Hi folks, could use some information please.  I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in September 2008 (day I finished radiation for breast cancer) - started chemo 24/7 and radiation for 5 weeks followed by surgery on January 9th - was given a 50/50 chance of having a permanent colonstomy - but ended up with an ileostomy.  Follow up chemo for 4 months with Oxiplatin (yuck) - then reversal of ileostomy to happen some time in August 2009.  Have been reading some information on ileostomy reversals and they are scaring the bejumpins out of me.

Has anyone else been through this - I have had IBS for 30 years but no other issues such as I have seen on this site - UC, constipaton etc.   Am concerned because it sounds like I will have to go to the bathroom constantly - its bad enough now with the ileostomy bag due to watery output and the side effects of the chemo.  I just want to get back to work - how long after the ileostomy reversal will I be ready?  I was assuming that as soon as the ileostomy hole healed I would be ready?  Is that a reasonable expectation?  What about the effects of the Chemo - it ends on June 12th - how long can i expect to keep feeling the side effects?

Thanks for your help -

I did not have cancer, but did have a temporary ileostomy. I had it reversed on 4/13. I have occasional OMG!! i've got to go urgencies, but usually, I have plenty of warning. I'm still having "loose" stools, but i'm also taking mineral oil once a day. I am still avoiding carbonated drinks, and drinking a lot of water. The one time i did drink something carbonated, about two hours later I had a major blow out, of diarrhea. But I was also, one week post op. I eat pretty much what I want.
