hey,

i ran out of adhesive remover! and apparantly, from my last bag change, i really need it. I feel the flange pulling at me when i change my bag and it hurts. I plan on ordering some, but in the meantime, is there something i can use as an alternative? its almost bag change time and i dread taking this thing off

Take a shower before changing, this way you can peel back the tape around the flange with the ease of the water. I've never used adhesive remover and while the first month or two it was sometimes painful taking it off, it gradually went away. The longer I go before changing definitely makes a difference too. If I go 6 days compared to 10-12 days(crazy isn't it?) it's absolutely different.

Taking a shower beforehand will definitely help though. Maybe use a warm wet washcloth to help pull your skin away from the flange. Oh that's another thing. don't pull the flange off of your skin. Always pull the skin away from the flange. I'm not sure WHY it makes a difference, but it does.

I agree with Ash -- don't pull the wafer away from the skin, but rather hold the flange and push in on your belly to remove the wafer. It does make a difference until you can get some adhesive remover.

yeah the shower will help, i always change mine after a shower, and i never use that stuff, unless i have one of my paste episodes, lol. If you pull down, from the top, it won't hurt as much either

I used adhesive removers right in the beginning. Nowadays, I just remove my bag (as others have said, push the skin, don't pull the wafer) then hop in the shower and gently use a finger nail to remove any excess adhesive from around my stoma. Don't worry if you don't get it all off, as long as there's no poop there to irritate your skin, a bit of left over adhesive won't worry it too much :)

PS if it's sticking too well, you might be able to go another day or so before changing :)
I have had an ileostomy for 32 years now due to UC.

Have you tried baby oil? You would have to wash thoroughly after to ensure a good stick but it may help with removal. I've use alcohol but if your skin is sensitive or irritated it won't feel good.

i changed today, and shaz thats the exact problem i'm having now....
just jen i used the alcohol it didnt burn luckily, but it didnt get it all off and it took really long. Not having so much of a problem with the actual wafer as i am with the white tape around the wafer.

but i cant get that goo, that the wafer leaves behind from around my stoma! its irritating me (not physically but mentally) i cant imagine how i can keep leaving goo behind for the months that i continue to have the ostomy.

Shaz, i guess i could try the fingernail thing, but i keep my nails short, and i just graduated to not using gloves when changing bags and handeling my stoma :o/. I'm scared i'll scratch myself or something, and the skin is a little red right around it, it doesnt itch or hurt, but i dont want to irritate it. I considered doing one more day in wear time, but its like the edges of the white tape will lift and stop sticking and i'll be afraid that i'll get a leak.

So u guys are saying that this goo is ok?

Hi.

I sometimes use baby wipes and I find that does the trick. I have to make sure I clean the skin again with water after though,or the fresh bag might not stick to the skin properly.

i haven't tried that, but you would be amazed at what plain old baby wipes can do, for example, they can take tar off a car.

I find my bag and barrier (eacon ring) come off super easy 5+ days in. If I have to change earlier I get more residue. It's MUCH easier to get off when skin is dry even though your first instinct is to try water.
