I have been going to the bathroom about 8-10 times a day lately since my surgery but only a little bit each time.  For the past several weeks I have had to push to get anything to come out including gas and now I have very painful, bleeding hemerrhoids.  The last time I saw my surgeon (4 weeks ago) she said that if it was still a problem the next time I saw her that she would schedule a CT scan with rectal contrast to check for a kink and also to see the actual size of the anastamosis.  I didn't have the hemerrhoids at that time so I was fine with that and didn't think it was any big deal.  Now I am in so much pain every time I go to the bathroom and my hemerrhoids bleed every time too.  I called the doctor's office this week to see if she could schedule the CT scan for next week (Tuesday) instead of waiting until I go in there (since she already planned on it and I'm in so much pain) and she said, "no, we'll talk about it Tuesday."  Now she didn't tell me this, but this is what she told the nurse who told me.  I'm sure she has a good reason (and she was out of town for spring break and happened to just call the office and they asked her) but still, I was hoping to get it scheduled in advance instead of waiting till Tuesday.  Now if I wait till Tuesday I won't get the CT scan for another week and I'll be suffering for who knows how long!!

Anyway, I'm sorry I just had to vent.  My butt hurts so bad and I'm using every cream and butt paste they've given me.  I've tried every over the counter hemerrhoid cream and everything the doctor has given me and nothing works.  I have two or three hemerrhoids (two or three too many!!)  Ok, I'm done venting and I'm going to go cry...

hi amanda,
i had surgery 5 weeks and 4 days ago on my nose to fix a breathing problem and i completely understand where you're coming from with the frustration!!!!!!!!!!! my face still feels like its been bashed in but it's getting better, and you will get better too. i know what you mean about just wanting something to get rid of the pain right now but sometimes you just have to wait and it sucks!!!! do taking baths or anything help?? sometimes i find when i feel like im going to go crazy because my head hurts so much i have to get in the shower and stay there for like an hour... just know that its not going to hurt forever, thats what i keep trying to tell myself!

feel better amanda!

IF/WHEN this happens, I would certainly visit the dr's decision last week to have you wait. AND I probably would be pretty adamant about it! You are HIS patient and you ARE recovering from surgery SO why isn't he treating you?? No matter if the latest surgery was or wasn't GI related. The issues you ARE having are GI relavant. Don't get me started.....!!! My dr. and I get along great, but I have had others in my past that just didn't take my Pain seriously... And I did.

Thanks Peggy! She is a wonderful surgeon and I'm wondering if it had something to do with her being on vacation last week...although now my butt is healing due to the blockage and me not going at all right now. What's that saying? Be careful what you wish for!!! Now look at me...I think I'd rather have the sore behind...

Amanda,

I'm so sorry you're having problems. I'm having a "hardly poop" day myself and it's miserable. I know this is sort of gross, but just wondering--when you first had your reversal and started going, was it mostly liquid? I was going mostly liquid about 15 times a day since I got home (3 days ago) but I've been taking colestyramine (a bulking agent) and today I haven't been liquidy at all....it actually looks like brown toothpaste, but even more narrow. (Sorry to be so graphic). Anyway, since I've done that about 3 or 4 times today, I feel so backed up. I don't really get the urge to go like I thought I would; I just go and sit and sometimes something will come out. This is so frustrating. I know I have a rectocele that may still be an issue, but I won't see my surgeon until Thursday to see if that could be the problem. I thought I'd be worried about going anywhere because I'd have to go to the bathroom all the time, but that' just not the case.

Are you taking reglan or anything to get things moving? I'm not sure what to do because this wasn't what I expected!

Amanda...I hope u get some relief soon.. would prune juice help do you think??

Janie...I don't know if this will help u but some days I take metamucil and drink prune juice to get things "right".  The metamucill bulks things up, and the prune juice keeps it from bulking too much.  I adjust it according to whichever way I am (mostly constipated).  More metamucill, less water if I am runnning loose, or less metamucill and more water, if I am constipated...if I am really plugged, then I use the reinforcement of prune juice.  This keeps things moving well for me.

Roddiesgirl,

Thanks so much. I actually brought some prune juice home from my mom's today to try tomorrow if I'm still not going. I just don't get it, I thought after the TC I'd be running to the bathroom all day; I did in the hospital, but it's not happening. I'm so discouraged. It seems like I started the bulking agent (similar to metamucil) I've gotten blocked.

First off, I'm not in your shoes. But I can see how the bulking agent PLUS prune juice might work for your situation. Never really thought of it, but it does make sense. I guess there is that fine line betwee too much bulk and then just keeping it moving thru the intestine/colon. Kind of that fine line for some of us between using various foods to keep our output from being watery to not crossing that line and causing a blockage. Best of luck to you.

Janie, I understand completely! I have that exact same thing sometimes. That's how I realized I have to push to get it to come out. The way you described it is completely accurate. But I do get the urge every now and then, maybe 2-3 times a day. The rest of the time I'm usually in the bathroom and I can feel that I have to go, but it's not quite an urge and that's how I ended up pushing. Even when I have the "urge" though I have to push it to get it out. Very rarely is it liquid anymore, but I take 2-3 teaspoons of benefiber every day and my doctor says I can adjust that dosage however I need to. I really don't take very much, the bottle says to take 2-4 tablespoons. I like it because you can put it in anything that is not carbonated and it doesn't thicken it or anything and it dissolves completely and you can't taste it. If I put it in your drink when you weren't looking you would never know it was there. It helps keep me regular (when I don't have a blockage from eating the wrong foods!)

Thanks for your responses. Today I didn't take the cholestyramine (sort of like benefiber, I guess) and I've been running all day--but it's all liquid again. Tomorrow I think I'll try the fiber, but only 1/2 the amount and see what happens. I hate how I felt yesterday, the butt burn is bad, but being stopped up is so much worse.

Who'd have thought pooping could be so difficult?

i don't think it's the rectocele, Janie. a 1 cm rectocele doesn't cause such an obsruction. i don't know why it's happening to you :o( but i hope you get better soon.

Hodaya,

I'm not sure what to think. In one report my doctor said "large rectocele" and other said 1cm rectocele. I'm going to ask him about it Thursday. So far today I've gone about 15 times, which is really no big deal. So much better than yesterday. Tomorrow I'm going to try 1/2 the fiber--today I didn't take any at all.

I'm sure not smoking as much is so hard on you, but you're so much better off not smoking....just think about your surgery; you really need that lung capacity. This surgery really is a hum-dinger......so try to hang in there.

Hugs to everyone!

i'm sorry i'm such a pain, but what's a hum dinger?

anyway, even if you do have a large and not a 1 cm rectocele, it can be fixed. remember how at first i thought it was impossible to have a rectocele/prolapse repair after the colon is removed (bc of something a surgeon once said), and got all stressed out and stressed you as well.. )o: but then they told me there's no prob to fix it before/after the colectomy, so don't worry, if there's a need to fix it, then it's no prob.

i'm glad you're better than yest. if the fiber don't agree with you, then don't use it. it's supposed to form the stools and slow things down so you don't get a sore bumm but you should do what works for you best.

thanks, i'm not gonna give up and continue to try stop smoking!

hugs to you too!!

Hi Amanda,
I am sorry about you being in pain. I actually have a solution to the butt pain. I use the Destin Equate brand cream. It is very soothing and actually helps the butt not only feel smooth, but the redness and the pain goes away. I use it every time I have to use the bathroom, because of the acids in the BM now that we do not have colons to 'suck" the acid up, the acid "burns the anal and butt area and that is why I experience pain, redness, soreness, and uncomfortable, so that is why I would use it after every BM.
I hope this helps, and I hope you feel better. Good luck with every thing.

Hi Amanda
Perhaps Maya is right. You must use some cream which has menthol. It would give soothing effect. Besides you may try sitz bath. This would help in reducing the inflamation of rectum/anal opening.
Normally whenever I have bad D, doctors recommend sitz bath. You may also try neem boiled in water. Apply this water on the affected part to cure cracks/inflamation.

Hodaya,

"Hum dinger" is just an American slang term meaning something is a big deal.  I'm sorry; I forget you don't know all our terms, and I may use some that others here wouldn't use!  You're so cute to ask!

I'm not sure about the fiber; I've been taking just 1/2, but I still have reallly really liquidy stools about 20 or more times a day.   I may add a little more fiber tonight.  My butt is sore, but I have some good lotion and use it every time I  go.

I'll see the surgeon on Thursday; I'm not sure how to tell how I'm doing.  I've been up and around every day, either going walking or out on errands with my husband.  I feel ok, but constantly have to run to the bathroom (but I DO have control) in every store we go in.  I'm also just exhausted.  I know it's important to get up and move, but I think tomorrow is going to be a stay at home and just rest day!

How are you feeling?>

Ok, so I was WRONG!! I just got back from the doctor and I don't have hemerrhoids, I have a fissure.  I don't know if that's better or worse, all I know is that it hurts!!  She prescribed some cream for me that the pharmacist has to make and I have to pick it up tomorrow. I sure hope it helps because I'm dying here....Also, they set me up for an appointment next Tuesday for some other tests.  Not a CT scan but some other test to put contrast in me and take an x ray to see how big the anastamosis is or if there is any constriction.  Then they want me to try to push out the contrast and then they'll take another x ray and see how much I got out.  I can't remember the names of these tests, but I know I've heard you girls talk about them before, they're nothing new, just new for me.  I sure hope nothing is wrong...I still have symptoms of a partial blockage and that's why she's checking all this.  We'll see what happens...

I haven't been feeling well at all so I have to admit I haven't been keeping up with the posts. I'm SO SORRY!  I hope everyone is doing well though.  I miss you all so much!!
