5 weeks post op and my incision on my belly is pussing up. should i be concerned it is not bad yet. but it is opening up a little bit and yellow thick puss is coming out. has anyone had this and it was something to get treated for. or does it clear up on its own. i have been putting alcohol on it so far. but not getting any better. it started like 5 days ago i think. and not better yet.... should i be concerned or just keeping doing what i am doing. i go to the dr next week on the 6th of august. should i just wait or call

I'm sorry to hear that. I would definitely call your doctor as soon as you can. My doctor said to call him ASAP if any puss comes up. Your incision isn't healing shut by now?? Best of luck... Good luck and keep us posted. Praying for you.

mommy:

that's not a good sign. make an appointment to your doctor or go to emergency if it's bothering you. Getting pus on a incicion means it is infected. Just to give an info which it might not be your case,I have a friend who also had a surgery and after 6 weeks she can do much stuffs already lifting, exercising , she did really went back to her routines right away in short, she had what's yours today pus on incison site. The cause as she mentioned when she went to her doc was she overdo it and develop a small cyst on the incision site. And another friend of mine was, on her case there was a surgical "gauze" during surgery that was left inside giving an infection that's why there is pus coming out.

Well, you take care. That is not a case that should just go away. There is for sure something going on wrong. My thoughts for you.

nope it is not simple. if there's something left inside, then they will re-open the incision to take it out. And I am not sure with the other friend of mind that develop a cyst, if I remember right , they also re-open it. I don't know.

I had my docotr look at a couple spots on my incision. Mind you, this was my step 2 of three, so it was the second time they cut through the same spot, but i had three separate areas that began to "leak a little". they were very very small, and a small amount of thinner, clearish pus was coming out. It was not a lot, and it wasn't very yellow and thick. After it leaked for about two weeks, I had my doc check it out. My doctor wasn't concerned at all, he told me to put a band aid over it. I did, and it went away.

So, if you've got really yellow yucky stuff, I'd check it out immediately, but if it's really just more like mine was, it may be you just need a band aid. It's always safest to check either way, but i just wanted to give you a story that wasn't too scary!

Let us know what the doc says!

Some discharge is 'normal', but if it's red and sore like you mentioned, then it could be infected. After I had my recent hernia surgery, I had problems with mine opening and having a discharge that was pretty smelly. Had a culture and went on antibiotics and it was fine. Also, soap and water are the best things to keep it clean. Peroxide is a big no-no on open areas; not sure about alcohol.

Mommy Photog,

I would call your doctor about this, because it does sound like it's infected, and I would put hydrogen peroxide on it instead of alcohol. Good luck and keep us posted!

i called the doctor today and the receptionsit just said to keepdoing what i am doing and also to use antibioctiral soap........ so that is what i will keep doing. ( i was using the soap when i showered) but the funny thing is she didnt even ask me anything about it. like how big of a spot or how much stuff or what color is coming out. really strange to tell me it is OK if she doesnt even know. she was so quick on and off the phone, just funny to me. i never even got to tell her more then i have two spots opening up and they are ozzing yellow stuff and that was it. strange but oh well it if gets worse i will call back or i will see them next week also

I know I had a few cases of some "ooze" at the incision site and the only time I had to worry was my last surgery. It seemed it was always in the same spot (just the way my stomach now comes together) but this time I had a hole when they took my staples out (3 wks post op)...not a biggie for me, no antibiotics, just had to pack it for a week or so and it has healed nicely. If you aren't running a fever, it could just be some pus pockets. I would definately keep notes on it if it starts to get worse/you run a fever so you can give your doc accurate info on it.

I think alcohol would be too drying on your healing skin and peroxide can make scaring worse, plain old soap would be best.
