This is Mitzi's mom writing the posts again.  She had the surgery on June 7 and was discharged on June 20. It was a painful recovery, with a collapsed lung and some infiltrates.  Loaded with antibiotics.  Yesterday we took her for her one week appointment and she mentioned to the doctor that she had a pain in her left lower chest.  She told us to go to the hospital immediately and get a CT scan to rule out a pulmonary embolism.  She also wanted blood drawn to see if Mitzi was dehydrated again since she's not eating or drinking.

Well the CT showed an abscess (or a string of them)...and the radiologist, under CT control, inserted a drain.  The drainage material is being cultured to find out which antibiotic would be best for it.  Mitzi is in extreme pain again, crying (who could blame her) and just miserable.  If the drain doesn't work, a thoracic surgeon will be called.  Enough is enough already!!!! mad mad

I'm so sorry she is going thru this. My prayers for her lung to heal up and the rest of her body to recover. Please keep us posted and let her know we are thinking of her. ((HUGS))

I live in Atlanta. I'd be glad to come and see Mitzi and encourage her if you'd like. Just let me know what hospital she's at. ((HUGS))

Thank you everyone for your good wishes.  ME thank you for offering to visit Mitzi in the hospital.  She is so depressed and frustrated and in pain that it's even difficult for the family to visit.  Will let you know if things change.

After being re-admitted last Friday (previous admission was for five weeks, for ulcerative colitis and then surgery), she is still being treated for the abscess.  Today's CT scan shows some clearing of the original abscess, but now they see the beginning of something new so tomorrow they are starting yet another antibiotic, after blood tests show she can have it.  The suffering with the pain of ulcerative colitis was bad enough, but now with all the complications, the invasive procedures, and the pain, we just want this to resolve.  She still has a drain and it still is draining disgusting "stuff".  The cause of all this is probably that the colon was so toxic before the surgery that it leaked bacteria into adjacent structures.

What do people without insurance do?  Even with insurance, the co-pays are adding up faster than we can imagine!!! mad

And the saga of Mitzi continues....

On Wednesday her doctor came in to order a CT scan of her chest and found Mitzi vomiting.  She then ordered a CT of the abdomen as well to see what was happening.  The results came back...Mitzi has an obstruction. All food was taken away.  The PICC line was reinserted and the yummy yellow bag of "food"  and disgusting white jar of lipids were started.  Blech...  Monday will be when they will see if the obstruction has cleared or more surgery is needed.  Her doctor is heavily pregnant...I hope she doesn't go into labor by Monday!!!  This is the eighth week of being in the hospital.....

I have been reading about Mitzi's trials, and I am so sorry. As a mother myself, I know how hard it is to see our children suffer. Please remember that there are people here who truly care and pray that Mitzi gets better soon. Keep the faith! Jennie
