I have a colectomy for chronic constipation and motility disorder, but my doctor has recommended scheduling ileostomy surgery with colorectal surgeon.  Do any of you know what a K pouch is exactly, and am I a candidate?  My surgeon said that I could not have a J pouch.  It's too late for that.

Butterfly.....I believe you are a candiate for a kpouch. I find out May 27 at CC if I am, I too was not a candiidate for a jpouch, but you and i have very similar stories. It is just not performed anywherere around here.....there are good surgeons in CA, Cleveland, and FL. I had no choice but to get the loop ileostomy first becuase if my obstruction, but i was planning on just going for the k pouch. It is also very common to covert a loop ileostomy to a kpouch. They are not as commmon becuase most with UC and Chrons are candiadates for j pouches.....it does have some complications associated, but they have greatly improved over time. Do you have all of you sm intestine. I think you need to call me.....Lizzie

Lizzie, I have all of my small intestine, I'm just very badly constipated once again. I feel like I did before my colectomy, and am disheartened by all of this. I don't know how it's supposed to work on this message board for giving out telephone numbers and or e-mail addresses, but my home e-mail is lasbutterfly@embarqmail.com and my cell number is (850)933-6427.

Yes, it seems like our stories are so much alike and I really feel what you're going through. I can't imagine how tough it is for you right now, but I know that I am very frightened, too, and have lots of problems with anxiety and depression already without an ileostomy, so it is going to be a very difficult but necessary hurdle for me to overcome, too. Like you, I do have a wonderful and supportive husband and we need to thank our lucky stars for that!

I pray that you are able to properly recover before having to go back to work. Others don't understand, until they've been in our shoes, but these are really tough surgeries. I wasn't ready to go back to work after my colectomy and was still often incontinent at times. One of the questions that I'm going to ask my surgeon is how long he'll give me off work to properly heal before returning. You're in a tough spot, because you're a nurse and have alot of responsibilities. I sit behind a computer at a desk all day long, so it'll be some easier.

Do you have any info about a K pouch and why you'd prefer it to a permanent ileostomy? At this point, I just don't want to be constipated ever again, and I want to get on with my life as a healthy person and not always worried about my bowel movements.
