormone problems. This posting gives me hope that there is something out there that will help. I am going to ask my doctor about the milk thistle and see what he thinks. I am willing to try anything. This has affected my life in alot of negative ways. I am very self-concious about it. I don't get close to people, I have not pursued jobs because of it. I have turned down offers from friends and relatives for social events. I am so afraid people will smell it and not want to be around me. I know some people I've been around can smell it. You can tell by the look on their face or their reactions to you. I just hope if I try the milk thistle, or have my liver checked, that it will help get rid of this. I want to thank you for posting this. Wish me luck. And thank you.

Let me know what your doctor says regarding the milk thistle, or any remedy at that......I've hit so many dead ends due to this issue!

OK, so I think that I've FINALLY figured out what's going on with my smelly, oily face...lol.  I'm typing this reply due to the high number of frustrated people just like me....my original dermatologist kind of blew it off...I went back today to find out he left the practice, and not on good faith.......so, get this, I explained the issue, just as many of us have on this forum.  In fact, I even brought a printed out copy of the form with me so the Dr could see I'm serious about getting this issue fixed.  I don't know what to say about the milk thistle, as I never went out to purchase it due to a possible allergy I have to it.  Anyway, turns out that the nurse put her nose to my freshly washed face, and as embarrassing as it was to discuss, she FINALLY caught it!  She said she smelled a light/mild "musty" smell.  She did a small biopsy of my facial oil, and said her hunch was that it was fungal, and that she's sending it out to the lab.  FINALLY, AN ANSWER?!  They prescribed me two facial lotions and cleansing clothes......MetroCream .75% and Ertaczo cream 2% as well as Plexion Cleansing Clothes that are anti-bacterial.  HOPE THIS INFO  HELPS!!!!

Now I know I'm not alone, which is a good feeling, but yet, still a bad one for us all having this problem. I want to try the Milk Thistle and going to get it from GNC, but can anyone recommend which type to take? So many choices these days. I'm not allergic to anything. Thanks!

But I finnally found something that I have been using for a week now and the odor is gone I cant beleive it. Years with that funcky smell and its gone and the smell was coming from the oils in my skin in my nose, chin, and behind my ears. My cure is 500 mg of glysine one pill before bed time and it helps me sleep better to.

Hi everyone, I have the bad smell too. I used to be able to go on dates with ultra hot chicks all the time, and get laid on the first date all the time. Chicks used to beg me to go home with them.
I had a black book with at least 12 phone #'s of many different girls on a monthly basis.
Now I am nowhere, I have to watch other people go on dates.
This is what I found, it is from yeast infection.
the yeast eats away on your colon walls and it makes it permeable. The yeast at that stage spreads to the rest of your body and gives that smell of fungus.
What helps
Probiotics / Prebiotics.
A supplement called Tanalbit.
Stay away from coffee, sweets, pasta, bread and almost everything that feeds the fungus.
supplements that help build that special barrier on the colon. I don't remember the name but will post it next time.
It usually can get detected if you have white tongue.
The smell gets very strong if you eat burgers, cheese, fried chicken etc.
Get a colonic to clean your colon and take the supplements and dont eat the foods mentioned above.
But this is does not make it go away completely unless you get rid off the yeast.

Good luck

In this site you will find all the info you need on leaky gut syndrome.

http://www.mold-survivor.com/leaky_gut_syndrome.html
My body smell had gotten so bad that as soon as i walked into a store people around me would cover their noses from 5 to 30 feet away.
My hair would smell very bad, my armpits and my face would be covered with stinky oil.
I have since been on leaky gut diet and only my face and breath are very bad. But not as bad as before.
Since then I kind of stopped the diet and the symptoms have reappeared. So I am going back to it.
