Hi all,

I am a new ostomate with an ileostomy only 3 weeks old. The ostomy nurses said not to shower without a pouch on since I have had an ileostomy. My problem is once I shower the wafer comes loose and I have to change the whole system. Anyone out there who has had an ostomy for a while who can give me a heads up on what works well for showering?

Hmm...I have never been told that...in fact I was told to "feel free to shower without the bag" (and I've done it too). I would say that if it happens every time that perhaps that you are not using the best products for your body type. Or perhaps you just need to tape the edges of your wafer down. I have not experienced this exact problem so I'm not sure what to suggest. Good luck.

Had my ileostomy done in October 2006.  With practice, I am now comfortable enough to shower every day with my pouch and wafer in place.  I change every 6 days or so.  Preparation is key.  Clean area around stoma with sterile wipes, dry, coat area with skin prep, dry, use stoma adhesive and then apply wafer.  Good luck.

My stoma nurse said that I shouldn't get the wafer wet (showering/swimming) for a couple hours after I put a new one on.  I usually change my two piece system after I shower so it has time on my skin before it gets wet.  Although, I have just started using a new manufacturer and I don't see the same type of problem with the wafer.  You can also cover it while showering so it doesn't get wet.  I think there are some threads where people have used plastic wrap around their middles to keep it dry.

I don't know of any reason why you should shower with a pouch on...many people take it off on change days, take a shower and then reapply a new system.

Good Luck

are you still using the skin prep stuff? that will lessen your wear time, or you could be using a soap that is makign it harder for it to stick. I use dial. Be careful that you dont' use soaps with lotions or fragarences. I have never heard of not being able to take your pouch off in the shower, i leave mine on, because i think it's gross otherwise. You can wrap glad press and seal around you and that does help some.

i take mine off on change days, it feels good to have the water hit it and its the only time i really and truly feel clean
i just make sure i wipe around it with alcohol afterwards to make sure no soap residue is left behind

Kundus,

That is funny that your nurses said NOT to shower with the pouch on, because both of my ostomy nurses said the opposite--they said to feel free to shower with the pouch on because it is made to withstand the water...!

I am also a 3-week old ostomate :-)   and I have showered daily with my bag and had no problems with the wafer coming lose at all....I think you should try a new type of wafer!  I use the wafer that goes with the Coloplast Assura line...I think I lucked out because it seems to work really well for me!  They make specal extended-wear wafers also--maybe one of these would be best for you?

I just want to get some of those bags that are shaped specially for your body (I am not sure how to describe them)--my current bags are just the normal oval shape, but the contoured ones seem like they would fit better under my clothes!

Anyway, call around and get some samples of other systems... I have already gotten a bunch of free samples of things like skin prep, "intimacy bags" (REALLY small ones for those times), etc.

Good luck!!
