Hello there
I had a temporary Ileostomy operation done on the 3rd of November (2008) as part of a major surgery with my hysterectomy.
I was informed that it will take me 3 months to heal- so the reversal operation will be approximately February (?).
I would like to know roughly what happens (as standard) as part of the recovery from the reversal.
I have questions such as:
How long does it take to heal internally where they reconnect the stoma
How soon is a person allowed to eat after the operation and what type of food is allowed to begin with
How long does it take for the external healing process to complete (including removal/disolving of staples/stitches)
How long to expect to stay in hospital
What bowel problems to expect to experience after the reversal and how long for
Is there anything else I should know

Many thanks for any information

HI,

I HAD A TEMP. ILEOSTOMY DUE TO CROHN'S DISEASE.  THE SURGEON REMOVED A FOOT OF MY SMALL INTESTINE AND REMOVED MY ILEOCECAL VALVE AS WELL.  I HAD THE SURGERY AUGUST 12TH 2008 AND I WAS REVERSED OCTOBER 23 2008.  SO APPROX. 10 AND A HALF WEEKS I HAD THE ILEOSTOMY.  THIS IS MY SITUATION AND EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT.  I WAS IN SURGERY FOR 2 HOURS AS OPPOSED TO THE 6 AND A HALF THE FIRST TIME WHEN THEY DID THE ILEOSTOMY WHICH WAS GOOD.  I ALSO HAD IT DONE LAPROSCOPICALLY SO THE RECOVERY IS DIFFERENT IF YOU WERE ACTUALLY CUT open.  I HAD MY FIRST BOWEL MOVEMENT THE NEXT NIGHT.  IT WAS LIKE WATER.   I WENT A LOT.  FOR about 5 HOURS STRAIGHT.   IT WAS JUST LIQUID.  THEN THE NEXT DAY IT WAS STILL LIQUID BUT I ONLY WENT about THREE TIMES.  I WAS ON A CLEAR LIQUID DIET UNTIL I HAD A BOWEL MOVEMENT THEN THEY PUT ME ON A LOW RESIDUE AND LOW FIBER DIET.  NO RAW VEGGIES OR FRUIT.  NO NUTS.  NOTHING LEAFY LIKE LETTUCE, SPINACH, ECT.  AFTER 8 WEEKS I WAS TOLD I COULD EAT ANYTHING I WANTED AND TO RESUME A REGULAR DIET BUT YOU NEED TO EXPERIMENT BECAUSE WHAT YOU CAN TOLERATE IT TOTALLY DIFFERENT WITH EVERYONE.  FOR EXAMPLE I STILL CANNOT EAT NUTS, HOT DOGS, CHICKPEAS, PEAS, MUSHROOMS, CHINESE FOOD DEPENDING ON WHAT I GET, AND RUBBERY FISH SUCH AS OCTOPUS, SUID, LOBSTER, CRAB, THINGS OF THAT NATURE.  BUT LIKE I SAID EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT.  WHEN I HAD THE FIRST SURGERY I HAD LITTLE TO NO PAIN THE REVERSAL HOWEVER I WAS IN EXTREME PAIN.  I WAS BEING GIVEN MORPHINE THEN THEY REALIZED I WAS ALLERGIC TO IT SO THEY SWITCHED ME TO DILAUDED.  I WAS IN PAIN FOR about A GOOD MONTH.  ALSO MY SURGEON LEFT MY INSICION open TO HEAL ON ITS OWN AS OPPOSED TO STICHING IT UP AND ENDING UP WITH AN INFECTION.  I WOULD TELL YOUR SURGEON NOT TO CLOSE YOU UP.  THE INFECTION RATE IS LIKE 90% WHEN STICHED.  I DID NOT GET AN INFECTION AND I HEALED IN 6 WEEKS.  THE ONLY THING THAT SUCKS IS THAT YOU HAVE TO PACK THE HOLE WITH GAUZE AND COVER IT WITH GAUZE.   BUT IT BEATS THE HELL OUT OF HAVING AN INFECTION AND POSSIBLY HAVING TO BE CUT AGAIN.  ANYWAY THE HOSPITAL STAY FOR ME WAS ONLY THREE DAYS.  YOU WILL HAVE DISCOMFORT AS FAR AS GAS GOES.  YOU PROBABLY WILL HAVE SEVERE GAS PAIN.  AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A BOWEL MOVEMENT AND YOU'RE NOT THROWING UP THE STAY SHOULD BE PRETTY SHORT.  I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAD ANY INTESTINE REMOVED OR NOT SO I DON'T KNOW IF YOUR SITUATION WILL BE DIFFERENT.  I HOPED I HELPED IN SOME WAY AND IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS I WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM.  GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING.
