hey chili - i remember you from the UC forum. I am glad to hear you have made a decision that will get you off pred. that is really important. I have a surgical consult next month, as it appears Imuran is not working for me, and I am not sure remi is something I want to do. ugh....

you know, when I first got diagnosed with UC, I thought surgery wasn't something that happened much to us, but I feel like there are more and more UC-ers popping up on the ostomy boards.

what was the straw that broke that made you decide to have surgery? where are you having your surgery? how are you feeling after so long on pred?

I will keep you in my thoughts and am delighted that good health is in your near future.

Hi UCinNC,
I am very glad that I have made a firm decision.  I think the "straw" was the "brain damage" that I got from my doctor when I called to get my prednsione filled when I hit "5mg" again and started to flare.  I was emotional anyway and then the nurse was saying how he didn't really want to fill it without seeing me blah, blah, blah.  Like you, I knew remicade was not a choice for me and imuran and 6mp didn't work and asacol was not controling it.  IF I could stay on prednsione forever, I would.   I have lost weight even and have no side effects other than maybe a little puffy face when I am on 20mg but once I hit 10mg (which I am symtom free with), I don't even have a puffy face.  I am 40 yrs old and I think that is destiny that I will loose my colon.  I have tried some homepathic stuff and have done the SCD religiously but nothing gets me off prednsione.  I have really tried to be a perfect patient and still doesn't work.  Also, nausea on 5mg makes me really want to "throw in the towel" because I struggle to eat and all my bm's are water so, at that point, I could cut my own colon out.  I decided, finally, that if I do surgery then I could be on the road to recovery opposed to the constant "road of the day-to-day unknown" with UC.  Every day with UC is unpredictable on low doses of prednsione and no prednsione I know I would be in the hospital vomiting, anemic and dead.  I just want to get better so I am hoping to live with this bag for 9 mths and then have a healthy working j-pouch and be done and off all med's.  I know that this is long-winded, sorry, but I guess it feels good to express how I have come to my decision making process.....it was a big one.

Chili123 -- This is the place to vent, to express your feelings, to ask questions. No need to apologize. Personally, I think you made the right decision. Steroids are not good to be on long term. And there is so much more to living and life than what you are experiencing now. Good Luck to you.

Yay!!! I am hoping that I can keep my "I am totally sick-and-tired of this UC roller-coaster" because it will make this surgery a TOTAL celebration!!! The pain of surgery will merely be just a step forward to the road of recovery.......just have to make a few adjustments in my daily routine dealing with a bag but haven't we all made some major adjustments in our daily routine to deal with what UC throws at us unexpectantly. Thanks to all of you.

i am so glad that you guys are excited about your surgery, that will make it easier after it's over with!
chili-you won't have to make any major adjustments everyday to accomadate your bag, in fact, after a while you will just forget it's there!
And remember, while you are in pain after the surgery, that pain is temporary but the UC pain would have been forever!
UNinNC i never did find out what area of NC you are in!

Chili - what you are saying makes total sense, and I don't think you were venting unnecesarily at all. rather, I just appreciate that you would share the info. I have a surgical consult in about 6 weeks. Not yet sure whether or not surgery is where I will end up, but I am sure that I need a better quality of life than Imuran has been able to give me. like you, I love me some pred, but also like you I know we can't stay on it. so.... I just saw a GI today who said he has one more trick up his sleeve, and then we have to assume imuran has failed me. should know in about a month. I thought I would be really upset, but I am not, rather just glad I have a game plan for the very next step. good luck with these next few weeks prepping mentally for surgery. I am sure you will have a few days when you're scared or whatever, but just remember what you wrote to me, and how strongly you know in your heart that this is the right decision. looking forward to hearing about your new life after your procedure!

Summerstorm - I am in Chapel Hill. sorry I didn't reply when you asked me that - I never even saw the question.... you near the triiangle also?
