Hi,
I am 2 months into my permanent ostomy and experiencing alot of gas. I use Hollister pouches with a gas filter. I have very sticky out-put and like to pour water into the bag to clean it out a couple times a day - problem is that the water on the inside of bag fouls the filter and it stops working. Anybody have any good tips to keep the filter working (other than just not flushing the bag with water... :-) )?
Does anybody else out there pour water into their bags to clean them out?
Does anybody have better luck with a different manufacturers filtered pouch?
thanks,

summerstorm

well my exprince is that the filters never work on my bags anyway, so i dont' worry about them, lol. But i do know that the ET nurse told me to expect that they would not work after about two days, and most of the time not after you had slept.
being only two months out it is common to still have lots of gas, it should calm down. I hardly ever have that much trouble with gas, just watch what you eat and dont' let yourself get hungry!

filters dont work long at all for us. especially if ur output is watery, theyr more designed for colostomy...i wish they would make a lasting one for ileostomies, i've gotten so bold to even burping my bag at my desk :oO , which was ok until i misjudged and had to run to the bathroom....such is life i guess

skooch-I too never had any luck with filters but my new order of Hollister "lock n rolls" came with a note that said the filters were newly formulated and they would withstand showers etc...  Well I was skeptical, but sure enough, they work (and I have loose output)!!  They look different than the others and you don't need stickers.  Mine even works after I sleep (which was my test for them).  I do change my system at 3 days, but have gone 4 without a problem.  My stomach is uneven after this last surgery and with my activity level, I don't want to take too many chances!  Place an order for the new ones and check it out!!  Good Luck:)

Praying- LOL about burping your bag at your desk!!!!!!  I guess we get used to things pretty quickly!  I had to laugh because I have been getting bolder too about where I do this (who the heck wants to always have to find a bathroom to let out a little gas in the pouch..??)

I am sure I will be the same way....In my room, I have a big, private closet for storage--I can already visualize myslef going in there to do a quick burp!  :-)
