My mom had a bowel resection and a colostomy a week ago.  She has a bad odor from the colostomy when she passes gas or sometimes it just smells.  This is not like when she is emptying the bag.  It is not leaking so where is the smell coming from?  The ostomy nurse said they could use a ring to seal the wafer with instead of the paste she has been using.  Any ideas or thoughts?  She is currently using a two piece, but the ostomy nurse also mentioned going to a one piece, although the seal is good with the two piece.

Thanks!

it the tail clean? if something is left there a smell could happen...deodorizer drops work well, too.

is there a filter in the bag? cause sometimes even though you dont see a leak the filters can be bad and you get a smell from there

There is no filter.

Once before the tail wasn't clean - the nurse did not make a cuff before she emptied it.

The ostomy nurse said he could see a small place where the wafer may not have sealed good.  We tried the deo in the bag and the barrier ring instead of the paste and could only smell it once just a little.

Thanks so much for the ideas - we are trying and checking everything with this being a nwe experience for us.

You can put a little bit of mouthwash or hydrogen peroxide as a deodorizer in the pouch.

my visiting nurse suggested a squirt bottle. So I've been squirting in some water after I empty the bag, swishing the best I can and pouring out. Seems to help. I'm using a one piece.

I use a two-piece, the M9 deotorizer (and going to start using the lubricating kind when I'm out and about or not where I can clean my pouch with each empty)...I also use a squirt bottle to rinse my pouch after every empty.  I use the M9 with every empty too.  I have no smell at all, except for when there is a leak and I know I have to change it all right away.

Good luck!!!
