hey all,
I am having my colectomy on Friday and I have a ? about the prep.
When I've prepped for colonoscopy, I usually have had to eat a diet of clear liquids 2 days b4 the procedure and then the DISGUSTING liquid stuff (ahlf-lytely) the day b4. But for this the surgeon/nursed/anybody didn't tell me to eat a clear liquid diet until the day b4 surgery (tomorrow) and then start my prep in the afternoon. Is that what y'all had to do? It just seems weird and I would think they'd want me SUPER clean for surgery.
Thoughts?

Every doctor does things a bit differently. I would follow your surgeon's directions and not worry about it.

I couldn't agree more! Who wants to be on clear liquids longer than they have to? Not me!

For my colostomy reversal surgery, my colon surgeon wanted me on a 2 day bowel prep.

Day 1 - clear liquids only. (two days before my surgery)

Day 2 - clear liquids only, bowel prep regimen. He wanted me to take the magnesium citrate. (day before my surgery)

Nothing by mouth after midnight. Day of surgery - nothing by mouth, of course.

His prep was different than what my Gastro doctor suggests (1 day liquid/prep schedule).
Marsky/Mary's story.....
- Diagnosed with rectal cancer, April 1999 - Stage I, no treatment necessary
(5 hour colon resection: 90% sigmoid removed, 15 inches of colon removed, gall bladder removed, given temporary colostomy)
- Colostomy reversal, June 1999
- Left with IBS/D symptoms, multiple bm's every day
- On a low residue diet at least 75% of the time
- Takes Colace 50 mg each evening

All in all I do okay, I just use the bathroom A LOT! But I survived and beat cancer!

Hi Chassidy,

Every dr. is different; I was on a full liquids 2 days before, then clear liquids the day before w/ my prep-4 ducolax followed by 1 bottle of miralax mixed w/ 64 oz of gatorade.  I also had to take 6000 mg of antibiotics in between. The actual day of my surgery I wasn't allowed anything and my surgery wasn't scheduled until 5pm so I went from Tuesday morning until Thursday evening for my "prep."

I'd do it all over again!  It's the BEST thing I've EVER had done smilewinkgrin ! I've never felt better!

On another note, an ERCP is a pressure test of the ducts of the pancreas; they have to sedate you to do the test and you have a high risk of getting pancreatitis from it.  I know because I've had pancreatitis 3 times and I got it once from that test.  It is the WORST pain ever. sad

My thoughts and prayers are with you all, especially, Tom

Judy
